Can someone please help me with what would be a 'major' difference between BHS 4.2 and BHS WIVU? Is it necessary for one to purchase BHS 4.2, even though they have BHS WIVU? I have BHS WIVU?
Thank you!
Joel
Joel,
The Westminster 4.2 database is for morphological searches only, whereas WIVU contains both morphological and syntactical analysis of the Hebrew and Aramaic texts. (Please note that until now, the BHS WIVU database is not searchable for syntax in Logos 4, only in Libronix 3.0. So if you want to do a syntax search in Logos 4, you'd have to use the Anderson-Forbes database. The WIVU database is a provided as a part of the SESB-project by the German Bible Society, and they are currently working on getting it fully implemented in Logos 4, though there's no deadline for it, yet - hopefully sometime this year.)
If you already have BHS WIVU, it is not absolutely necessary to purchase the BHS with 4.2 morphology, but having both of them could have several benefits: http://www.logos.com/training/morphologies
Thank you for your response
Theolobias is right that there is a WIVU syntax database available in the SESB. However, when just considering these respective BHS editions there are some important differences.
WIVU
4.2
I had to shrink my program scaling to try to make as much fit on my screen as possible it still didn't all fit. One interesting difference is how the cohotative/jussive is handled between the two. Westminster adds form/meaning tags, see below.
This means you can get some interesting differences in search results between the two databases. Do you need 4.2? That depends on your needs. For most the answer is probably no, but there are many scenarios when being able to compare the two would be helpful.
Kevin,
Thanks for adding this information! Of course, these are important differences - particularly interesting for those who do research on an academic level.
Thank you Kevin and Theolobias for your help! I am actually thinking of doing OT Concentration in my higher studies. But, I just want to make sure that I getting resources that will help me in future studies, as well as in ministry. So, if you both or any think that there are some good resources for one who likes to do their major in OT studies, please go ahead and suggest. I would like to know about some good resources.
Thank you.
As I am German and did and do most of my studies here in Germany, I basically refer to a variety of German scholarship of the OT (unfortunately, virtually nothing of it is available in Logos so far), so I'm not very familiar with English resources in this area. Maybe Kevin can help you out here!

"Old Testament" is far too big a subject to be able easily to recommend resources! But one excellent introductory volume would be Old Testament Survey: The Message, Form, and Background of the Old Testament.
It's difficult to make recommendations that will fit for both academics and ministry without knowing the kind of program you're in and what kind of ministry you want. I suggest picking the brains of your OT professors to see what sort of works they recommend. The OT commentaries in the base packages tend to be thin, I would recommend using the library at your school to figure out which ones you like and then get those in Logos (if available).
Thank you Mark and Kevin. I will check the resource suggested by Mark and also some resources in my school's library. Thank you.

Does the BHS WIVU included in the Scholars (and above) base package also include the syntactical analysis, or is this just the WIVU morphology?
Just the WIVU Morph. To get the WIVU syntax database you need the SESB and use Libronix as it isn't compatible with Logos 4 currently.
