Batman:

I have HAD IT!
I am just about done with Logos forever!
SIXTY THREE ADS in my Logos software is FAR TOO MANY!
I have turned it off and you KEEP adding them back.
THIS IS BEYOND RIDICULOUS!  You ought to be ashamed of yourself.
I find you not in business to make money, but extremely greedy! I have tried and tried to blame me and get past this. I CANNOT!
So, as of this moment, I will NOT spend another dime. In the meantime, I will have to pray about dumping you and Logos forever!
The frustration level is more my issue. But, your extreme greed is yours! In 10 years I have spent more money on Logos, and lining your pockets than I have buying and repairing my car! RIDICULOUS!  You are from here on out, completely cut off.

I agree. Even on the Forum website are ads.

I could probably buy two new cars for what I've spent on Logos...and I don't even own a car now. But that has been my choice. I almost spent $700 dollars yesterday on an L8 package but decided not to. That was also my choice.

It sounds like both of you have impulse control problems. That's not Bob's problem. People are constantly making suggestions to FL about adding new features & new resources, and that all costs money. It's just life. FL's forum has ads for FL's products...so? My reaction is...obviously! Of course it does.

Perhaps; but, after 10+ years of this, and it getting worse, not better, I am in the hopes they listen and make it more flexible.
I am fully aware some people are perfectly fine with these and 100x more "ads". Good for them. There are also those of us who are not; who find it despicable. Good for us. And if we can completely shut them off from our apps, if we choose, then so be it.
Again, they get all the adverts they want to me in email; and that is perfectly fine. But, I do NOT need the distractions when I want to study.

First, thank you, again.
Over the years you and one other have helped me deal with issues, which I appreciate. I continue to grow in frustration as things get further and further out of hand.
Unfortunately, checking/unchecking items can allow me to miss things I don't want to. For example, the blogs. But, it seems blogs are more about adverts (pushes for more products to be sold)  than for blogging (tips, lessons, etc). So, unfortunately, I have unticked those.
Am I incorrect, but was there not a time we could uncheck ads, and they were completely gone? Now, I counted over 60 "Learn more" adverts, many repetitive, in the software?
Thanks again. You really are a blessing.

Thankful Home Page Explore can be customized (gear icon). Currently have four items checked:

  • Excerpts
  • From your Library
  • Today in Christian History
  • Verse of the Day

Feature Suggestions includes lots (bit overwhelming) plus wish for language selection choices (or default to user interface language).

"My Logos Message" include many marketing items, which overwhelms useful messages (and other checked items).

Personal quirk is using a web browser for browsing & purchasing. Yet appreciate many mobile apps have in-app purchasing. My favorite shopping apps lets me put items in a shopping cart that shows estimated total with ad specials, coupons, and tax (usually within a penny at checkout, but the nearest store to my house is 30 miles away). My browser for Faithlife web sites has several tabs open to periodically search web stores:

Logos.com Live Savings => https://www.logos.com/search?limit=60&page=1&ownership=unowned&geographicAvailability=availableToMe&filters=availability-storefront-lo_Available%20At%2Bstatus-live_Status%2Bstorefront-lo_Available%20At&sortBy=Savings

Faithlife eBooks Live Savings => https://ebooks.faithlife.com/search?context=product&sortBy=PriceLow&limit=60&page=1&filters=status-live_Status%2Bstorefront-vy_Available%20At&ownership=unowned&geographicAvailability=all

Logos.com Live Highest First (look for Dynamic Pricing discounts) => https://www.logos.com/search?limit=60&page=1&ownership=unowned&geographicAvailability=all&filters=availability-storefront-lo_Available%20At%2Bstatus-live_Status%2Bstorefront-lo_Available%20At&sortBy=PriceHigh

Yes.
Blogs, eg., have helpful insights, to the software or educational info that I appreciate. But, they also are more about selling books. Too many. So it has come to the point that I had to turn it off, and sacrifice any educational blogs.
Yes, in that I turn them off, and they come back. At one point I was able to completely eradicate all ads from the software. But, with updates and upgrades, they tend to be turned on by default. Now, however, I see they are back, and I do not see where to shut them off; hence my frustrations and yes, anger.

Adam Borries (Faithlife):

This part concerns me. I take "ads" to mean "things for sale on the home page," either from blogs or "My Logos Messages". Are you saying that you have disabled blog and message cards on the home page settings, and they keep getting re-enabled?

I agree. But let's not forget the tent adverts that Paul sent with his letters. Peter included cookbook adverts from his wife, and yummy too!

But more seriously, be calm, knowing FL is pinging Google multiple times per second as you study the Word of God. You are not alone, as Google measures your spirituality by the micro-second. Smiling.

Can you provide an example of an ad you are seeing? A screenshot of your homepage would be great for this. Also useful would be details about which options you have checked in the Explore section. A screenshot is good, but just providing a list here would work too.

