Hi!

I’m trying to find in Logos a chart of kings and prophets so that I can see who was reigning at a certain time period and who was prophesying at that time in the OT.  Does that exist in Logos? I’m betting it does.

Also, what is a typical way to search for something like that when I have an idea like this that I would like to find.

Thanks!

Darol

Hi Darol - and welcome to the forums

Darol Timberlake:

I would do a Media search for prophet king (which finds media relating to both prophets and kings) and restrict the search to Charts and Timelines

The results you get will vary depending on what resources you have in your library

Graham it looks like you got a lot of hits on your Media search. I'm running Verbum 9.1 Platinum. I have 3,789 resources and yet I had zero hits.

I'm guessing you must have a number of books with charts and timelines that I don't have.  Could you tell from which books some of these hits are coming from.  I'd be interested in adding those to my collection.  Thanks!

Not Graham here, but I found that turning on "match all word forms" more than tripled the number of resources where results are coming from. One of those are the Infographics of the FSB, which should be in everybody's library from Basic up, so you may want to check this setting in your search.

Thanks for the suggestion. I turned on "match all word forms".  That generated 5 results, 4 from the FSB Infographics and one from "Little Rock Catholic Study Bible.  Looks like Graham had lots more hits.  He may have some suggestions for additional resources that would be worth having. Thanks for your help!

I've just looked through my search results and the related resources - the two additional ones that provide the most insight for this particular question are:

Hi Darol - if you don't have resources that give you this information, you could also use the "Timeline" tool. Go to Tools > Timeline and select the time period 800-400 BC, and then using the "Subject" and "Type" filters you can eliminate all but the main things you need. I'm afraid I don't have access to my laptop at the moment to do a screenshot, but it is a really useful tool. What shows will, again, depend on what resources you have.

That's a great idea GregW

You get something like this - depending on exactly how you set your filters

I just did a quick timeline, and I've shown the image below. Slightly disappointed that it shows the prophetic careers of Jonah(!?!) but not Isaiah or Jeremiah, and the reigns of kings seem to be a bit hit-and-miss as well (in terms of completeness, I don't want to get into a debate about chronology). I think the Timeline gets its data from the Timeline Dataset, so you are at the mercy of whoever compiled the data and the view they take of some of the chronology. If you want to have a play with it I suggest you select "Biblical Events" on the "Subject" dropdown and uncheck "Archaeology" and "Arts and culture" on the "Type" dropdown.

Strange, I do get entries for Isaiah and Jeremiah as below:

Very strange - it's not something I've used a lot - I'll maybe have a closer look between Christmas and New Year, when I get a bit more time.

Actually, if I enable "Biblical Studies" as well as "Biblical Events" in the Subject dropdown I do get entries for Isaiah and Jeremiah. That was me not quite understanding the way it worked. There is a set of Timeline Dataset documentation in the library which also tells you which resources were used in compiling the Timeline dataset., which is very helpful.

The one I have used is from The Bible Knowledge Commentary, Vol 1, Page 512

logosres:bkc;ref=Bible.1Ki12.22-24;off=480

It is not flashy but easy to read and make comparisons.

I have the BKC but that chart/timeline did not show up. That nice graph in BKC shows up if I include "table" in the Media search. Thanks Joe.

I don't mean this as a negative... But I find in Logos what I call "information overload" in that there is so much information that finding it can be a problem... Logos does make it easy... if one can remember how to look it up.

For example.... sometime back I taught on the "Minor Prophets" and built from scratch some of the charts that is in the search that Graham showed... wish I had known ....  because I spent many hours on my charts in Powerpoint. Whereas I could have done the "right search" and had a chart and saved myself hours of research.

Now, I have a problem remembering how to get to what I want to look up... whew!

Thanks Graham!
