Pros and Cons of Multiple Digital Formats

This post is in response to the following comment by Donovan in this thread - http://community.logos.com/forums/t/70021.aspx?PageIndex=2 which I quoted below. I wanted to begin a new thread because my thoughts may have taken the discussion in a different direction.

I'm increasingly open to having it in another digital format particularly if the cost is high.

I have been purposefully avoiding making the jump to using any other digital formats other than Logos because that is definitely my preferred format but maybe I've just not thought things through enough.

My question is this. Who purposefully uses multiple digital formats alongside Logos? What do you see and the pros and cons to this approach?

The only bible program I use is Logos. I have a few others but never use them. But I do have books in PDF and Kindle. The reason for having books in PDF has to do with them being unavailable in Logos or because I own the physical book. I scan my physical books into PDF. Again I have books in Kindle because they are not available in Logos.

I'm not quoted often, but since I am, I'll paint a bit more color. I think in an ideal world everything would be standardised. Around the world we would all use the same video format, drive on the same side of the road, use the same voltage, etc. etc. The digital world in my view is similar.

If you can stay on Logos 100%, there definite benefits, particularly for what I would deem reference materials because of the linking and searching. For some it will be easier for some to consolidate all of their digital resources into Logos because of their needs.

However, there are materials that will probably never be on Logos. Academic journals for example. There are some in Logos, but it is far from comprehensive. Scans of sections of books out of print. Certain types of monographs and books, particularly if they are not directly Christian. Web articles, PDFs and clippings. etc. etc. They will never be on Logos.

My point in another thread is that at least for me, on some materials, particularly monographs, I am finding myself being more and more diversified. This wasn't my plan and at least this was initially by necessity because Logos doesn't sell everything I need, but this changed as I got used to it. Now if there is a book that I want to read and there isn't a glaring need for it to be searchable and linkable as reference material, I have to ask myself if it is worth the return on investment to pay a premium to have it tagged in Logos. Some will analyse their needs and say yes. I'm say no less and less, particularly if the item in question cannot be had at a competitive price in Logos.

The key issue in my view is developing good work flows and rationale for how you use your digital tools. How do you use a browser for that digital domain? How do you use Logos for that digital domain? How do you use another e-plaform for books that digital domain? I'd suggest for those that need to work in multiple domains, there are ways to work if you understand the strengths and potential of each, plus know how to bring them together.

At least in my view, this is similar to other discussions about hoping that one day that the Logos notes editor can handle every kind of material in a bucket list that you would ever want to put into it.

For me, I am exclusively Logos, with the exception of some PDFs that I have converted to PBB. I have only been disappointed in Logos' handling of the TJL's and thus have accessed them via their website. I don't see that as a pattern, however, in their bringing in of new material. Still, it is concerning how they have lagged behind.

As for having multiple digital, IMO the more you have, the less useful the total becomes. The power behind logos is being able to search and index everything. Having multiple sources of information is no different than paper books, with the possible exception that each program has its own search feature, maybe. I'm sticking with Logos. With some $5K and 10+ years already invested in it, it would have to take something very radical for me to switch.

To me, the most useful benefit to Logos is the having a unified library, and having books which "interconnect" through tagging. I do purchase Kindle resources, but generally only when they are MUCH cheaper... so cheap that if the Logos edition popped up on a sale I would consider getting it.

Let me give you an example of a book I purchased on Kindle... I wanted to get Thomas Oden's Systematic Theology. It is nearly $50 in LOGOS. It is currently about $22 on Amazon. To be honest, I probably would not pick up the Kindle version for that price... At some point, I will be able to pick up the Logos edition at a discount... HOWEVER... Amazon is willing and able to have "lost leaders" (the "gimmick" where a company loses money on one product, to create "brand loyalty" and/or to entice people to make other purchases where the company will make money). I picked up the volume on Amazon for $3.78! At that price, I am able to have my cake and eat it too... If/When I see the Logos edition at a more affordable amount, I will pick it up.

I would definitely prefer to have my resources in Logos Format, and have tried hard to do so. I have spent over $10,000 on Logos resources.

