Logos 4 runs, and is adequate for reading resources (once it's managed to start up). Guides take painfully long to generate. It's faster than researching using dead trees, but it can be frustrating to wait. Indexing takes a long time.

This looks useful and very interesting to see the wide range of results people are getting. I wonder if we might be able to come up with recommendation for a minimal benchmark people would want to have on NovaBench to make Logos run acceptably fast? (But I guess everyone's definition of "acceptably fast" will be unique.)

I've downloaded the software, but I've currently got about 20 applications running and it recommends I shut them all down before running the benchmarks. Probably a good idea. In fact, it's probably best to run the benchmarks after a fresh reboot, so as to have as much memory available as possible. I'm not going to get around to it for a while though, as I'm in the middle of a dozen tasks. Do you think I multi-task too much? Maybe that's part of why Logos runs so slowly on my machine. [;)]

It's interesting how much having a discrete graphics card helped my overall score. Logos 4 runs very well on this system, although it does take about 25 seconds to get up and running the first time after booting up (7 seconds for subsequent starts). I'll benchmark my office computer later when I go down to the church building.

Also the difference between a discrete graphics card and integrated graphics does have quite an impact on the overall Nova score as shown between my score and Bob's score (only 1 point difference). Yet I suspect Logos 4 would run faster on his machine given that his CPU score is much higher. Various components could skew the overall Nova score in the same manner. So would you have to have minimal scores for each component as well as an minimum overall score?

I suspect he is running this benchmark on a server at his place of employment not on his personal desktop. The CPU alone runs between $1300 and $1600 depending on where you buy it. The OS retails for $3,999 and the graphics card goes for around $3,000. Finally, he is running 32 gig of memory. Not your average desktop system by any means so it really isn't a fair comparison to the hardware most of us run. Sort of like comparing a Ford Focus to a top model Lambergini.

I am running Windows Server 2008 R2, which has the same underlying kernel as Windows 7, but it benchmarks about 20% faster in most of the tests I have run. Most believe it's due to it being a SERVER O/S; but there are plenty of sites that show how to turn the eye candy back on and get the user apps we all love, to make it indistinguishable from Windows 7. It also has a very robust Virtual Machine manager built in, I run tons of stuff in it's own Virtual Box so I don't corrupt my base machine at all - it stays very virgin, so I don't end up having to reinstall every now and then like with Windows on the desktop. (That's the #1 reason I prefer it actually).

My disks are running RAID 1, so it's actually a little slower on write speed than it could be in either native mode or RAID 0. The drives are Hitachi HDS72101 drives, 4 1-terabyte drives grouped into 2 logical drives via RAID 1.

Runs Logos very well with a fairly large library (2500+) with multiple linked tabs open on a double monitor setup. This is a heavy laptop (mobile workstation really), but worth the weight compared with the functionality. I run the 32 bit operating system so the 4gb of ram doesn't show - don't know that I need to go 64bit after reading some of the posts.

True, but I did benchmark both OSes, and many have reported similar improvements (15% - 20%) with it.

I do think you will be happier with some form of SSD included in your machine.The Dell is a fantastic machine out of the box. It came with 2 Samsung 640 GB HDs.

If I were not spoiled rotten, there would be no need for an upgrade. But since I have learned to require instant gratification, The micro-second delays irritate me.

Each model of SSD has it's good and bad qualities. I settled on this one, as a boot, Bible, office apps drive. I'll post my comparison next week. I don't expect to see large gains in benchmark numbers. I do expect to see snappier search times. SSDSA2MH080G2R5

My system is 8 months old. Technology changes fast. Back when I ordered my system, the Intel SSDs were considered the most dependable on the market. Don't know if that has changed or not.

Hi;

Sluggish searches, but it never times out and crashes. I got it to take to the creek, or to the mountaintop. A Kindle on steroids. It does all I expected of it and more. Naturally, I have a PC for home study. ( over 1000 benchmark )

Edit: It's also very cool for inductive/markup study at a WiFi coffee shop, etc. It fits nicely in a leather bible cover, and the 9 cell battery keeps you up and running for 5 hours+.[:)]

I had the joy of being on a flight recently where there were electric outlets on the seat backs in front of us, so I was able to fly 6 hours running Logos and Word most of the time without worrying about my battery running low on my laptop. [:)]

Here we go ... using Parallels 6 on an 8Gb MBP, with 4Gb allocated to the VM

Just check out the Graphics Score!

L4 works nicely on the VM at least it did until Tuesday when it stopped working altogether because the graphics would not work (see this thread). Now I have run the tests I am beginning to think Parallels / W7 fault. No other apps seem to have drawing issues ...

If there is anybody else with a current MBP and Parallels who could do this and let me know what the graphics test is I would be grateful. (Go on ... see if you can beat the high score!)

I went on a road trip last week and turned off the nVidia graphics card to save power.

Those were the stats posted above, and more importantly, why I had graphics problems with my VM ... the intel graphic chips.

The scores below are the difference, still not stunning but acceptable .. and more importantly L4 now works [:D] ... the new reading view and verse recognition in notes ... oh the luxury!

Logos 4 runs way better than it did, but notes typing is still way too sluggish (the display never keeps up with my typing) and some resources take a loong time to load and then slow things to a crawl.

I am not familiar with your OS. Is that a system the average user would benefit from and be able to causally use?

I suspect he is running this benchmark on a server at his place of employment not on his personal desktop. The CPU alone runs between $1300 and $1600 depending on where you buy it. The OS retails for $3,999 and the graphics card goes for around $3,000. Finally, he is running 32 gig of memory. Not your average desktop system by any means so it really isn't a fair comparison to the hardware most of us run. Sort of like comparing a Ford Focus to a top model Lambergini.

Nope, not a server - this is my desktop machine. I am a professional developer by trade. We all have these machines. No one pays that for the OS because we have MSDN software subscriptions with Microsoft. OS cost is shov ing a DVD in the drive and installing it.

Frederick, your system seems pretty good but your Drive Write Speed is almost the slowest reported. Your graphics cards seems acceptable. Logos requires good disk and graphics performance, and ample memory - you have 2 of 3. You may want to explore options for a faster disk or an SSD, it might make a world of difference if it's possible to upgrade...

I may be misunderstanding what you're saying, but FYI a MSDN subscription doesn't actually allow for regular desktop use of the OS; it's purely for development and testing in a sandbox. By my understanding, even running Novabench on your MSDN OS is a violation of the license... [;)]

Actually, not quite, but a common misunderstanding.

It says "Using the software in any other way, such as for doing email, playing games, or editing a document is another use and is not covered by the MSDN subscription license. When this happens, the underlying operating system must also be licensed normally by purchasing a regular copy of Windows such as the one that came with a new OEM PC." which they are - all PCs were purchased new with Windows Vista or Windows 7 licenses (we don't buy PCs without an OS for example which some people do), so all PCs have an applicable license covering non-development use. Additionally we purchased the MSDN subscription and license.

It doesn't say you can't USE the MSDN OS to run non-sandbox things, it says that use is not COVERED by the MSDN license, so you need another license to COVER its use - in effect you need TWO OS licenses. We do, we just USE one OS for operation (although some may dual boot if they choose).

So "running Novabench on your MSDN OS is a violation of the license" is false - running it and not having a purchased non-MSDN license for that PC that covers that non-sandbox development usage would be a violation.

Well, be that as it may, my point is that your system is not the average user's system by any stretch of the imagination.
