Highlighting Bibles
Is there a way to make highlights sync across all versions? For instance, if Iake a highlight on John 1:1 in the NIV an have it automatically highlight John 1:1 in the versions into library.

I think if you also highlight the VERSE NUMBER then it goes across versions. If you only highlight the text of the verse it merely highlights that verse in that version. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

If you highlight the text then it is specific to that particular resource. If you create a note against a reference (as opposed to by selection) then this note appears in all versions - but all you get is the note icon as opposed to the highlighted text.
One of the problems of trying to share highlights across versions is that different versions have different verse numbering schemes - which would cause some interesting challenges!

Joshua - Notes can be attached either to a "selection" or to a "reference." Notes that are attached to a "reference" are available in any versified resource at that reference point (i.e. "John 3:16" in all bibles and commentaries). Highlighting notes, however, are always notes attached to a "selection." When you highlight in Logos, you select which parts of the text you want to highlight. There isn't an option to "highlight a verse." You must select what you want highlighted down to the very character. If Logos were to add this feature, it would automatically highlight the entire verse (You couldn't select just a sentence or a phrase in the verse). Furthermore, it would necessarily highlight ALL of the text related to the verse in your commentaries and other versified resources! Imagine 6 pages of solid highlighting text on John 3:16!

OK. I have never illustrated this before, but perhaps I should do so to make it more clear what one of the major problems would be.
In the first screen shot, I have two notes. One is attached to a "selection" (the yellow highlighting). Even though the entire verse is highlighted, it isn't attached to the reference… I have "selected" everything from the verse number to the last punctuation mark. The second note (the red star) is attached to the "reference" John 3:16.
To illustrate what this would look like if you could highlight by "reference," I have opened a commentary. I have made the text tiny and floated the window to give a fuller grasp of the issue. Notice that there are two red star icons. That is the same note attached to the reference "John 3:16." The first red star is there because "John 3:16" is included in the section "John 3:16-21." If you could highlight by reference, anywhere there is a red star icon for this note, the entire text would be marked in highlighter. To illustrate this I have highlighted the text for you. As you can see, this would be highly undesirable to say the least!

Thanks for the screenshots - interesting thoughts.
However, isn't this making an assumption about how this theoretical function might work? While what you describe is totally consistent with how notes by reference are visible across resources with Bible indices it wouldn't need to work that way when doing notes by selection.
It would be possible, for example, to only replicate those highlights across resources which have type "Bible" and those this which have type "Bible Commentary".
One might want to have a switch to toggle this option.
All the other issues around versification still apply but it would be possible to address the problem of large associated highlights in commentaries.
I appreciate this is all quite theoretical as I doubt this capability will appear!

I searched for this topic and decided to resurrect this thread by exploring things further.
I'm not sure if highlighting Bibles has changed in Logos 5 but I know I don't fully understand it. For instance when I currently highlight words in my NA 28 the highlights show up in my ESV but not in my other Greek texts. Perhaps this has something to do with how my Bibles are prioritized.
Is there a way to control highlighting so that all the text in my Greek Bibles is also highlighted like my NA 28?

Not really - there was a major change in 4.5 but it has remained substantially the same in L5

Can we explore a bit about what you mean about highlighted words in NA28 appearing in the ESV? As discussed earlier in this thread - and elsewhere - highlights are specific to resources so I don't understand how this can be happening.
- Do you mean that when you apply a highlight to text in the NA28, the same highlight appears in the ESV? If so, I don't understand how this is happening?
- Or do you mean that when you select text using your mouse in the NA28, the same text is shown as selected in the ESV? If so, this is using something known as "sympathetic highlighting" which can be enabled / disabled from the visual filter menu.

At least in applying basic highlights, it does not happen on my computer, see attached picture. So, can you be much more specific exactly how you are doing it - which highlight are you applying, how do you apply it (I have the yellow on a shortcut I just hit the Y key for example, you may be doing something different). It may be specific to how you are doing it that the problem appears.

Yep, you're right… [:)] It would be a great feature for some… It is still, however, a bit more complicated than some make it out to be.

Learned NA27 and NA28 do not have Sympathetic Highlighting in Logos 5.0b Beta 1 on OS X 10.8.2, which is another feature parity issue.
Highlighting a word in NA28 (with Links to Open Panels checked) does appear in other resources with Sympathetic Highlighting checked:

All this time I've kept Sympathetic Highlighting and Links to Open Panels off, because they never seemed to do anything at all in any of the Bibles I regularly use -- and now I find out it's probably worked in Windows all along...[:(]
Would you mind checking the Hebrew Bibles and LXX's for parity issues as well?
