Lovin' my new Kindle, a PDF exporting tip....

So last night I went out, picked up milk, a humidifier...and oh yes, a Kindle :-) Christmas money can only sit in my pocket for so long.

I'm loving it so far. Of course I always love gadgets I own for 1 day. I did find a tip that may help those who want to export things to it in PDF format. Set your page size in Word to 4" X 5.5" inches instead of the default 8.5" X 11" and then save it as a PDF. The file will then be quite readable from there. I've saved the page size and font size as a Word template to make it easier in the future. Looking forward to some happy playing...and reading of course :-)

What font type and size do you use?

I think I use 11 or 12. That is something everyone will have to play around with for their own personal preference. Here's another tip though. Once you've exported to word press CTL+A (selects all the text) Then Press CTRL+[ and CTRL+] to increase and decrease all the fonts. If you do CTRL+A and then manually select "size 14" everything, including your headings becomes size 14. If you go the CTRL+[ route your 11 font becomes 12 and your 14 becomes 15 at the same time.

Instead of saving it as a PDF, did you know you can send the Word document to your free kindle email address and Amazon will convert it to the Kindle's file format for free? That way the text is reflowable and resizable like any other Kindle book.

We've tried it with the Kindle my wife just got and its worked out really well. Here is the link that explains it all: Link

FYI, its only free if you have it delivered to your Kindle via WiFi or if you transfer it to your device through the USB cable once you've received the converted document in your Kindle email address.

Now that I think of it, you're method might be better if you want to preserve footnotes. We've found that converting a Word file to the Kindle format converts all the footnote numbers within the text into links and places all the footnotes themselves at the end of the document.

Doing the whole thing as a PDF keeps the footnotes visible at the bottom of the page.

Ive tried to send a couple of Word docs and it never seems to want to do them. I even tried to save it as 2003 and it didn't work. Ive actually started converting them to Mobi Pocket instead. I can make it just like a Kindle book that way. The Table of Contents it generates works just like other resources and I can even add cover art to it. But for quick sends I use the PDF route above.

When I sent word docs, they did not convert them. I've had problems with PDF coming back all jumbled up so not much use to me. I've got Calibre, but not used it. Maybe I should try mobi?

Mainly, I use my Kindle to read pdf files and all have been converted freely to the Kindle format. Getting footnotes and table of contents to be rightly aligned and working well is not high on my list of priorities. I just want to read them. It won't work with pdf files that are page scans.

Most public domain files here : http://www.archive.org/index.php are available to download for Kindle in .mobi format. Some look better than others and some seem to be more of a beta type.

I do this all the time and get my RTF + DOC converted correctly.

I also set the allowed payment to be 0.00 USD, so that they would never be able to send the documents over 3G and charge me. :-)

I'm not sure if I tried the convert on word docs or not. I too set my payment allowance to $0.00 I'll have to try converting it sometime.

I'm getting brilliant results with Word docs transferred to my Kindle. I use A6, with narrow margins and arial 10 or 12. Get millions of pages, but comfortable reading. Great for reading in bed, or in bright sunlight. I've started taking it to church as we have no priest and the visiting priest has usually been first to another town where people always "need" to talk to him after the service (never before...), so our services sometimes start up to 20 minutes late, or even later. And patience is not my strong point.... But now I have some good reading matter, it doesn't matter. [;)]
