trouble using collections in Logos 4 Mac

It is likely that the program works fine and the problem is I, but any help would be appreciated. I am new to Logos 4 Mac--trying to establish "collections" (e.g., several translations and commentaries made into a named collection by me). I think I have done that, but then I cannot see a way to go to the collection, hit a key, and have the whole group open where I last had them open. I see the place where intuitively it seems that the collections would be opened (in fact there is the tab that reads "open"), but they do not seem to actually open.

Any leads?

I am certainly no expert but my understanding is the collections are for the purpose of grouping resources for searches, library management etc. If you want to open Logos with a collection of resources opened, then Layouts will serve that purpose.

First clear the desktop if you want to start from scratch by typing "Close All" in the command window.

display your collection in the library, select all of the titles and you will see an 'Open Åll" button. That button does not appear unless you select more than one title.

After the are all opened, select a layout and arrange the resources, windows, links etc like you want them.

Then save that layout with a name that represents that particular collection or purpose.

Someone else may post a better way, but this is what I use.

Collections are a means of building dynamic (that is rule based) groups used for searching, either directly with search or within other components like the passage guide, cited by tool etc.

It would be nice, if on the Library view, Collections would be a selectable column, however since they are dynamic it would take additional code to support this.

You can vote for this at uservoice http://logos.uservoice.com/forums/42823-logos-bible-software-4 under "the ability to filter the library by collections".

Are you saying this is possible in the Mac version? I am not aware of a way to display a collection in the Library Window, nor have I seen this button.

Yes it works on my Mac. Simply type the name of the collection in the Library search window.

All titles that you tagged for that collection will appear.

You are using the collection tool instead of the library window.

I cant get it to work there. It needs to be in the library window. Open the library, then type the collection name into the library search window. Then open all button will not appear until you select more than one title. Then it appears on the right along with some other handy tools.

I guess there is just so much for me to figure out here. When I go to the library panel I see no way of pulling up my named collections. When I type in the name of my collection, it simply treats that like a standard search and tries to find that term in the library as a whole.

What am I missing?

That will work only if you used tagging to create your collection. If you created it by dragging items into the collection or with a dynamic rule based on some other fields of the library besides mytag: (e.g., type:bible lang:english) then the name of the collection will not be found anywhere in your library.

I'm speaking from experience on the Windows side, not Mac, but the Mac version is supposed to behave the same way.

As other have pointed out, Collections are not meant to be used for that. You make a collection for a group of resources that you'd want to limit your searches to.

To open multiple resources that you want to work with together, you have to open them one by one. Or you can open a bunch at once via the Library as follows: select them one by one in the Library, by holding down the Ctrl key as you click on each subsequent one; be sure the info pane is open on the right of the library by clicking the icon if it's not open; then click Open All.

Once you have all the resources open that you want to work with regulary together, arrange them on the screen as you like (see the videos about Layouts and Layouts Management). Save your Layout, and then you can open it up again any time you want. Or Logos will reopen it for you automatically on startup if you turn off the "Open home page at startup" option in the Customize menu on the Home Page.

My apologies to all.

I had previously tagged the titles in my collection with the same name as the collection and did not realize that it was the tagging that grouped them together in the library window. I did mention that I am by no means an expert. [:$]

Tagging will work to open a group of pre selected titles and save the layout for future use, but as pointed out, it will not be dynamic.

As Rosie includes in her signature: "Learning Logos is an iterative process, and you've got to start somewhere." Learned Library tagging is an option, could be useful for a static collection (e.g. Bibles with interlinear resources for parallel - then use mytag: for dynamic rule).

Personal challenge is continuing to expand boundaries of ignorance => as learn more, know more to learn along with increasing awe of God's design.

Library tagging is an option, could be useful for a static collection (e.g. Bibles with interlinear resources for parallel - then use mytag: for dynamic rule).

There are times when tagging is really the only good way to make a collection. If you're making a collection that is so eclectic there's no way to describe it in a single rule using title, author, subject, etc. For example, I have a collection of books on the arts. There's no way I could describe that adequately without resorting to tagging, so I've tagged the books in my Library that I know about which are arts related. It's a static collection, but I have a process I go through every time I buy new books where I tag them all as needed (I have a few other categories besides Arts; plus I put in the purchase date and name of the bundle they were part of if applicable) before assigning them a rating of 2 stars as a default. (One star is for books I know are not very useful but I still don't want to hide them.) So I'm pretty sure I'll catch any new Arts books that way, but there might still be others in my Library I've missed. When I stumble upon them, I'll add the tag. My Arts collection uses the rule mytag:arts.
