At what point will we be able to be certain that if a particular fix from that list hasn't been made in the Factbook as we see it, it has been missed/omitted/disagreed with? For example, if they still haven't been fixed, when will I know that Faithlife isn't going to fix 2. or 106.?

We've been making some changes in our practices to enable speedier resolution of these merges (and your continued input has been very helpful). While we haven't yet addressed all the issues, we've addressed quite a few, and as far as I know we haven't yet rejected any merges for duplicate people. I'm optimistic that in a month or so all the reported changes will have been addressed and shipped (but that's not a commitment).

Excellent news, thank you. Don't worry; I won't treat your optimism as a commitment.

425. Saint Angela Merici - https://ref.ly/logos4/Factbook?ref=bio.AngelaMerici was neither a "Denominational Founder" nor a "Man". She should be listed as a "Religious Group Founder" and a "Woman".

Thanks for the continued helpful feedback.

We often lean on Wikipedia for naming conventions. Making "Kyiv" the primary spelling makes sense to me.

On the other hand, i'd never heard of "Czechia" before. A Google search for "Czech Republic" returns about 4.4B hits, while "Czechia" returns only 33M (so 1%). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_of_the_Czech_Republic suggests "Czech Republic" is still the official formal name, so I'm not sure about changing it, but we'll look into it.

Quote from that Wikipedia page:

Multinational technology companies that adopted the name Czechia include Google,[48] Apple,[49] and Microsoft with Bing Maps.[50] The business network LinkedIn updated its locations to Czechia in October 2020.[51] Microsoft updated its Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central to Czechia in January 2021.[52]

Now that is actually more questionable than "Czechia". It's a change of name entirely triggered by recent events. The city was known as "Kiev" to English speakers for centuries... now it's re-named to "Kyiv", which sounds more "Ukrainian". Would that mean we'd have to rename "Rome" to "Roma", which sounds more Italian, "Munich" to "München", which sounds more German, "Dublin" to "Duibhlinn" so not to use the name given by the British invaders, "New Zealand" to "Aotearoa" so not to use the name given by the British invaders? Or do we want to keep the names of locations that English speakers actually know it by?

While we have to find a reasonable compromise between common usage and standards, we don't have to choose a single "right" name as long as we cover the most common ones: so we can include both "Kiev" and "Kyiv", just as we include Peking as an alternate even though our preferred name is Beijing. In general we try to follow existing standards, though i was unaware of "Czechia" before (apparently it became official only 6 years ago).

According to the government of Ukraine, their capital city's name in English is "Kyiv".

According to the government of the country in question, their country's name in English is "Czechia".

That reasoning should be quite sufficient in both cases to make the suggested changes.

The reasoning behind the current renaming of "Kiev" to "Kyiv" in many places is clearly not that of following the official Ukrainian government suggestion. This is happening now because of the Russian invasion, as a statement of solidarity. Otherwise it would have happened with the Ukrainian independence in 1991.

Statements of solidarity are important, but I don't really think that this one is a particularly clever one. The city has been known as "Kiev" since 1804, long before the Soviet Union even existed, and "Kyiv" came into practice only in 2018.

KyivNotKiev - Wikipedia

I don't think it's a coincidence that this happened shortly after the annexion of Crimea...

Now a serious question. Let's assume Putin will manage to install a pro-Russian government, which will then advocate to spell the city "Kiev" again. Will you use the same argument again to change the name back to "Kiev" in fact book?

Not a duplicate entry, but quite the opposite.

That is irrelevant. Also, it is not a "suggestion".

Jan Krohn:

"Kyiv" came into practice only in 2018.

KyivNotKiev - Wikipedia

According to the Wikipedia article you linked to, "Kyiv" was legally mandated as the English transliteration in 1995, not 2018.

Since the Ukrainian government is in no position to legally mandate anything to any company without a businesss location in the country, its a suggestion, and not a legal mandate.

From 1995 to 2018, literally no-one cared.

Since you've not answered my last question, I suspect your motivation is not only about the alleged "legal mandate" either.

No, literally, people did care. I think it's fair to say that more people care now.

I don't recall having noticed it. Sorry.

If at some point in the future the internationally recognized legal government of Ukraine, whatever sort of government that might be, changes the official English name of the city now called "Kyiv" to "Kiev" or something else entirely, then of course I would support renaming the Factbook article to whatever that name were to be.

I have already articulated my reasoning as to why the article should be renamed "Kyiv" from "Kiev" multiple times; I am done repeating myself on that point in this thread.

274. With the addition of the Catholic Encyclopedia to the Factbook, many new duplicate articles for popes have been created. They can be easily found by searching "pope from" (e.g., Pope Saint Zachary - merge https://ref.ly/logos4/Factbook?ref=bk.%25SaintZacharias_Person & https://ref.ly/logos4/Factbook?ref=bk.%25PopeZachary_Person )

I've lately noticed that this more detailed entry has not been fully addressed. For example, to fix Pope Leo XIII, merge https://ref.ly/logos4/Factbook?ref=bio.PopeLeoXIII & https://ref.ly/logos4/Factbook?ref=bk.%25LeoXIII_Person

The "pope from" articles that I have checked today all use the ODCC.

Thanks for the feedback. We've recognized some duplicates and inconsistencies in how the various Popes are named, and we have a case to fix this.

429. Kallistos Ware is not the Ecumenical Patriarch ... he is UNDER the Ecumenical Patriarch i.e. he is part of the mainstream Eastern Orthodox Church. The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople is Bartholomew I.. Kallistos Ware is the Metroplotian of Diokleia in Phrygia (titular)

I see that the Metropolitan Kallistos (https://ref.ly/logos4/Factbook?ref=bio.kallistosware_1) is currently listed as belonging to the "Ecumenical Patriarchate" (https://ref.ly/logos4/Factbook?ref=bk.%25EcumenicalPatriarchate_Denom). Qua "religious group", that article is a duplicate of https://ref.ly/logos4/Factbook?ref=bk.%25GreekOrthodox_Belief

431. Create article "The Children of Mary of the Sacred Heart" and apply the current Featured Article from the Catholic Encyclopedia of https://ref.ly/logos4/Factbook?ref=bk.%25SacredHeartofMary to it, since the Catholic Encyclopedia article is about a group of people and the Factbook article is not.

432. Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary - merge  https://ref.ly/logos4/Factbook?ref=bk.%25DevotionImmaculateHeartMary & https://ref.ly/logos4/Factbook?ref=bk.%25SacredHeartofMary and add "Immaculate Heart of Mary" as an "Also:" option, since that is the term that most people searching for this material will actually use. (Or simply change the article's name to "Immaculate Heart of Mary".)
