Bob Diebel:

Can the "Read Aloud" voice be changed?

Yes, but your question needs to be fleshed out. There are different kinds of "read aloud."

  • Audiobooks, such as the one by "David Cochran Heath" in the ESV
  • System Narrator (computer generated).

There are not many resources with the audiobook synced ("read aloud"). As far as I know, any resource which does have an audiobook synced, only has one. So the answer to the question: "Can I use the 'read aloud' feature in the ESV with a different audiobook narrator?," the answer is "no."

If you are talking about the computer generated voice, then yes, you can change it. However, that is a function of your operating system (and/or other outside software you might have installed), and not a Logos function. If you want to change your system narrator, you will need assistance with your operating system, not Logos.

I changed the windows narrator voice to another of the seven available. It is much more agreeable to me.

But when I go back to Logos, it still uses the same one. I have not figured out how to use the system narrator in Logos.

Plus I am not sure why Logos could not use another of the seven voices made available by Windows.

All help much appreciated.

Thanx,

Bob.

I am not a windows user, so someone else will have to assist. However, Logos does not have their own voices... The voices DO come from the operating system. (The only exception is when the "read aloud" is actually an audio book. I assume that isn't what you are talking about).

Hi Bob,

You need to restart Logos for it to use the newly selected system narrator voice.

In the newest version of Windows 10 this still seems to be true: https://community.logos.com/forums/p/135723/881907.aspx#881907 (to get to control panel, you now have to either find it in the start menu or start typing the name). Remember to restart Logos after you do that.

It is unbelievable to me that speech settings are still in two different places in Windows 10. Logos should add a link to the setting or at least add this information to the Logos Help.

I have been able to change the voice temporarily, but it keeps reverting back.

I played around with the AI features a bit when a thread about the Faithlife Assistant was active, but I gave up on it for now.

As a vision impaired person, the AI and audio features are more useful to me than the average user. Faithlife can only divert so much manpower to lesser used features. As much as I would like to see these features enhanced, I doubt that is best for the church as a whole.

The quality of the text-to-speech voices are critical when you are dependent on them. Maybe this one feature could be prioritized even if the rest of the AI features are abandoned or put on hold.

Kathleen Marie:

That worked for me in Win 11 (but start with the Control Panel to hear the voice).

I have not found the system narrators very helpful. When it comes to a period the pause is too long and sometimes when there is a colon it reads it pronouncing the word colon so John 3:16 may be read as John 3 colon 1 6.  What I have done is copy the text that I want read into Word and replaced periods with commas and colons with space and then paste it into a text to speech reader. It is better than the system reader in Logos but still not very acceptable. Sometimes it seems to work ok. I think the technology will improve the system narrator in time.

I think I did exactly what I did last time, but I did it on a different machine. So far, I think it took. I have opened and closed the app several times, and it does not revert back.

I have spent another two hours on this. The problem is not with Logos. The problem is with Windows, and it is far worse on my desktop. In general, I think there will be less problems with a laptop than a desktop.

I got a Cortana voice, here, that works beautifully on my laptop.

I'm trying to find the best way to do change the voice on my Mac.  I have a 2021 MacBook Pro 14" m1 pro.  I changed the voice in System Preferences-accessibility-Spoken content.  But this voice does not correspond with the voice that Logos is using.

Any idea how to change the voice that logos uses?

For better forum organization, I recommend starting a new thread calling attention to MacOS platform.
