Can we get an "x" in each article on the main page? When pre-pubs and other things are shown on our main page it would be nice if we could eliminate them after we have seen them for days and are not interested in a particular work or article. Keeping them running for days on our main page without an option of eliminating them can be time consuming etc.

No, please don't do that. It's already there. Twice. Vote for create feature whereby user can click to X an article on homepage when they've finished reading it instead.
Though personally I've never seen the need. By day two, most items tend to be on page 2 or 3, where I don't see them anyway.
