Question - Upgrade from Logos v4 Platinum package to Logos v5
Hi, I'm thinking to upgrade from my current Logos v4 Platinum package to Logos v5.
Question: If I only upgrade to Silver package of Logos v5:
1. will I lose any my current book/collections in my Platinum package? Because It seems like I'm down grade my Logos software (from Platinum to Silver), not 'upgrade'; also Logos server always control/synchronize my Logos software.
2. Will I still have all feature of v5 ? (ie. Sermon starter, Timeline, Clause Search....)]
Thanks!
Andrew

No. You never lose a resource, once you purchase it from Logos. You should not consider this a downgrade, as you don't lose anything you have already. Most feel it was a mistake for Logos to use the same names for completely new packages, but that's a whole other discussion.

Looking at this page and comparing. It looks like the only new data set you don't get with Silver is the Bible Sense Lexicon. Everything else seems to be included. (Of course, there a number of resources higher base packages have too.)

Many have upgraded to L5 Silver and then were able to get the Bible Sense Lexicon by upgrading to Minimal Crossgrade for about $7.

Thanks for the clarification in these posts. As someone who upgraded to v4 Portfolio literally a week prior to the v5 rollout, I'm slightly less irritated after reading this.

Depending on the changes in the different packages and your preferences you may benefited by getting some resources in L4 that are not available in L5.
I also had L4 Platinum and upgraded to L5 Silver, then purchased the Minimal Crossgrade to get the Bible Sense Lexicon.

Have you found the upgrade to Logos v5 to be useful? Seems like an expensive way to go and I worry about future versions draining my ministry funds. Let me know.

Hi Mike
If you're asking about the L5 engine itself, you'll be able to download that for free in the coming weeks. So that shouldn't be an issue for you.
Regarding the crossgrade (eg datasets as they call them), I find the 'roots' section of the Bible Word Study to be VERY useful. Right now they don't quite have all the mousing hooks plugged in yet but they will likely do so in coming updates within L5.x
The 'sense' dataset I'm not really comfortable with since it reflects modern linguistics and not how a hebrew or 1st century greek would 'hook things up'. So I haven't missed it (doesn't work right now on my L5).
The tie-ins to the timelines, and referrent datasets can be accidentally useful. When you're looking for something Jesus said, it catches the 'he' for you without the 'Jesus'. Ditto Paul, etc. That might be very useful for your sermon prep.

I was also a L4 Platinim owner and I did not go with a package but rather up/cross/side graded, whatever you want to call it, to L5 engine with the datasets. I really didn't see the value in the additional resources, for me, but I did want new features particularly the root feature. Doing that you get all the functionality of L5 at the minimal investment. If on the other hand you want the new resources in a base package, that would be the way to go.
The way I understand things is that at some point, you can download the L5 engine for free however a lot of the functionality depends on the datasets that drive a number of features and those datasets are not free. You can or could when I did it, buy a upgrade that includes the L5 engine and all the datasets. The base packages contain the L5 engine and depending on the package some or all the datasets plus a number of new resources. Either way though all your old resources will still be there so you've lost nothing.
Hope that helps.

I've been suspecting this, thanks for confirming this DMB:

The crossgrade cost me $159.95 and my Logos person added 3 months more to my payment plan. I was going to be done with the scholar edition Logos 4 in March. Now with the Logos 5 min crossgrade it will be in June.
I could not see myself paying off old software. I want to have the latest engine. So adding 3 month on which actually lower my payment by $2 a month less then I was paying was worth it to me. I thought they would talk me in to buying the Platinum which I didn't want to.
Since I don't really use what I have I didn't feel the need to buy a new upgrade package. $160 is high for the engine and I am not sure what I got but, at least it is updated.

Andrew,
You will NOT lose anything. Richard DeRuiter is right. I went through this a few months ago and got some bad information from a Logos rep and was a little ticked. I thought I was paying for books again that I had already paid a few thousand for so it was a bit confusing. I finall spoke to a gentlement at Logos who was VERY helpful and explianed in detial that the New Packages are not the same even though the names are the same. I upgraded to 5 and I Love IT! So it really is not a downgrade by any means.
Logos probably could have marketed this product better if they change the names to avoid the confusion that it produced and boy was there confusion . But inspite of that it really is an AWESOME product and you will not regret it.

Thanks! I've 'upgraded' to Logos 5 already. L5 is really good. Fast and Reliable.

I did first upgrade from L4 platinum to the minimal cross grade, and later to L5 Gold. The new outlay of the homepage needed some getting used to, but like with the change from libronix to L4 that will soon be done. My question for you lot is, has any of you who upgraded to L5 gold the same problem that the Apostolic Fathers in English reverse interlinear didn't function? It appears on the home page in the list of new resources after the upgrade, but unlike all the other resources which are in blue and can immediately from there be accessed, it is in solid black. When I opened the Apostolic Fathers in English, there was no button for showing the interlinear. Any idea how to fix this?

The reverse interlinear can't be opened directly (that's why it's black, not blue) and can only be accessed through the English text.
As to why you don't see it in the English text, my guess would be that indexing hasn't yet finished, or did not complete. First, make sure that you are opening the correct Apostolic Fathers. On the title page, you should see "Rick Brannan, General Editor."If you click the information button, the support info should be as follows: LLS:APFTHTEXT
2012-10-12T17:52:34Z
APFTHTEXT.logos4
RVI:APFTHRI
2012-10-11T22:24:59Z
APFTHRI.lbsrviIf one of the version numbers doesn't look right, use the update resources command to download the latest version(s), then let indexing complete before opening the Apostolic Fathers resource.
If you have the correct resource, your version numbers correspond to mine, and indexing is finished, then you may need to rebuild your library index with the rebuild library index command. Let the indexing complete before opening the resource.
Both of these commands can take a long time to complete.
If none of that works report back.

Where did it open to? If it was the beginning, try these simple things before you do anything really troublesome like a reindex:
- Scroll past the title page and intro into the actual text (or use the TOC). See if the button appears.
- If it doesn't, close the resource, while still in the actual text, and then reopen it. Does the button appear then?
If 1 doesn't work, but 2 does, please let me know, so that I can inform Logos that an old bug has reappeared.

I hope you did that by speaking to a sales rep and 'returning' the MC before you bought Gold. If you just added Gold on top of the MC you payed more than necessary and could ask for a refund.

That was very helpful, I opened it again today and scrolled down to the text and the buttons did appear now, so probably the indexing hadn't finished when I first started to open it.
Thanks for answering my question in such a clear and helpful way.

Thanks for mentioning this, I have mailed this advice to the sales rep who did both upgrades for me, so hopefully I will see some refund on the purchases. I do appreciate your thoughtfulness in this, as both upgrades were expensive, and my church doesn't give an alowance for books so it has to come out of my own meagre pocket.
