Hi,

It would be really helpful if I had a list of Mass Readings in a summarised / tabular format by day i.e.

2nd Sunday of Christmas: Ec.24:1-2, 8-12; Ps. 147:12-15, 19-20; Eph. 1:3-6, 15-18; Jn 1:1-18

3rd Jan: etc...

And also by Scripture Reference, again in a summarised / tabular format i.e.

Jn 1:1-18 2nd Sunday of Christmas, xxx, xxx (xxx = any other days when the same scripture occurs)

The summarised / tabular format would make it much easier to scan rather than wading through each page of the lectionary etc.

I suspect this is basic and I'm missing something obvious, but is there anything like this in Verbum?

Blessings,

Brian

No, but what are you trying to achieve with it - there may be ways to reach your goal.

Hi M.J.

I'd like to be able to:

1. For a given piece of Scripture in the lectionary, list where (when) else it occurs on the lectionary; and

2. (optionally, for the sake of completeness) have all readings (reference only) listed for each day of the year, in a tabular form to see patterns more easily.

Blessings,

Brian

Brian:
1. For a given piece of Scripture in the lectionary, list where (when) else it occurs on the lectionary; and

The Liturgy section of a Passage Guide run on that piece of Scripture will sort of supply this. It will return all of the times that all or part of that passage appears as or as part of a reading in the lectionary.

Please use descriptive thread titles to attract helpful posts & not waste others' time. Thanks!

I would suggest that you use Gail Ranshaw's Word of God, Word of Life: Understanding the Three-Year Lectionaries or a similar work because some of the most important patterns require solid knowledge of the traditional one year lectionary. There are only a handful of principles behind the lectionary patterns.

This can be done with a search on the lectionary or by the use of the Liturgy section of the Passage Guide as mentioned above.

Thanks M.J. - I have checked out your pre-pub recommendation and signed up for it - it will be very useful.

Noted re point 2.

Thanks both for your help!

The similar book which I could not recall is The Sunday Lectionary: Ritual Word, Paschal Shape by Normand Bonneau OMI

Thanks for this M.J. I initially found a copy for £31 which was a bit rich, but then found a copy somewhere else for £15, so bought that. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Jesuit Fr. Felix Just has a terrific website with all kinds of lectionary-related content (among others), including the kinds of indexes you're looking for: https://catholic-resources.org/Lectionary/index.html
