I’m running Logos 9.0.0.0181 on macOS Big Sur 11.0.1. Every time I open a sentence diagramming document ("RK Galatians 4:8-5:1 by Terry Cook”), Logos crashes as I scroll down the page of the document. The scrolling goes well for a page or two, then the beach ball appears, then ... POUF! ... no more Logos.

I sent an error report go to Apple the first time this happened. I started to copy the error report and paste it in here, but it seems to go on forever.  I tried one of the other sentence diagramming documents from Terry Cook and had the same experience. Anyway, this is a tool I’d like to use very much. Any ideas how to avoid this crashing? Thanks.

Hi Chas

I don't have access to that document so can't try and reproduce what you are describing.

Instead of pasting in the error report, please enable Logos diagnostic logging and upload the logos.log file (using the paperclip icon in the forum editor) after a crash

Details of setting this up are at https://support.logos.com/hc/en-us/articles/360027869132-How-to-Enable-and-Submit-Log-Files

Here's the diagnostic log requested by Graham. This is the second run, which should include Logos.log (Thank you, Graham.)

Note: I've edited out my user identification from within these files. Otherwise I left the files unchanged.

Just a datapoint:

The sentence diagram mentioned above is part of those that are shared via FL group "Logos Sentence Diagrams". From the Docs menu section "Groups" I transferred the document into my Logos installation.

Running Logos in stable version 9.0 SR-2 and Verbum in 9.1 Beta 4 on Windows 10 I can access the document and scroll through the end (15 pages!) without any issues.

Running Logos 9 latest (beta) version on Win 10

Graham,

If you've downloaded a copy of that log file, I'm thinking I'll remove it from the forum. It's got a bit more identification information than I'm comfortable having on a public site.

Thanks.

I haven't seen the log file but if you aren't comfortable with posting here, I think the only option I can suggest is contacting Customer Services and explain what is going on - their contact details are at https://www.logos.com/contact

Hi, Graham,

I'll try editing out some identifying info and then repost the logs.

Thanks.

O.K., I've edited out identifying information from the log files. Otherwise I left them unchanged. The link is in the third post in this thread.

Thanks!

Hi Chas

There was no logos.log file present in the zip file. Did it not get produced?

If not, please check diagnostic logging is enabled as per the link I posted above

Hmm. Not quite sure what happened there unless I inadvertently left out Logos.log when I zipped up the files after editing.

Now to that same post (#3 above) I've uploaded newly created log files, newly edited to remove user identifiers, and newly zipped.

I'm very sorry for the extra trouble.

Hi Chas,

I'm sorry Logos is crashing when opening the document. The logs were not instructive on why Logos is crashing. I also don't have access to it and the author hasn't made it publicly available to test with. Can you verify you could potentially re-download the documents, and if you can try deleting one of them and re-download it to see what happens?

Delete:

1. Open Docs menu.

2. Right-click the document to delete.

3. Click Delete.

Re-download:

1. Click the Groups tab in The Docs menu.

2. Find the document.

3. Right-click the document.

4. Select "Add to your docs".

Not a great solution, but if this does not work you could open the document on one side of Logos, open a blank Sentence Diagram on the other, and build what you see in the new blank document and see if the behavior continues. You can click inside the document and press CMD+A to select the entire thing, CMD+C to copy it, and then select the same space in a blank document and press CMD+V to paste it there. Then see if the crash continues with your own version of the document.

This obviously won't get at the heart of the problem, but it could be a faster way to get you where you want to be.

If it is still crashing we will likely need access to the document(s) to test with.

Thank you for looking at my problem, Thomas. I followed your suggestions, first deleting and then re-adding the diagram document, then recreating a new copy of the document by cutting and pasting from the original. Unfortunately, the problem persists. As I scroll through the document, Logos consistently crashes.

What else can be done? Is it really not possible for you to access these same diagram documents so you can test more thoroughly?

FWIW, I also opened some of the docs in this same set which don't have oodles of scaffolding  but instead use a few simple arrows to show the relationships between sections of the text. Those didn't crash, but they are also much shorter documents which can be scrolled to the end with just a few turns of the mouse wheel.

I'd really appreciate getting this fixed, as I'm wanting to study these diagrams in some detail over the next few weeks for a research project.

Thank you!

Hi Thomas

As NB.Mick pointed out above, these diagrams have been shared in the Faithlife Group Logos Sentence Diagrams

So if you become a member of that group, you should get access to the diagram (I've just successfully accessed it)

It doesn't crash for me on Windows - unless anyone else has confirmed it on Mac I'll try later when I get home.

Just now I was able to test this same diagramming document ("RK Galatians 4:8-5:1") under Logos 8.11.0.0017 running on macOS Catalina 10.15.7. I haven't experienced any Logos crashes yet. FWIW, scrolling is also much smoother on Logos 8 running on macOS Catalina.

I'd like to upgrade Logos on this older machine to see how things work under Logos 9 on macOS Catalina, but before I do so, I'd like to know if I'll be able to revert to Logos 8 if the diagram documents crash on Logos 9. I say this because I'd really like to be able to access these documents in the coming weeks.

QUESTION: Is it possible to revert to Logos 8 after upgrading to Logos 9?

Thank you, all.

It is possbile - but involves some work.

Deleting the app isn't enough - you need to delete all the associated files and download them agaain (some will have been updated to only work in a Logos 9 environment)

I'm not familiar enough with the MAC platform to give you the precise details - hopefully someone will be able to do so.

Thank you, Graham. I think I'd best keep Logos 8 on this older Mac, applying the IIABDFI principle. Perhaps someone else has Logos 9 running on macOS Catalina and can see if the diagrams work properly. Meanwhile, I've at least got a way to use them.

I've just tried accessing the diagram in Logos 9 on macOS 11.0.1.

I can successfully scroll all the way down and back up again.

Though it is much less smooth than on my Windows machine with screen refresh taking a few seconds when scrolling down.

So there isn't a totally general problem with it not working on Big Sur - which I know doesn't help you at all!

Hmm. I'm glad it worked pretty well for you, but now I guess I need to figure out what the problem is on my end. The crash happens every single time in my case. There may be something glitchy in my machine's video driver or I suppose my mouse driver, though I'm not sure that would be in play. The fact the I'm getting crashes on pages that have a lot of lines, angles, arrows and other non-text items makes me wonder about things like screen repainting (?) or some other aspect of graphical displays about which I know absolutely nothing. Unlike Windows machines, Macs don't offer a lot of options when it comes to reverting to older drivers or trying beta versions of new drivers, so I may just have to use my older machine for working with sentence diagrams.

I'm interested to hear that the scrolling is much smoother on Windows. That makes me want to revive an ancient Windows laptop and see if I should use that for working with sentence diagrams.

Thanks for taking the time to test and to advise.
