Why is so challenging to find all the courses one owns in one spot within Logos?

Hi

Its me. I am back again.  I am surprised at how challenging it is to find already owned courseware within Logos 9  Way too many steps to get them all in one place.  Surely this should be a feature right off the main menu, right?  Wrong!

Comments?  Suggestions (other than Joshua go back under your bridge please).

Have you tried looking in the Courses Tool in the Available section?

Hi Sir..thanks.

I took a look at that and tried using it but gave up when the window kept closing and there seemed to be no effective way of backing up.  I have over a dozen courses I never knew I owned or bought previously (or maybe was graciously gifted by Logos through the years) but I am exasperated that Logos never thought to make it easy to see them all at once or even locate the ones you just bought.

No doubt my critics will pop in and show me multiple steps to get there but i continue to believe this is basic to a good user interface.  Make it easy to get to something you just bought and show groups of things like courses you may have access to all at once.

I am mystified that developers at Logos miss this repeatedly day to day, month to month, software iteration to the next...simplify and organize should be their motto.

Sign me up for THAT beta testing program please....I wont even need a reward (thanks Faithlife).

Open your library and search for "course" is how I found one that I watched today for the first time.

The new Factbook has taken this as it motto abd has made giant steps towards it in its implementation.

To open the courses Tool:

1. Go tool menu and type courses in the search box to find the tool and click on it to open

or

2.  In the command (go) box type in show courses and when the command shows

 a. click on it to open the courses tool

 or

b. drag the command onto your shortcut bar to have one click access to your courses always

3. Alternatively open your library window and in the facets filtering panel on the left hand side and under type choose courseware textbook to view all of your courses. Note this will include non-Mobile Ed courses that may not show in courses tool so if you want to refine further choose Logos mobile ed under series facet. If you want to go a step further from within your library select all the courses and in the information panel on the right hand side, under where all your tags are listed, choose Save as a Collection.

(In reply to David Thomas)

....and filter by recent as a dropdown.

Well done Sir.  Seems simple but still believe courseware should be grouped under main menu (which I suggest is woefully underdeveloped in every iteration of Logos.)

One should not have to be a programmer to use Logos to do anything major - like find what you just bought or see something imho as major as courseware grouped all on one page.

No real thought is given to this sort of basic user functionality....been saying it for years.  Maybe it will happen before Jesus comes back but I am doubtful.  More complex and useless functionality is added year after year.  Factbook updates is the only thing I personally know in 9 imho is worth upgrading for.

I want to open up a major update to Logos someday and gasp as the major changes made to iy make it all simpler and easier to use.

They bought up Wordsearch which I loved (their books were far cheaper) and yet absolutely no one on the Logos team seems committed to stepping back and saying "How can we make it all easier?"

Disciple2 and others sure to follow...thanks...you are wise and gracious.

This thread has pointed out several different approaches to seeing owned courses:

  • Using the library sidebar to filter by Courseware Textbook type
    • (You can also accomplish something similar by typing type:courseware or type:"courseware textbook" into the find box)
  • Using the library find box to search for courses
  • Using the Courses tool to see all the courses

I see it as a strength of Logos that users are not constrained to approaching something only one way.

What about sitting down, figuring out everything that you believe should be grouped on the main menu, and then creating a thread showing a sketch or diagram of your proposed main menu?

My concern whenever I see your general suggestion to put things on the main menu, is that it may get cluttered with lots of unrelated things. I'd like to see how your concept would address that issue, please.

If you look on the right side of the Courses toolbar, there is a "<" button which lets you return back to the previous contents.

Simplest way (IMHO): In the Library, typing the filter type:course will find all of them. Just typing "course" which someone else suggested above will find a whole lot of other stuff, anything with the word "course" mentioned in the title, series, subject, or description. But if you filter by only those resources whose type has "course" in it, you'll find all the "Courseware Media Collection" type resources as well as all the "Courseware Textbook" type resources.

My opinion agrees with your opinion (albeit your string is shorter)! Wink

I considered mentioning that, but thought it might be too obscure for a thread asking how to make things more obvious Smile

Can I make up for it by noting that simply typing "Mobile Ed" into the Library pane brings up all but one of my English Mobile Ed courses, and I would prefer that it would bring up all of them? (I'm guessing Josh will agree.)

The reason for the missing one, incidentally, is that LT261 is part of the "Learn with Logos" series, rather than the "Logos Mobile Education" series. Since LT261 is about learning Logos, that does make sense.

Thanks Rosie for this refinement. I guess it all depends upon how extensive one's library may be. using TYPE: narrowed my hits from 220 to 80. Using the facet Type:Courseware Textbook refined it further to 42. Adding PUBLISHER:Lexham facet took out the Moody and Desiring God courses, narrowing to the 31 Mobile Ed that I own.

The Faceted searching is truly a time-saver to eliminate clutter and make more refined searches.