However, I do now use Kindle and epub and pdf resources for the same reasons that others do. Many resources are just not available in Logos. C. S. Lewis' works are just one example. I have bought them in other formats. (I would definitely love to have C. S. Lewis and some other of these resources available in Logos.)

Then there is the cost issue. It is worth paying some more to have reference works in Logos. I will pay a bit more to have my commentaries linked to Biblical texts in Logos. I will pay more to have lexicons and other language tools linked to the texts. I will pay more to have my Bible dictionaries linked. I will pay more to have Wesley's Works and Spurgeon's sermons searchable in Logos.

But there is a limit to how much more I will pay. After all, one generally opens a commentary to the passage that one is studying. That is not difficult. It is not like you need to search it. They can do okay in another format, though Logos is preferred.

And if it is a book that I am just going to read, well, the Kindle, iBook, and Nook readers are a better reading experience on my iPad than the Logos app. I suspect that, with all that the Logos app does, it sometimes taxes the iPad's limits. Of course, the Logos app is good, but not the best reader out there by far.

So I will pay a little bit more to have any book in Logos, but not very much more anymore. That is a big shift in my electronic library philosophy.

We are all different, and have different budgets for our resources. Some of us will be 100% Logos resources, and some of us will blend our library resources according to our needs and budgets. I am moving toward the blended library philosophy after over 16 years of trying to buy only Logos.

I have no interest in switching between multiple programs to do my study.

Currently I own a grand total four Christian books on Kindle. Two are commentaries on Revelation that were not available in Logos and I specifically needed (although one is now on prepub). The other two were free on Kindle for a short time. I have converted these to Logos Personal Books using Calibre, although that hasn't been entirely satisfactory (and in one case didn't work at all). Unfortunately the book that didn't work is one of the most helpful shorter commentaries on the book, so I am forced to use the Kindle reader for this one book, just like I would use excellent printed books if I had to.

But if that book becomes available in Logos, I'd buy it immediately, even if I had to pay full retail price (because it's that good). What I won't do, is to buy average quality or unknown books at a higher price - the less confidence I have in a resource, the more of a discount I must have to buy it.

If a book I must have is not in Logos, I will either buy the printed edition (which at least I can sell later on), or buy the Kindle edition (if it's importable into Logos). I won't buy any other electronic edition, because it has no resale value.

Galaxie is the one calling the shots here, this is a 3rd Party Product, outside of Logos's control

I prefer the following resources in Logos because of integration:
Bibles w/ Reverse Interlinear (mapped to original languages)
Commentaries (Linked to Bible passage)
Systematics (can search by verse)
Bible Dictionaries and Encyclopedias (indexed by entry)
Lexicons (linked to text)

Others are mixed or prefer outside Logos:
Most Bibles (not a great selection, especially of foreign Bibles, and almost all are available for free on the web)
Books to read straight through, not search (I prefer Kindle or hardcopy because e-ink or print is easier on the eyes)
Grammars (there is good integration, but right now I still find I use the print copies even when I have them in Logos)

And, of course, some Logos resources I would prefer in Logos that are more expensive, and sometimes SEVERAL TIMES more expensive:
NIV Application Commentary -- $870.86 for 40 volumes, but individual volumes are less than $5 in Kindle or ePUB format at several retailers
Welwyn Commentary Series -- $699.95 on Logos, but can be had for $149.95 elsewhere
Public domain works -- books that cost hundreds on Logos can be found for free, and can be searched by web searches or other Bible software
Commentary series that aren't broken up (Anchor, NICOT/NICNT) -- you might just need a few, but have to pay for several dozen!

Can't say there's much reason to have multiple platforms, Bruce! I've also noticed good points why everything in Logos should be preferred.

My only reason to get Accordance, was that I was discussing the UBS Translator's Handbook New Testament and someone suddenly sent me a private message and offered it to me cheap used in Accordance. Including the license transfer fee it would have cost almost 4 times more in Logos. There will however be additional costs for it (occasional updates of the software, I will certainly not update when each new version comes). So, if the seller wouldn't have seemed reliable (he is easily found on both Logos and Accordance forums) or the price wouldn't have been that low, I wouldn't have bought any Accordance at all. Out of the books that I don't have as printed matter and that are not in Logos, I got the New English Translation of the Septuagint in Accordance, and it seems unlikely it will come in Logos anytime in the next few years since Logos naturally wants to promote their own translation. And I think Logos' translation must be inferior.

