There have been many discussions on migrating Libronix from one computer to another and wanting to share or synchronise specific Libronix folders e.g. Notes/Annotations. So here is a solution that is specific to Libronix v3, that uses the relevant folders to achieve a secure backup of your user files and preferences so that you don't have to start from scratch each time you move computers, and that also enables a succesful migration/transfer without inserting every Libronix CD you purchased in the past!

It also enables you to synchronise multiple installations of Libronix.

It works across a LAN,  but doesn't reach into the clouds!

It works on Windows XP/2000, Vista and Windows 7.

For the tech minded, it uses Robocopy which is supplied with Vista/Win7 but a copy is attached for Win XP/2k.

More details, explanations and error messages can be found in the
enclosed Instructions and procedures.

Dave

I am trasfering L3 from an xp notebook to a vista notebook in order to reformat my xp notebook (L4 destroyed it). I am at the step of putting L3 on the Vista computer:

1.  I used my Gold DVD to install L3

2.  I ran all the updates to be at the latest L3 release so it would match my back up copy

3.  I copied and pasted all my resources to the vista notebook

4.  I copied and pasted GetPaths into the windows folder on vista

5.  But when I run the PERMISSIONS script, I am denied permission.  I dont know why.  Can you help?

I have taken the precaution of copying all L3 folders I had on my xp computer.  If I cannot use the scripts, can I manually copy and paste the folders in the right places on the vista notebook?  If so, what are all the paths L3 hides in Vista?

thanks

Mark

Does anyone have an answer to this question I have asked?

Have you tried right clicking it and use run as admin?

That worked.  Thanks.

Okay...I have done the transfer, but the numbers don't add up...

On my original laptop....I have 563 locked titles, 5226 unlocked, and 5808 altogether (Those numbers don't add up)

On my second laptop where I have transferred my library....I have 580 locked titles, 5202 unlocked, and 5777 altogether (These numbers also don't add up)

Does anyone have an explanation?

1.  How come the numbers on my original computer don't add up?

2. How come the numbers on the second computer don't add up?

3.  How can I be sure I am not missing any titles if this happens? I have updated both computers, used the latest backup license I had before the transfer and have synchronized licenses online.

One final note:  The first time I ran the bibliography, I got different numbers.  Is it possible that the bibliography in L3 has a bug?

Further update:  since writing this post, I notice now that all known resources on my second computer has jumped from 5777 to 5793 despite the program showing it was done counting.  Any explanations?

It could easily be the new way Logos 4 handles multi volume works.  For example. If you had Kevin's Commentary in v.3 and it has 344 volumes, in v. 4 it is 1.  So that reduces the count by 343 books. Looking at your numbers I would guess this is your issue.

The only way for sure is to go painstakingly through the list and compare.  Sadly I am not sure there is a better way.

If you read the Instructions you would know the answer to that one:-

IMPORTANT: Permission to perform Restore operations/scripts

The restore operations/scripts will not run in Vista unless you have access to certain Libronix folders (section 5). The Permissions.cmd script will provide all the necessary permissions when you right click the file and run it with Administrative privilege.

[SorryBig Smile but you will also gather that Files is not really a forum but a repository]

The total numbers from the folders involved in your copy and paste (in Windows Explorer) should add up - that is more reliable than what Libronix tells you! If those folders are included in your Resource Path then any other discrepancy could be due to your licence or the Bibliography report.

Bibliography can give you wrong answers unless you Refresh Resources beforehand (else the count will include resources that were on a Libronix CD/DVD you had in the drive + resources you manually deleted!). Finally, if you had any Hidden resources, Bibliography does not count them!

The Bibliography report is also notorious for not telling you the TOTAL immediately it has finished displaying - you may have to wait for a minute or more to get the final number!

I did read the instructions, several times before posting my question.  The answer to my question ended up being what is listed below.  I added it to the instructions I keep locally in order not to forget:

"If you cannot run permissions, try right clicking it and use run as admin"

I did not realize this was the files forum.  I see some changes have been made to the forum to help us realize which post is in which category.  Dave, if you would like me to delete my entries in order to keep your original post separate, just let me know.

ok i got this far

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE HE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Run Permissions.cmd so that Restore operations will have the necessary access to Libronix files.

when that ran i was denied access.  i tried right clicking the cmd file but i didnt find any 'run as admin' option.

what next?

ok with apologies to all you tech savvy people- the instructions make no sense to me.  can i not just copy the libronix folder to a flash drive, and the copy the contents of the flash drive to the c drive of a new computer and have everything that i've already got?
