I just downloaded Logos 4.6a but I can't seem to find where the new Syntax for Sermons and Illustrations is located. For example, I just added another Personal Book successfully but did not see this option available.
It isn't an "option," but something you have to add to your .docx file. There are some sample documents HERE and HERE.
I had the same question at Bill. Last night (after getting 4.6a) I finally figured out what this means.
I went to the second link that Alabama posted and copied the table "sermon type with venue" and pasted it into the Word doc of my sermon. then I completed the 2nd column of the table with the appropriate information for this particular sermon. When I compiled my PB the data for speaker, text, topic, venue, etc. it was all searchable
This is what my Word 2010 sermon template looks like
I am sorry, but I fail to see how this is beneficial.
If you click, in Logos in the newly created PB in the Locator Bar on the index on the left, it takes you to the index at the bottom of the page. Once you click one of those hyperlinks in the bottom of the page, and they ALL point to the sermon title, you go to the first page to the Sermon Title.I think I must be missing something. I would like to understand this supposedly great new feature.
I think I must be missing something. I would like to understand this supposedly great new feature.
The "new" feature is that you can now index your sermons with topics, tags, speaker, venue, illustrations, etc. The point is that you can have your sermons in L4 and they can be fully searchable and discoverable.
This feature is what turns a "regular" PBB book resource into a collection of indexed sermons.
It would usually be used for two or more documetns/sermons etc.
When there is more than one document it does not just send you back to the bottom/top etc but to that specific document referred to by thatt index entry.
This is how the former Libronix 3 Sermon File used to work.
It is something many of us have been waiting for since Nov of 2009 when Logos 4 was introduced.
I am very relieved and happy to finally have this very robust feature.
Thank you Logos developeers.
OK, thanks. I'll try that...
David,
I tried to paste the template into this docx [see below] but, for some reason, I did not get anything [see screenshot #2] when I produced the Personal Book.
If I am understanding correctly, you were expecting the table from the word document to be shown in the personal book. Is that correct? I don't think the table is supposed to appear... it is "behind the scenes" in the compiled book, just like other syntax you might add.
I did not get anything
Your syntax graph has the material typed into the Left side" fields.
But "your" material must be typed into the fileds on the right side of the graph in order to be processwd correctly. As in the sample syntax grid:
I don't think the table is supposed to appea
In one of the earlier beta versions they "took out" the graph.
But some of us asked that it be returned in order to make multi-sermon resources.
The latest version does show the syntax graph:

Thanks for clarifying that Steve. [:)]
Thanks for this suggestion, Steve. But, I have tried left justifying both the template and other material in the document - and though the post is successful but it does not include the template. However, when I publish the sample message "The Sin of Unbelief" as a Personal Book, it does include the template (appears as in the original document).

I'm going to assume that the answers to all 3 of the following questions is "yes"
When you did this, were you able to bring up a Table of Contents for the PB resource that did not work?
Did you also use a copy of one of the latest syntax tables?
Were you also using the latest 4.6a RC-1?
[Sorry for asking such "simple" questions. As one who has used this tool a lot, I am really trying to figure out why you are having these issues.]
Steve, my answer would be YES to all three. [I also have attached a screenshot of the original docx and a screenshot of the Personal Book as it appeared inside Logos 4.6a RC1.]
Dear Bill, I'm pretty sure that your sermon syntax fields graph/table, as used, will not create an index.
[When you do want to include numerous examples in a field (ie Scripture) they do have to be separated by a semi-colon.]
Can you tell me your thinking in why you have created your "hybrid" version of the Logos supplied syntax graph?
What were you hoping that it would produce/accomplish that the supplied graph/table could not give you?
[I am afraid that I am not explaining this correctly]. but as I understand this process: Logos reads the left column (perhaps from top to bottom?) with its various syntax code fields in order to create the index BUT the values (text) that you supplyfor the desired index are taken from the fields in the right column.
The Logos 4 PB "engine" "must" already be able to deal with the underlying "xml" code to produce the content of the resource but in addition also needs to have a specialized code shema to execute or create the index. (Unless I am missing something, your supplied version is just not the "right" language--the computer engine just cannot understand it so no index is produced)?
Bill, this is how I would have created "your" syntax code:
Please note that "Fall" will not be caught as a proper date.
And this is how it then appears in a PB resource:
Steve,
Where do I find the correct graph table - and do I then simple paste it to the docx [or what]?
Bill,
Logos posted them together with the release notes.
Hope this helps,
Mick.
Mick,
That's what I used - but only the top part of it. Do I want to paste the whole table on the docx?
yes, sure.
That is what I used in part [that is, I pasted in the top part on the docx document]. But am I supposed to paste in the whole graph table?
Here's part [the upper section] of the docx that I used [attached] but it didn't show anything [when putlished] except the words "Optional Speaker and Venue".
I pasted in the template from Spurgeon's sermon [The Sin of Unbelief] and modified it for myself - and it worked. But the one's suggested by Logos [4572.SermonFileMetadataTableSample.docx] didn't work. I also noticed that it is a different format than the Spurgeon one.

Glad!

It seems from your screenshot, you put info into the left column of the table, wheras the idea clearly seems to be that you leave the left column alone and fill your information into the right column. If you leave the right column empty, it won't work.
btw. The format looks clearly the same to me in Word. I haven't bothered to check the XML representation which gets processed by the PB compiler. Can you share the differences you see?
What are the templates you are pasting into your docx?
i just added the sermon table as a macro to Word. (see this post).
When the macro is run it embeds the table into your docs where your cursor was before calling the macro. From viewing your images in the different posts, it appears you are entering your info into the table in the wrong cells. If you turned on all borders for the table you would then see clearly where the cells are that you need to enter your data.
Can I add any syntax features to the list? For instance, can I add a row that let's met sort between "SERMONS" and "ILLUSTRATIONS" or should I just create a different PB for each collection?
Can I add any syntax features to the list?
I tried it and it really did not recognize it. Well it printed but did not index.
I use these exact ones that Logos provided.
See attached a sample file that was used before in beta-testing this, I updated it from the file you posted - when you build it, it will generate all the indexes at the end.
6644.Sermons by the Fount.docx
This may show how you could do your sermon collection. Of course, you may choose to have the sermons each in a different file and then build them together into one resource.
