Speed greatly increased

I bought a new laptop a few months ago. It's been performing well, however I forgot all about my Advanced System Settings. I adjusted my last pc for best performance, I forgot about these settings for my NEW laptop until tonight. Wow! So much faster in every way!

Shawn, I am glad to see you making a positive comment about the software. I hope you find joy in studying the Bible with this software. I do in spite of work still needing to be done.[:)]

How would I do this on my computer?

What OS are you using? Did you optimize something general, or something inside Logos?
JesusChrist.ru - Russian Christian Portal, with free Bible software; Timh.ru - blog

I'm guessing this is Windows "Advanced system settings," accessible via the Control Panel System applet:
Click Settings...
Then select "Adjust for best performance" on the Visual Effects tab, and optimize virtual memory on the Advanced Tab (see here for more info on that: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314482, and also Google search for "optimizing virtual memory" "windows 7" -- or substitute XP or Vista, whatever version of Windows you've got).

Your right Rosie. The only thing I have checked on the list of Visual Effects (pictured below) is "Smooth edges of screen fonts."
John, I have a lot positive to say about the software. Sorry if I sounded totally negative. Nevertheless, for 6 months I've had no speed issues except with Logos. This will help I'm sure!

I had forgotten about this "fix" so I did it..(and checked a few "must haves" for me....the smoothing of screen fonts...the tool bar styles..etc...just a little bit of eye candy...but it still improved speed for me...(and the speed was good before this)

The question that I have is why do I need to do this to run L4 and not any other program? I have other programs (video/photo) programs that will use every resource that is available, and they are not as slow as L4.

Shawn,
My post was only intended to praise you, not to be critical in any way.

I use Photoshop and I would love it to be faster; sometimes when editing a photo it's so slow you'd think that it crashed, but it's just the nature of large processor/memory intensive work...I do this fix for my Laptop in general (normally) and not JUST Logos, but I had just formatted it and forgot to reset everything.

Another thing you can do to speed up L4 is to up its CPU priority.
If you load L4, start up task manager, go to processes tab, right click the Logos exe, go to priority on the menu, and move it from normal to high (realtime will not work/you can only go as high as high).
This should increase the speed noticably, at least it seems to have for me.

Thanks for the tip Dale!

Thanks for the tip, Shawn. Hope to see you again soon.
Rosie, thanks for the setup instructions

For people like me (not familiar with how to do this) could you make some suggestions as to which box to check for optimum performance in L4. Did the Google search and found it to confusing for my simple mind.
Thanks for your help.

An application's CPU priority impacts how and when the operating system decides to "let" the CPU run that application (versus another application). Increasing it for a program will only improve that program's priority if it's competing with other programs for CPU time. So if you have significant background tasks or if you're running some other CPU intensive application, this can help. If L4 is the only app you're running, this won't change anything.
Note that I *decrease* the CPU priority of the L4 indexer if I'm trying to get interactive work done in some other application.

And the opposite is also true. If you want to increase the speed with which LOGOS searches or performs other functions, the priority of the L4 can be increased a notch or two. This is done through the Task Manager:

Two solutions:
- http://www.prnwatch.com/prio.html - a small utility that adds the option to associate the new priority with the program.
- http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Program-Start-at-High-Priority-(Windows) - instructions to make a shortcut that will start a program with higher priority
I have used the first, I have not tried the second.

I have a Dell Studio 1585, 4GB Ram, an Dual Core i3 2.26 Ghz, with a 2.0 Gb Video Card. This configuration is well beyond the "recommended." I bought this machine after consulting with Logos staff to make sure that I have enough power and memory. After running Logos 4 for a few weeks I called tech support to find out how to improve the performance of L4. They did not offer any of these suggestions or any others. I sent a very terse email to customer service. Bob P responded with an offer to refund my money. I declined and countered with a request to change the recommended configuration. Logos declined. They still have a completely unusable system as the recommend.
I would have been in the camp of complainers about L4's performance.
I renewed my efforts this morning to figure out a new configuration. I spent an hour once again with customer service and got no where. I have tried most of these suggestions. I will have to use L4 before I make a judgment. I am not impressed by the initial response. Some resources loaded faster but editing in Notes is still cumbersome.
I did find an article http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/intel-hd-graphics_7.html#sect0 on improving the frequency of the the graphics from 733 to 900. I cannot figure out how to do this on my machine. Does anybody have any thoughts?