That's the sad thing. There ARE beneficial emails, that I had actually lost, because I was missing emails. Birthday coupons, Monthly Connect benefits, and, yes, knowing there are specials (which is not a huge biggie, because I can look on the website). The same is true for Home Page features too. I'm pretty close to your expenditures, but since 2009/2010; mostly, because with each purchase, I am hopeful and excited that I might get past a  certain point to get more use of the software. But, this is indeed MY choice. I blame no one for my choices. I don't begrudge any one from making money. When it comes to God's word, I wish it were, shall I say, more appropriate, less intrusive and less greedily.

John Kaess:

No drama from me, but i've been a Logos user since the mid 90's, and in the past year i've unsubscribed from all Logos/Faithlife emails because no matter what i checked or unchecked, i continued to be overwhelmed by sale information, but worst of all for Church oriented products. I'm retired and unchecking the church and proclaim options did not stop me from getting the church oriented emails, so i just unsubscribed from everything. I've also turned off the Homepage because it is OVERWHELMINGLY all about spamming things to buy. I've bought well over $10,000 of Logos resources over the past 20+ years, and i've made a point of eliminating all spam emails from my inbox, which unfortunately includes Logos/Faithlife. I feel the OP's pain, though i find just unsubscribing and then turning off the home page worked for me. That means i lose some of the Home Page features i'd like to see, like courses i'm taking, daily devotionals, and Christian History, but it's worth it to get rid of all the spam. I check the forums every day for important stuff.

Roflol. Now that is good. My Logos Ads; but true, And then allow us to shut them off, or keep them.
Yes, the ads I am complaining about (mostly) are the "in app ads". Since I refer to the software as "My Bible" I find it inappropriate. For ME. Others, I get it, very convenient.
For the website, it's annoying that the pop-ups have doubled. They pop-up every page now. I used to have a great pop-up blocker years ago. But, sadly, it is no more. It was (and would still be) the most effective pop-up blocker ever. Some pages it would kill several hundred items. Things you never knew existed. And, if you wanted to whitelist things, you could. Today's marketing it'd probably be in the thousands the first few seconds.
I never understood the mentality: "Let's find new ways to get around pop-up/spam blockers, to try and sell something to someone who obviously does not want to be bothered by us" It is worse, however, to me, when the ones doing this are selling the Bible. NOT that they don't deserve the money for the hardwork they do. Just not in this manner.

Mark:

Adam

I thought "My Logos Messages" would refer to messages I might receive from my faithlife.com.  I see that is not the case and have now turned that off.  For Batman, that might be the issue?  Because it seems that "My Logos Messages" are all ads.  Maybe helpful to rename it to ?My Logos Ads"?

It may come to that. But, then there goes the Home Page Features But, it may be worth it. Unfortunately, I get the feeling I'll end up reading the Bible, and I'll see
For God so loved the
LOGOS 10 now on Sale
that he gave his
NEW Commentary sale, save up to 40%...

I HOPE I am joking, But, I wont put it past them.

What has worked for me quite efficiently is to use adguard adblocker and ublock origin.  I often have to unblock to get a website working well, but I rarely have a pop up add issue.  Not sure if you have tried those.

And yet, they do get overwritten.
Previously, we could turn off the "ads" options, and everything was fine. But, when a major update or upgrade came along, they'd go back to default settings: On! But, we could waste our time turning them off. Annoying, but doable.
Now, however, I find nowhere to shut them off, and again, I decided to count how many were obvious sales ads (as some are sneaky sales ads) and I counted about 65! That by any definition is ridiculous.
And again, I realize some people are appreciative of having the alerts to sales, resources that may be of interest. But, consider in-app ads, emails, and now the website with it's every page pop-ups having doubled, it's enough to drive me sane!
I'm sure or hopeful, a pop-up blocker will kill the webpage ads. (Btw, ONCE would be ok. But the constant repetition is NOT). If we had a choice to eradicate the in-app ads, FOREVER (with US having the ability change OUR minds, not FL deciding to sneak them back in, until we shut them off) would be awesome.
The emails are a bit many, but, for FL, have decided that is where I want all my ad-related communications.

But, at this point, I am so bothered by the relentless barrage of ads, I actually hate Logos, and don't even want to ever spend a single penny more. That's an extremely bad position to have toward a company that is supposed to be entrusted with God's word. And it makes me wonder if priorities at FL are correct: God's Word first, people second, and business third. Nothing wrong with business, making money, and seeing the business stays in business, even giving people a good standard of living. BUT, in proper order. And at this point, FL has it's priorities wrong: Business first, second and third. God seems to have no business at FL.

That's a fair point. "My Logos Messages" predate our send-messages-to-other-people system. Now that we have a robust messaging platform, I can see how the "My Logos Messages" could easily be confused with "Faithlife Messages." We will take that under consideration.

I was more concerned that it sounded like Batman was turning that off those home page cards, and somehow they were getting set back to on. We take user preferences (like all user data, everywhere in the app) very seriously; there should never be a time when you set your preference and we override it.

