Useless

I specifically purchased my iPad to read the books in my library. The fact that Logos still does not sync my bookmarks from my Desktop and allow me to read on my iPad from where I left off is amazing. All my other ereaders have this feature and as I remember it, Logos advertised it as an advantage of purchasing Logos4. There may be some convoluted, complicated way to work around this difficulty, but as I can with my Kindle, I simply should be able to bookmark my place on my desktop and be able to pick right up on my iPad. I am extremely disappointed. Please correct me if this is wrong or let me know why this simple function is missing or can't be coded into the program.

I believe what Logos syncs is not the bookmarks since they are limited in number. It does sync favorites, all mine are synced. If you create a favorite folder called current reading and save them there it should sync. I am using the latest Logos app, as well the current Logos beta. I hope this helps.

I was going to suggest this, but hesitated. I have similarly created a folder called 'current reading' and am able to open reading from that location on my mobile device. Is there anyway of adding to favourites from the mobile device and then sending this to a folder other than 'mobile favourites'? Without being able to specify the destination of the saved favourite from the mobile device even this workaround (as useful as it is) is slightly deficient.

The other thing I have noticed is that since the upgrade to the sync framework (implemented earlier this year) the mobile device does retain the last page of reading. Similarly the history function appears a lot more accurate and the resource tends to open to the most recently read page (whether this be on desktop or mobile). I don't recall having to search for a page since the implementation of sync 2 (and I do flit between resources and tend to have between ten to twenty books on the go at any one time).

It appears at this time mobile favorites have to be moved to a specific folder when we get on our desktops.

Lol, I've done that too. I also find that where I am reading on the desktop syncs with my Logos app.

Well Randy, you made me dig a little. That's a good thing. [:)] I have never used "bookmarks" because I generally have not really needed to do what you are wanting to do, although perhaps I would use it more if it did sync with the mobile app.

You are right, as far as I can tell, that the mobile app does NOT have the "bookmark" feature. It does have "favorites," which works very similarly. I would say that the two are identical, except that bookmarks are intended to be temporary, whereas favorites are intended to be saved long term. [I use favorites]. It is nice that you can create a book mark quickly with a couple of keystrokes.

It is not (quite) true that the mobile app doesn't allow you to pick up where you left off. In fact, Logos would tell you that it DOES have this feature, but my experience is that it is a little bit quirky. You should be able to pick up where you left off if you use the following steps:

Make sure your L4 installation has had a chance to sync to the servers when you leave off reading.
Close the resource on your desktop.
Open the mobile app and allow it to sync.
Open the resource.
Make sure your mobile app has had a chance to sync to the servers when you leave off reading.
Close the resource on your desktop.

If you do these things, you should have syncing locations. The biggest problem is that these things don't always happen. Here are things that commonly go wrong:

Probably the biggest issue on the mobile app is that if you left the resource open when you used the mobile app last, it is my experience that it will open back up to the place left off at when you used the mobile app last.
The biggest issue on the desktop app is when you don't close out the resource, and the resource is saved to a layout. The resource will open back up to where it was saved last when you used the desktop app last.
Another issue with the mobile app, is that sometimes the sync seems to need a kick start. Since apps don't normally actually close on iOS, but rather go into hibernation, when you "reopen" the app it isn't starting from scratch, and consequently isn't doing its opening sync. You can fix this by actually closing the app, thereby forcing a sync when you reopen.

You can certainly mess around with these steps and I think you will find that they do work. Personally, I would hate to rely upon these steps each time, although I do them out of instinct quite often. Until the official "bookmark" feature is added, you could always try "favorites," which are not quite as convenient, do work.

Philana is right… Of course, if you so desired, you could always use the "mobile favorites" as your "current reading" folder. [;)]

I do appreciate, as usual all of the timely responses to my tirade. However, I still say 'useless'. At this technologically advance point in history, a premier, top shelf application such as Logos4 not having a simple and rudimentary bookmark system is simply unconscionable. A person that has invested several thousand dollars in a product has a reasonable expectation that that product will function as advertised.

I need a simple, consistent and unfallible bookmark system. It is very inconvenient to leave my house/ computer and be getting something to eat and when I open my iPad to continue reading find that because I have omitted a certain procedure at home shutdown or experienced some random quirk I do not have access to where I was.

After reading about the current technologically advanced point in history (now), I was just curious to see if a Bible software program on smartphones in the pre-technologically-advanced-point-in-history had bookmarks.

Having just unloaded our smartphones that we've used since the early 2000s (before the dawn of iTime), I checked both Bible programs on the ancient smartphones. Indeed they both had (and still have) 'bookmarks'. Both were touch-based; you simply pressed down firmly, and then selected 'Bookmark'.

So, indeed, bookmarks do appear to be pretty routine. Hmmm ... now for 'unconscionable' ... that sounds like a curious usage ...

Sorry for the disjointed use of the word DMB. I was unconsciously referencing to my beginning post where I stated that Logos had advertised that easy (and I assumed foolproof) syncing between your desktop library and your mobile devices could be maintained. I used the word 'unconscionable' in the sense of dishonest and misrepresent.

Favorites should accomplish what you want.

To Set-Up for Bookmarking on Desktop (Only Needs to be done Once)

Type in the Command Bar “Close All”
Place cursor over words and drag it to the shortcut bar

When your reading on your computer when you stop reading:

Drag the tab to the Mobile Favorites folder
Hit the close all shortcut
Hit sync

When you open the Logos app it will be there. It does sync, it’s just good practice to tell it to sync before closing. Favorites are bookmarks and they do sync.

If you delete the favorite on your iPad you can then add a new favorite where you leave off. Once you open the desktop app you can click on your new favorite from the “mobile favorites” and start reading where you left off.