I've been using it for a long time. It sped up my whole system incremental backups to a USB-connected drive from 5-7hr to 2-3hr.
However, I haven't noticed any discernible benefit to programs like Logos, however.

Other than editing notes, you haven't provided specifics as to which L4 functions you try to perform that you think are too slow. Can you elaborate? What functions, and how long are they taking (in seconds)?
Also, some more questions on your system... What's your disk subsystem? What O.S. are you running - x86 or x64? Are there any devices in Device Manager with icons next to them (indicating errors)? Have you run DirectX diagnostics (dxdiag.exe)?
I have L4 running on 3 different PCs - a Core 2 Duo laptop, a Dual Core i7 laptop, and a Quad Core i7 desktop. There are well-documented issues with typing into Notes fields and the like - supposedly due to bugs in Microsoft's WPF framework. Apart from that, L4 performs reasonably well, especially in view of what I'm asking it to do and what it would take to do the equivalent in any other fashion. The slowest typical task I perform is opening a fairly large layout for an ongoing study I'm doing. It probably has 20+ resources at any time, and it takes about 15 seconds to load completely. While "instantaneous" would be great, I think this response time is completely reasonable.

If your Dell Studio 1585 is a notebook, over-clocking may result in over-heating. Desktops have space for larger heat sinks to dissipate the extra heat from over-clocking.

I'm running a 4 year-old laptop (see below) and performance is OK. My graphics is the minimum 256 MB, can't find its GPU speed but I don't think you should worry about increasing your speed beyond 733!

My wife has a Dell Studio 4 gb ram and only a duo core processor...and shared video...Logos runs fine....
I've said it before and I'll point it out again...there are lower end systems where Logos runs fine, and mega systems where it doesn't....the answer is not all in the size of the machine at all....
I'm not saying that I have the answer but that it's not that simple.
I have duo core with 6 gb ram and a 1 gb video and Logos runs very fast, I have no complaints.
That's my observation.

I did....I THINK it speeded things up but I just lost interest....mines acceptable as is and so....I'm lazy.
Here is a good article on Readyboost

Also, I discovered that an SSD drive was more effective, but MAJOR LEAGUE expensive....

I am glad that you told me that your wife's system runs Logos. What security software does she have running in the background? Does she run a word processor at the same time? What about IE or Firefoxe? I usually have all that going but Logos is still sluggish if they are not running?
How big is your wife's video card memory?

John,
We don't use antivirus software...we TRY and keep resident processes in check as much as possible...
She always has firefox running...no matter what...
I'm not sure about her video mem but I'm guessing 512mb?

SSD is the way to go for a major boost in Logos speed. You can get a 60gb drive for $100 and with some work you can make that your Windows system drive + Logos, and keep your documents (and programs if you wish) on a separate drive. Logos flies on my system largely as a result of the SSD.

I would put the paging file (pagefile.sys) on the SSD.

Floyd,
thanks for the info. Does the priority utility work with windows 7 64? Have you used it/does it work well? I couldn't find much info on its site.
Thanks for your time,
Dale

The utility is working well on my Tablet PC - I have set the priority of LOGOS to "Above Normal" and it seems to restart with that priority each time I restart. The system is running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium.
I also have it installed on a 32-bit netbook running Windows 7 Home Basic, but it seems a bit more erratic in that environment - sometimes restarting with the correct priority and sometimes not.
I cannot speak for other environments. I have been pleased with the results.
I have not been able to get the batch file to work like it claims to do.
I hope that this information is of help - good luck.
