L5 slow to load commentaries.

Hi folks. New to L5 here. I just upgraded to Scholar's Silver yesterday, 12/28/2012.
On both of my Macs I find that clicking on a commentary in the passage guide results in a very long (45-50 seconds) load time. It shows it in the pane where I have my commentaries, then I get the spinning wheel for a while.
This was a problem in L4, but not one that was as pronounced as it is in L5. I do have older machines. One has 2G RAM and the other 4G. That being said, both are within the range of resources needed.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

I neglected to mention that , should I tab to another program then tab back to L5, it will not respond at all while loading a commentary. I must then force quit and start the program again.

To be honest, the frustration is building, because I have tried to load just three commentaries in the pane where I often loaded 6 or more in L4, and I find that that program simply hangs and is totally unusable.
I have no idea how to proceed, but I need a fix for sure.

The log shows that Macarthur Study Bible loaded in good time but the log ends 41s later after a lot of sync activity. I would need another log after opening at least two commentaries.

Dave,
Thanks. You are correct about the sync activity. As I stated earlier, it loaded the commentary and then I got the spinning wheel for much longer.
Is it possible to do some adjusting of the syncing so that it will speed me up a little?
Thanks again.
It seems that the problem is better this morning, but I don't know why.
Here is a new log.

Try turning off Popular Highlights for the commentaries and see if this helps. It looks like Logos is taking several seconds to download them. If you have a slow computer or slow Internet, I would turn off Popular Highlights for all resources and then turn them on only for a particular resource when you really want it.
After Logos starts, go to one of your commentaries and click on Visual Filters. Then right click (Control-Click on a Mac) on Popular Highlights and select Do Not Show in Any resource. Then restart Logos.

If, in fact, popular highlights are Internet traffic bound then that is yet another reason why they are not a 'good idea'. Really things like this should have a default setting of 'Disabled', and if people turn it on they should be warned about potential performance issues.

Harry,
That did make a significant difference.
I thank you very much!

Well, I thought that had done the trick, but it didn't.
The problem continues.
I note that the log shows it is sometimes still trying to get popular highlights, though they are turned off for the whole of the program per Harry's advice.

Hmmmm...I just noticed that I have kept on trying this with the next commentary in line, which is the MacArthur Study Bible.
Trying others at random I find that they load in about five seconds.
Is there a way to delete that particular resource and download it again? Perhaps it is corrupt.

Found the file to delete. Downloaded it from server via updates, but that did not fix the problem.
FYI, I have emailed support. I will post the answer for the benefit of anyone else who may have a similar problem.

I'm afraid this will continue to happen, as it does with Community Notes, until Logos give us accessible options (in Tools > Program Settings) to turn OFF community features

Dave brings up an excellent point. Some commentaries also have Community Notes. You should also turn these off for all books for fasted program start times.

Would I have to go through each one to determine which did and which did not have Community notes?
Thanks for the input.0 -

Thanks for the input. It operates the same way as Popular Highlighting i.e. first find a resource! When you find one it also lacks the ability to inform you whether it is OFF for the resource only or for ALL resources, so you click the latter and hope that does it.

I deleted my indices so that it would index again. It took much longer than it initially did.
The problem with MacArthur Study Bible remains, but other commentaries load in 5-10 seconds.
Not sure what's up.

Interesting.
I opened a commentary, tabbed over to my browser, then went back to L5. The program had ceased to respond.
I then force closed the program, looked at the logs, and I saw much sync activity that wasn't working correctly; though I couldn't pinpoint what was trying to sync.
When I restarted the program it began downloading updates.
It remains to be seen.
In the meantime, I'm waiting to hear from support. I know they're busy, so maybe I'll hear something tomorrow.

After doing right click on Popular Highlights and selecting Do Not Show in Any resource, is there any way to turn Popular Highlights back on? It seems to disappear as an option when click on Visual filters.

You should still see the option under Visual Filters, but it will be deselected. I turned off Popular Highlights for all resources and I just check the box if I want it for a particular resource. This should make loading and browsing a resource more responsive.
Some resources do not have the Popular Highlights option, because the information is not being collated by Logos. I note that some commentaries have the optiojn and others do not.

Interestingly enough, my main problem is still with MacArthur Study Bible.
I set the update channel to beta and I now have a faster program.
I haven't had time to call tech support. Between flu, laryngitis for four weeks, and simply being busy with the ministry, I've done most of my studying on my Ipad while in my recliner instead of calling.
Perhaps I can call this next week and find a solution.
At least the beta helped.
