Logos 4 CPU usage -- slow performance -- Vista
Is anyone else having problems with Vista and very poor performance?
On my system (which is more than adequate) Logos is using 50-60 % of the CPU all of the time. Even when the program is idle... even when minimized, it constantly bumps up to 50%. When open it uses a good 60%. As a result the program is jerky, and painfully slow. For example it take 2-5 seconds for each character typed to appear, or it takes 10 seconds to be able to highlight a selection in the Bible. The scroll bar is not at all smooth and frequently it takes 10-15 seconds before you can pick up the slider at all.
Other programs work fine. Even when Logos is hogging all the memory.
So, I discovered that if I revert back to "Windows Classic" desktop in the "appearances Settings" all is well. Everything is perfectly smooth, normal functioning. For now I can do that while using Logos, but I hate to have my screen that ugly all the time. AND I suspect that something is broken in Logos to make this happen.
I've got a NVidia GeForce 9800 GT video Card. I am running two monitors.
If anyone has any ideas I'd wellcome them. I turned it in to Tech support, but they must be inundated right now.

Is it Logos or Logos Indexer that's hogging the CPU. It sounds like whenever the other apps needs it, it's given up. That's probably the indexer then. It's designed to use the CPU when it's not in use and give it back as soon as another app needs it.
If so, as soon as it finished indexing, you'll be fine.

I am running Vista and am not seeing anything like you are seeing. In Task Manager under the Processes tab do you see Logos4.exe taking up these CPU cycles? I know that when the indexer (Logos4Indexer.exe I believe) is running it will show heavy usage. My Vista machine really slows down with the indexer running.

Guys, I don't think it is the indexer. No logo icon in the icon tray and that should be long over with... ?
Logos is trying to do SOMETHING behind the scenes, but I can't figure out what. In fact it takes over Logos to the degree that I have to shut it down with task manager.
Note that when logos is all bound up like this I can use other programs without a problem.
It looks to me like Logos is trying to rhythmically access the web for some reason.
Note also that the problem seems to have something to do with the exegetical guide. When I work the EG the usage soars and then eventually freezes Logos.
I have discovered that the "Web Shield" component of AVAST virus protector is a problem. If I turn that off logos behaves... most of the time.
I'll get it figured out eventually.

If you are doing a lot of library management, creation of collections, tagging library, creating workspaces, L4 is syncing those with the cloud and this causes my computer CPU to go high. I do believe this is a known issue and they are working on a fix. If you are not doing these tasks, then I don't have any other ideas.

Mark you asked about if Logos was showing as the culprit in task manager. The answer is yes. And yes, my machine is working hard when the indexer is running, too.
My problem is probably just some idiosyncrasy with my machine. Right now I'm thinking it has something to do with Avast antivirus software.

I'm guessing that what you are talking about is exactly what is happening. My machine tries to access the cloud and AVAST is getting in the way.
At the moment I have the "Web shield" in Avast turned off and logos is quiet and well behaved. ???

I am having similar issues. Especially when resizing. It also happens somethimes when bringing up new tabs in L4. I'll often have to wait 4/5 seconds for it to all streighten out and be readable.

I too have less than snappy L4 performance, although I don't have a constantly high CPU usage. It lags when resizing window panes and when scrolling (down-key, mouse wheel, scroll bar, whatever). I've watched while scrolling, and my CPU usage jumps up to 50-60%. Something about it seems like it is trying to keep everything (windows, references, etc) synched up in real time, rather than waiting for the active window (the one being scrolled) to stop, then synching up everything.

The other option if you know you do not want to sync, is to go to tool/program preferences and turn of "use the internet". That change requires a restart. Turning it back on also requires a restart and as such may not sync your changes. So, if you are not doing much that will need to be sync'd give this a try and see if it helps. Perhaps they should have a sync now feature rather than have it going off constantly until they get the CPU usage fixed.

Thanks for the reminder. Turning off internet make using notes much better. Before, it would start uploading notes changes as soon as I started using the notes, and that was not good. It also prevents the automatic metadata download at startup which was giving me fits as well. Too bad I now have to remember to switch it back on to get updates.

I have experienced the same issues, in fact even after indexing and downloading and everything else, even scrolling is extremely slow in vista 64

You can enter Sync Now in the Command Bar or click on the 2 circular arrows icon to the left of Layouts on the Toolbar. So presumably if you turn off the use of Internet and turn off Automatically Download Upgrades, the performance should be better. Just enter Update Now and Sync Now in the Command Bar when you want to save things to the Cloud.

Those of you who are all "experiencing similar issues," could you give more details???? The original post seems to have resulted in AVAST being the culprit. If you want to get your's figured out we need more info than "oh mine does that too!" - i.e. it's more than that you just have W7 or Vista 64. I've used both since the beta and haven't had your problems. More information is needed if we're going to figure out what the issue is.

Mark, I think so. Just have to take the time to figure it out. I tried setting it to skip the URL but it didn't seem to help. Probably did it wrong. I'll let you know.
I do want to report that with that one Web module turned off (Avast) Logos 4 is running great.

For all of you who are having trouble with slowness... don't give up. My original problem seems to have been solved for the moment and Logos 4 is very smooth with no delays, and great performance.
I want to reassure you all that the slowness is fixable and that Logos 4 is all that you could hope for once you get that worked out.
Things that seemed to help me.
1. Turn off internet as John Fidel suggested. And remember to restart. I missed that part before.
2. Check your anti virus software. I think that contributed to the problem.
3. You might make sure your video graphics driver is up to date. I know it sounds strange, but that seemed to have some positive impact on my machine. (NVidia)
