L/V 10+ Tip of the Day #220 FL tagging error or difference of opinion?

Another tip of the day (TOTD) series for Logos/Verbum 10. They will be short and often drawn from forum posts. Feel free to ask questions and/or suggest forum posts you'd like to see included. Adding comments about the behavior on mobile and web apps would be appreciated by your fellow forumites. This tip is inspired by a variety of forum posts.

This is a "do as I say not as I do" sort of post as I often embarrass myself with a too cursory verification of tagging "errors'. In this particular case Graham pointed out the error of my ways.

  1. I was running down the list in the Names of God interactive for the times the Holy Spirit is named as Spirit.
  2. Ro 2:29 has spiritual (as opposed to literal) marked as a name of the Holy Spirit. This seems wrong as there is no indication that a person (or diety) is implied.
  3. Note that my default Bible is the NRSV to that is the translation I am seeing.
  4. You may use F7 to identify a Bible that does treat it as a reference to the Holy Spirit. I chose the NIV.
  5. In the NIV what is "spiritual" in the NRSV is "Spirit" - looking at the reverse interlinear one can see that "Spirit" is a reasonable translation of the underlying Greek.
  6. Therefore, what is an oddity in the interactive Names of God, is simply a reflection of different translations not a coding error.

As much of the FL tagging is against the original language, the same process works for understanding many "errors/oddities" in tagging.

    As much of the FL tagging is against the original language, the same process works for understanding many "errors/oddities" in tagging.

    The tagging is still subjective but capitalizing the S in some translations and not in others can be misleading. IMHO the most blatant attempt to influence a passage occurs with the use of He in 2 Thess 2:7 (NKJV, MEV) - which is not tagged.

    Ah, yes...but to which "he" are you making reference? [li] For clarity, the ESV indicates that there are two "he"s in the verse. That is based on interpretation rather than the text itself. I suppose that supports the point MJ is making.

    Both, even though the second comes from the verb.
