Sound Off: How Many Resources?

My humble library only has 881. I imagine there has got to be people who have many, many more...! Who can top this and is king of the hill?

My bibliography shows 2,271 but there are many (all possible) pbb files in that number. That is why I started the Library arrangement forum.

With my house full of books left, right & centre it seems best( far,far cheaper) to go for the digital option than buying a mansion to contain more books which i cannot afford. My long suffering wife would like some of her house space back, i gave all my reference books away (dictionaries, lexicon but not commentaries, well a few commentaries) to my wife's horror it seemed like nothing had left the house. Boxes upon boxes of books given away and no space to prove that, that was the case.

What a shame i only found out about Logos in December 2006, i should say Jan 2007 & I find that some resources like Barclays , etc. are no longer available. In context 8,054 resources is a lot however i still have some catching up before Logos loose the license to some product.

So one can understand why i took great interest in the transfer of license issue which has now been addressed fairly by Bob.

Afford is the key question... the only way I could spend more than I already do is to sell a vital organ or something.

4282 right now, at a cost of $15,621. And that price was mostly taking advantage of box deals, specials, pre-pubs, and the Community Pricing offers. Owning 8k unlocked resources would cost, then, probably over $30k. Too rich for my blood! [:)]

I have 6,973 Libronix titles unlocked and 605 PBB's for a total of 7,578 books. I have deleted PBB's that have come out in Libronix format and also various older versions of BHS and NA26 that Logos has produced through the years.

I have roughly 2,700 books that includes 990 PBB books, 350 journals, numerous targums and ancient Greek manuscripts and 30-40 Logos manuals. I spent just under $2,600. I have not bought any of the more expensive commentaries, but have Scholar Gold package. I purchased those primarily to get the commentary sets included. I added a number of books from Nelson packages. I have added them to collections and have found them useful. My most expensive commentary set was Lenski. I wanted to buy it since my Bible college days. I make moderate purchases from pre-pubs and community pricing.

In the last 18 years, I have spendt $2,800 on paper books and hundreds of dollars in shipping. That probably represents 300-400 books and they are not nearly as useful as Logos.

I am sure there are people who have smaller libraries in numbers, but a higher quality and more costly library.

All the Logos manuals get included in the resource list.

2,911 (includes over 850 PBB's, and a few help files). So just over 2000 Libronix resources. (Many of the PBB's are duplicated by Libronix resources that came out later. I've got to go through those and clean them out.)

Well, it's bragging if it's a pride thing. I started this topic because I was curious about how extensive some of the libraries that Logos users had. The vision of Logos is to have many more available resources, so without a doubt people's electronic libraries are going to grow. If this occurs, then what needs to change in the software to adequately manage it? These sorts of numbers of books on a personal computer were unheard of 10 years ago.

Personally, I would love to have many more resources than I currently do simply for research purposes. I doubt I will ever afford it, but that is another matter!

Wayne Grudem systematic theology comes the closest in representing my views, although on the eternal generation of the Son Grudem leaves me saying hmmmm.

I have a different though related question. How many of us actually beleives they will find a use for any more than 25% of our bloated libraries? Does anyone think that there might be a hoarding mantality when it comes to digital resources and that seeing the number increase can add to one's ego a bit?.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have a couple thousand resources and use a LOT of them for different things.

I use most of my commentaries for preaching/teaching preparation.

I use most all of the Journals for my Doctoral research (and frequently in my teaching preparation).

I use many of the more populist books and bible study resources to help answer questions I get from people in my church and other pastors who are looking for quotes or resources.

But, I think your comment misses the point of why an extensive library is valuable. The question is not how many resources one uses, it is how well we are able to use the resources we need. I can search hundreds of journals spanning 5 decades for a key phrase or passage and find the best 4 or 5 articles that address the issue at hand. I can do this in just minutes, whereas with paper journals, it would take days of searching. Having a larger library, makes searching and finding quality hits far more likely; and this is the value and purpose for a large library.. not reading every page of every book.

Anyway, that is just my opinion, but I hope it does offer a different perspective that you may not have previously considered in your remarks.

I can't speak for others, i do agree with you being able to search one's library for the best material available is a God sent. Maybe a paper library might have that effect as others walking into one's library may be impressed at one's collections on display. It's not the same with a digital library unless one wants to really show off. Most friends do not know i have a large digital library and until recently i was not aware of that either but with a paper library it is there for all to see.

Yes exactly. I find this helpful in understanding how large libraries are getting. My library is 10% of the largest one reported here, but I have already found it extremely helpful, particularly in regard to my research and studies. It is totally a bonus that it can travel with me as well. With time, I anticipate my library growing, though I don't know that I will ever have 10K. We will see.

For me, large libraries equates to Libronix v4 and improved library management! v3 is incapable of managing anything above a few hundred resources!
