L/V 10+ Tip of the Day #113 Context Menu: more about references esp. reference milestones
Another tip of the day (TOTD) series for Logos/Verbum 10. They will be short and often drawn from forum posts. Feel free to ask questions and/or suggest forum posts you'd like to see included. Adding comments about the behavior on mobile and web apps would be appreciated by your fellow forumites. A search for "L/V 10+ Tip of the Day site:community.logos.com" on Google should bring the tips up as should this Reading List within the application.
This tip is inspired by the forum post: BUG or inconsistency I don't like in hover on Factbook tags - FL tagging or user tagging - Logos Forums
Using the book Catholic Church. The Roman Martyrology. Edited by Benedict XIV. Revised Edition. Baltimore: John Murphy Company, 1916., select the title phrase "The Twenty-sixth Day of February", and right click to open the context menu. Here the context menu shows:
- Selection which contains a space and therefore requires quotation marks in a text search
- Reference which is a date
The selection and reference behave as described in L/V 10+ Tip of the Day #112 Context Menu: selection vs. reference - Logos Forums
Using the context menu to build a Books search, the search is built for the reference; one must prefix the search argument with milestone: to get the resources where the date is used as a milestone. In the three resources where milestone is not required, the resource is not in date sequence but rather in alphabetical order by name. Date is, however, an indexed field.
When reference is selected there is no add note option.
Using the book Catholic Daily Readings. Bellingham, WA: Faithlife, 2009. is the same except there are two references:
- Selection which contains a space and therefore requires quotation marks in a text search
- Reference by liturgical date
- Reference by secular calendar date which, when selected, omits add note to the available actions.
Initiating a book search from the context menu again requires that milestone: be added to the search argument. On the left are references to the liturgical dates; on the right are occurrences of the liturgical date with the text associated with them.
The secular calendar date works as it has in other occurrences.
The next example was looked at briefly in the previous post. It is based on the book Herbermann, Charles G., Edward A. Pace, Condé B. Pallen, Thomas J. Shahan, and John J. Wynne, eds. The Catholic Encyclopedia: An International Work of Reference on the Constitution, Doctrine, Discipline, and History of the Catholic Church. Vol. I–XV. New York: The Encyclopedia Press; The Universal Knowledge Foundation, 1907–1913. Select the entire heading, right click to open Context Menu and see three entries:
- Selection which includes a space
- Reference by person's name labeled as Topic rather than Biography because of inconsistencies in Factbook. This is not a Factbook reference in that it has no light blue underline in the text nor link to factbook.
- A standard headword.
The search behavior is standard with two behaviors of note:
- The reference supports multiple spellings of the name.
- When milestone: is added, the = must be removed as it is not applicable to milestones.
