I currently own the Logos 4 Bible Study Library. Is it worth paying for an upgrade to Logos 5? As I have the books I need I'd probably go for the Minimal Crossgrade.
Any views would be be gratefully received.
Thanks
Anthony
Welcome to the forums Anthony. If you have all the books you need, and not interested in getting those come with upgrading to a base package, then I would recommend that you purchase the crossgrade that has all the data sets. Sorry I cannot find the link to compare them.

Perhaps you can tell us a bit more about how YOU use Logos. What sort of things do you do? What features do you use most often?
I use Logos in the main for personal study and for preparation for our Home Study Group. This involves looking at commentaries and for scripture linked to the passage/topic we are studying. Also trying to put this into a social context using non-Biblical sources and looking for events occurring at the same historical time and before and after the event. Maps and pictures are also useful for some studies.
Anthony,
I wouldn't worry too much about upgrading -- Logos will eventually offer a free upgrade to the basic "engine"
I have Logos 4 Platinum plus lots of other resources (commentary sets etc) for a total of 2671 resources and I won't be treading down this upgrading path again. As a pastor I use these resources on a weekly basis and see no true benefit in the cost/value ratio for the upgrade. Do I use the full functionality of the program? -- no. Others might and your mileage may vary - but I found myself upgrading to the newest and shiniest version and never really utilizing the new bells and whistles. Bottom line for me has been that what I really want is a program that allows me to collect a library and do simple searches. I don't need much more than this.
The cost for these upgrades is simply getting too expensive for my taste. Competing Bible software platforms can offer their upgrades for $50.00 or less (Just upgraded a competitor for $25.00 -- included all that was new to the platform). Until Logos drops its upgrades into this area (which should include all that is new to the platform) I won't be upgrading. Sometimes companies forget that we are all facing difficult economic times. . .
I've been a Libronix / Logos user since Libronix alpha testing days. . .
Thanks for your useful reply. I was surprised at the cost of the upgrades. Like you I've been using the program for some time Logos since version 1 then Libronix, I must have spends £100's on upgrades just to get the latest engine. Think I'll stick with Version 4 until a free upgrade to 5 arrives as it does everything I need. As a retired IT manager I tend to get the latest upgrades just so I have the current version!

If you're happy with it, good! Otherwise, since you wrote you are interested in timelines, you maybe want to take a look at Logos Core Datasets, which contains this feature: http://www.logos.com/product/28494/logos-5-core-datasets
Also, for infographics etc. I'd recommend the Faithlife Study Bible - you can't really go wrong as it's Free (at least until 2014 for non-package owners)

You are deceiving yourself. No one has "all the books" they need. [st]

I only need one more book, but am unsure which one it is; therefore, I must keep purchasing more and more until I find that one elusive book that I really need [:D]
If you don't wish to shell out more money, you can always do the free upgrade to Logos 5 when they make in available (maybe January). You will get some of the new functionality without paying out a dime.
I upgraded to the L5 Silver package from the L4 Scholars package. When the cross grade come out I paid another $6 and change for the remaining two data sets which were not included with the Silver upgrade.
I teach an adult SS class and I find the extra features and resources helpful. I could have done without them, and never been aware of what I was missing. There were several commentaries included I did not have. I also purchased the Anchor-Yale Dictionary and the ESV Study Bible Notes, which were available at reduced pricing if you bought the upgrade.
I really like the Thematic Outline feature. We use a quarterly study, and I have yet to fail to find an outline which dovetails with the lesson. The outlines bring more references to my lesson, and it also gives the participants more material to study if they choose to.
All in all, I have found L5 to be much easier to use than L4, and I think you would really benefit from the cross grade if you choose not to add resources.

Jerry,
We have a lot in common. I have been teaching a SS class for over 40 yrs. I began using Logos 3 with the Bible Study Library. While attending Camp Logos, I upgraded to L3 Gold. I upgraded to L4 Platinum when it became available. The original L4 Platinum pkg was one of the greatest values Logos ever offered.
I waited a week before upgrading to L5 Platinum after it was introduced. I knew that I wanted to get all the features of L5. That was before the details of the Minimal Crossgrade were announced. It was a close call, but there was enough new material in the Platinum pkg that justified the additional expense for me to upgrade. It cost me about $1 for each additional title I gained in the upgrade.
I would highly recommend at least the Min Crossgrade to anyone now using L4. I love all the new features and use them weekly.
Be sure to check out the additional great values on some of Logos' bestselling resources available to those who are upgrading on the CUSTOMIZE button.
What is the difference between the crossgrade versus the free upgrade? What is a crossgrade?
Thanks,
Andy

The free upgrade refers to the change from L4 to L5 while the crossgrade is not free and refers to additional capabilities and some new resources to enable the new capabilities.
