Another tip of the day (TOTD) series for Logos/Verbum 10. They will be short and often drawn from forum posts. Feel free to ask questions and/or suggest forum posts you'd like to see included. Adding comments about the behavior on mobile and web apps would be appreciated by your fellow forumites. A search for "L/V 10+ Tip of the Day site:community.logos.com" on Google should bring the tips up as should this Reading List within the application.

This tip is inspired by the forum post: Does Logos have a Software Development Position on OS deep linking? - Logos Forums

An example used in this thread of a potential problem is an excellent example of a Logos quirk. Consider these three resources in my library:

  • title: Canaanite Myths and Legends: Text; citation: Gibson, John C. L., and Godfrey Rolles Driver. “Canaanite Myths and Legends.” London; New York: T & T Clark International, 2004.
  • title: Canaanite Myths and Legends: Text Notes; citation: Gibson, John C. L., and Godfrey Rolles Driver. Canaanite Myths and Legends. 2nd ed. London; New York: T & T Clark International, 2004.
  • title: Canaanite Myths and Legends: Translation; citation: Gibson, John C. L., and Godfrey Rolles Driver. Canaanite Myths and Legends. 2nd ed. London; New York: T & T Clark International, 2004.

In print, these are all a single book, but because they have different requirements which is indicated in Logos/Verbum by different resource types (Ancient Manuscript, Ancient Manuscript Translation, Monograph) the book is split into three parts. It is a personal annoyance that the metadata does not show them as parts of larger work and a temporary annoyance that I can't find the suggestion on the feedback site to do so.

The problem that a user was encountering was linking to CTA 4:2:6 in this series. Part of the issue relates to the selection vs. reference and reference vs. milestone distinctions discussed in L/V 10+ Tip of the Day #112 Context Menu: selection vs. reference - Logos Forums

First, note that CTA 4:2:6 potentially occurs 3 times in the book. Because there is no textual note, it appears only twice. The Location box may be set to page number rather than reference on your application. Click on the entry and use the dropdown picklist to change the setting.

There are multiple ways to obtain the link in URL format. Using the Ugaritic text as the example, from the Context Menu (right-click):

  1. Select the text
  2. Choose reference on the tag side
  3. Choose Copy reference: URL on the action side

The result is: https://ref.ly/logosref/CTAUgariticTexts.4:2:6-7 This URL does not specify the book to be used so your priority list controls what will actually open.  The highest priority book containing the milestone for the reference will open. Put another way, all occurrences of the text will produce the same link e.g. if I use the translation rather than the original text and repeat the process, the result is https://ref.ly/logosref/CTAUgariticTexts.4:2:6-7 i.e. the same result.

If I want to link to the specific resource, I must get the link from the panel menu:

  1. Select text
  2. Open Panel Menu
  3. Copy Location as URL

The result is: https://ref.ly/logosres/canmythslegtxt?ref=CTAUgariticTexts.4%3a2%3a6-7 This will open this particular resource to this location. Note you can also get this link by selecting the text then using CNTL+ALT+C to load the URL into the clipboard. Example: https://ref.ly/logosres/canmythslegtxt?ref=CTAUgariticTexts.4%3a2%3a6-7&off=0&ctx=h%0a5+npynh.mks.bs%CC%8Crh%0a~6+tmt%CA%BF.mdh.bym.%0a+%C5%A7n+

The Context Menu gives a reference link which can open any resource with that milestone according to the contents and priority of your library. The Panel Menu gives a location link which will open that specific resource to that particular location.

Reminder of the difference between reference and milestone. The milestone indicates an occurrence of the text; the reference indicates a mention of the text.