Now MAYBE FL will be able to "get it" as well.
Thank you

We shouldn't have to loose any feature in order to stop advertising if we don't want it. But the fact is we can't turn off every bit of advertising.  I can't turn off the store tab in my library, I can turn of the store tab in search results. There should be a system wide setting to turn off the display of the store throughout the program if you don't want to use it. We shouldn't have to sacrifice other features by turning off the internet usage in order to stop results from the store showing up.

John Kaess:

Once again we shouldn't have to unsubscribe from everything in order to stop getting emails for Church related products.  This is just plain wrong.

The recent 'special event' was overkill and I have no use for FL Equip and think it represents everything that is wrong with FL these days stretching themselves way beyond the core product and expertise in order to try and get their finger in every slice of the church budget that they possibly can while there core product is not receiving the attention it deserves.  And to make the marketing for that particular event even worse MP Seminars were the worst offenders email what seemed likely daily telling me to not miss the event. MP Seminars overstepped the line with the volume of marketing they did for an event that was totally irrelevant to me and probably lots of their other customers.

If I understand you correctly there are two potentially different issues here:

  1. Not enough control over what gets displayed - turning off ads can result in other things you might want to see being disabled as well
  2. Settings you have turned off turning back on again under certain situations

Is that correct?

Adam earlier asked:

Adam Borries (Faithlife):
Are you saying that you have disabled blog and message cards on the home page settings, and they keep getting re-enabled?

I've just disabled both of these and I don't see any ads. Do you see the same thing?

It's not about the money. It's the HOW!
I never begrudge anyone anything. And, yes, we do want FL to stay in business, until Jesus returns!
I just HATE how they do it. It's wrong, and despicable. Some people, like yourself, apparently, are happy with ads in their library, pop-ups, email, mail, phone calls, billboards, TV, whatever possible means necessary. And I have NO problems with that.
I, however, don't want to open my Bible (and for all intents and purposes, it IS my Bible) and see SIXTY FIVE ads. I actually dont want ANY. Now, if they did like Kindle with ads does: upon opening, ONE non-intrusive ad and a "For You" section, I'd be ok with even that. They NEVER place ads on my Home Page, or within products THEY sell (if I download a non-Amazon app, then yes).
But, that is NOT how FL operates. And, for the greediest of the greedy, should I remind everyone, Jeff Bezos the wealthiest man alive, created the Kindle model. So, if Mr. Bob wants to be up there, maybe he should learn the Bezos model, not the Gates model?

Tony Walker:

Make every dime you can, Bob. I want you to stay in business for a looooong time.

EVERYWHERE ads.
I get upset with my security software popping up VPN, and other items. It's 1000 times worse with FL.
There is no reason that a company that has earned close to 10k from me in 10 years should do this. I'm at the point of where I will spend NOTHING with FL; and if I could get half what I put into my library, I might be very willing to sell it off. Just to be forever rid of FL and Logos forever!
That is just wrong to hate a company like this THAT much.

I have always taken responsibility for the decisions I have made.
That is nowhere near the issue. I have purchased what I have purchased, The only regret is the initial purchase, because I felt lied to. I can't say I WAS lied to; just the truth was skirted around. Like Clinton and Cochrane might have done. But, that's an entirely different issue.
Yes, I could have cut my losses at $400-600, my initial investment. I should have. I might not hate Logos now, if I had, and I might not be in as much debt as I am now; and, I certainly wouldn't be in the position I am now. BUT, *I* alone made the decision to try to ignite my initial excitement over the software, it's capabilities, and everything else.
I'd like to think I'm not into the "I have 1000 resources", "I have 5000", "I have 1 million" pissing contest we used to see with people in other areas of life (my car's engine revs this much; my video card gets this much when I over clock it; etc.)  But, as I near 5000 resources, I do find myself finding this "pinnacle" exciting.
But, in reality, WHO CARES? If it is just to accumulate a zillion books, but they are not put to use, WHO CARES?
No, my point is not even close to the points you bring up. Too many do think that is the point.

The point is, I do NOT want the ads in what is essentially my Bible. Imagine you open up your paper Bible and you see ads in it from Nelson, Zondervan or whoever. I might get one of those insert cards; but, once it falls to the ground, and I pick it up and toss it, that's it. They dont keep showing up. I don't get SIXTY FIVE every time I open it up. And, that is the best analogy I can give, I suppose. Imagine every time you open a Bible, and it's worse than the worst magazine, and all those inserts drop on the floor, and you have to pick them up and toss them. You open your Bible, and there's SIXTY FIVE MORE! They fall, and you have to pick them up and throw them out. EVERY TIME!  The first time, it's annoying. But how soon before you say, ENOUGH ALREADY?
Am I begrudging the company from making money? NO! I'm just saying, QUIT IT ALREADY! But, instead of getting better, it gets worse! Ten ad pitches is bad. SIXTY FIVE is beyond ridiculous! Esp when I have paid between 5 and 10 grand!

THAT is my point.

David Paul:
