I did something that should not be done. I hid my entire Perseus collections. Surprise

I didn't know that unhiding would be something that is a one-at-a-time process to unhide them. Could somebody help me to come up with some kind of solution? If I unhide one book, there is a delay as it works with the library. If I were to repeat this process for the 1000+ books, well, you get the idea...

Any solutions? Can I uninstall and then re-install? Is this the only solution? Would that work?

Future upgrade idea:  Unhide All button in Preferences right there above the list of hidden resources.

Thanks to anyone who could shed some light on this matter.

Chris

"Hidden" books is a misnomer. It should be called "Archived" because the books are removed from your system and must be redownloaded (and potentially reindexed). Personally, I want to see a REAL hidden books feature… a reverse prioritization if you will.

It sounds like you want these books… just not most of the time. Is that true?

I don't know if Logos would be able to help you more quickly on their side. (i.e. remove your "hidden" books list).

Sorry to hear that Chris. When you re-install Logos it would not help the problem since your choice is synced to the servers. You might call to the Customer Services to see if they can un-hide that for you.

As I understand it from one of Bradley's comments a while back is that Logos is paying the freight on server downloads (along with everything else, but more than I would have expected). So I'd assume they want to minimize hidden/unhiddens (thus hiding the hiddens in Tool/Setup instead of Library).

If that is the case, why do I have to download everything before I can hide it?

Thanks for the thought. I have tried that through technical support and there was not a way provided.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Is there anybody out there who has resolved a similar problem? Thanks

What if you would ask Customer Service to delete your Perseus license and then you would "buy" the collection once more? Wouldn't that solve the problem? I know it might be to big hassle to CS to do that.

To fgh, good point. This forum likely has a lot of software people, and I suspect each one tries to imagine what the thinking was, when Logos4 was designed.

In Libronix, of course, you pick and choose what you want downloaded. I really liked that since it kept my library nice and tidy (usually I unchecked lectionaries, Bob's evangelical free stuff, etc).

But as the Logos4 design team sat in the tightly locked Bellingham think-tank room, download 'everything' must have really been an attractive option. Then the user would have to one-by-one drag each offender to the hidden area and then stare at them for the remainder of the Logos4 user-life (of course later allowing multiples per drag).

The latter (multiples per drag) is interesting as well, since humans don't alway drag correctly. In which case, as the OP mentions, one by one ....

I'd have to assume the correcting of multiples per drag was intensional. They all smiled likely at the thought.

Did you ever resolve this? I'm in the same situation.

I think Bohuslav's suggestion is probably the quickest workaround for this. Logos needs to implement a quicker way to unhide lots of resources at once, but they do not appear to be inclined to do that, as they never intended this feature to be one to allow people to hide and unhide back and forth at will. They expected it to be a one-way only thing. They do sometimes act surprised when people use their features in ways they never dreamed of, and it takes a concerted effort on the part of us users to get them to give more support to the way people are actually using the product.

Wonder about sending email to Logos Technical Support => http://www.logos.com/contact to see if hidden resources could be changed on Logos servers so would sync to Logos installations ?

John,

Sorry to hear about your situation.

I worked a little each day and if I recall correctly, it took somewhere along the lines of a couple of months to restore the resources restoring them one by one. I know that sounds difficult. I contacted support and there was no clear way to get help other than the task of unhiding them one by one. If I recall correctly, even if you uninstall and reinstall, it is still registered with the cloud as hidden. Therefore, manually unhiding is the only known way at this point.

Perhaps I can shed a bit of hope on this situation and that is that as you unhide resources, the process will eventually get faster over time. Set a goal of how many resources you will restore each week and perhaps break that down to a rough daily goal and try to stay focused and you will eventually get there.

Hopefully, one day, someone will implement a button that says, Unhide All.

Blessings,

Chris

Thanks for the ideas - given this seems to be only possible with about 3000 mouse clicks I've written a script to do the clicking for me. Hopefully after 9 hrs I should have the books back. I totally didn't realise I was basically trashing the books.

Fortunately I have a second computer I can work on while my unhiding happens.

Seems like an issue Logos should fix really but Logos is still awesome.

Yes. "Hidden" books should be called "archived resource licenses" since the books aren't hidden but deleted from your system!

John,

That is a really good solution. If it would be possible, could you post the outcome and what platform / software and script you created so perhaps some other persons who experience this know about an automated solution?

I am thankful to God for Logos software.

To any other readers of this thread, the same thing happens in Logos 5, so upgrading will not resolve it.

Blessings,

Chris

Hi All,

I did get all my books back yesterday. For anyone who would find it helpful to see how I'll attach a screenshot. This was done on a mac with a bash script and a free commandline app called cliclick. Similar scripting is possible in most programming languages so someone with windows could do similar.

The script can't detect where to click you have to place the window carefully and I used grab.app to get an xy coordinate of the button.

All the script does is click a predetermined location every 10 secs about 1800 times.

Cheers,

John

Brilliant solution, John!

Now you'll have to figure out which Perseus books you want to hide again. But at least this part you can do in batches instead of one title at a time.

Then vote for An easier way to hide and unhide multiple resources rather than one at a time.