I don't see much point in buying Kindle items or in googleying all that many things. I don't have internet, that's one thing, internet would be really expensive here even though these are densely populated quarters, plus if You have a smartphone or internet or a TV or a computer You have to pay a TV-license fee. Well I'm not interested in TV at all, never had TV in my own home, and I hide my laptops so I'm not going to pay that. I rather save 100% and not buy the book at all, than to have it in Kindle. Another reason is that I don't want to support Amazon (except for buying some of my printed matter). A book not being searchable, such as Kindle, is distasteful. If I buy printed matter, with few exceptions (such as a Jn commentary I bought Gospel of John: NT Wright? favorite commentaries?) I want a good index and good organization of the material in the printed book. Printed matter is several times more valuable than Kindle, it can be read faster and carried around in the public transport in a manner that a laptop can't.

I often read through books, but I want to look up things a long time after that, by vaguely remembering and performing a search or looking up in an index or under the headings.

It's also much easier to remember what I have as printed matter, than if I would have for example Kindle. The first digital thing I bought was Logos, but I remember a long time ago, not that long after that, when I bought a novel in some digital format. At that time I had no computer. So I didn't install it. I've lost the email address since a while ago, and I don't even remember the title, the author or the site where I bought, only what the theme was. I've lost my Amazon login once. So I'm afraid that I can't rely on Amazon - their phone support doesn't seem all that valuable, I was not able to get my password since I had lost the email address. That was not a loss, it was refreshing having to make a new Amazon account, just that now I know that loosing the login that way would probably make Kindle books disappear too. Now I do have a reliable email address, but Amazon has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Learning several Bible study softwares is a waste of time if You don't need and will use them. Fortunately we had Accordance training seminars over here in April 2013. Multiple Bible study softwares is also a waste of money. There are substantial costs for maintaining multiple softwares. I know I won't need to pay more than necessary to Logos: I have the functionality that I desired with Bronze and won't be buying any minimal crossgrades, probably ever.

Reading Kindle books is a waste of time. It's faster to read printed matter. And in the cold climate over here, I don't want superfluous readers, especially not ones that suspiciously look like smartphones that I would have to explain and risk having to pay a TV-license. Readers, cellular phones and iPads develop so fast - I don't have any time whatsoever for keeping up-to-date about the technology, and I doubt speed (for Logos and/or Accordance) and batteries can be easily and cheaply crammed in a small light weight package. I don't want touch-monitors, they wear out and I know that the findings of the rare metal used in them won't last forever, so prices may go up in the future and a long time from now we may even run out of the metal.

If a Kindle book is really cheap is probably also worthless and I save 100% of my time by never buying it in Kindle nor any other format.

I think my printed matter will last. I have a nice bookshelf. And I have two safes, one of which is new and fire-proof. I've learned not to loose books. And I've amazed by not having needed to clutter them with notes and highlightings YET but I probably will when doing heavy studying. Only thing that's out of shape is my Mt 1:18-17:6. The binding of a couple of books has cracked but I'll get around and fix that. I have plenty of good quality tape. I also often put adhesive plastic.

Though I presently supplement Logos with BW9 (IMO faster and more accurate in the languages and thus see a current need for two programs), IMO L5 is the Bible program to beat - if that is possible. Some other software companies do some things better in particular areas and faster, but Logos stands behind its ever expanding product. While ultimately they may need to build a completely different 'engine' to maximize the speed and usage of Logos, I have no doubt they will do so beyond what we may even imagine. Price is one point, speed is another, functionality offline is another. Sometimes loo even the work itself. right now there are some people deciding on whether they want to purchase New Interpreter's resources (Dictionary Study bible and one volume commentary) in a half off price set, The price being offered is I think about half of Logos pre pub price for the dictionary. I had advised it was a very good program on the iPhone/iPad but was fairly bare bones on the computer side… As well as a lack of citation capacity like we have in Logos or even others. Another company Iknow has a lock on the Complete biblical library for several years, and having seen people wanting it all one can do is point them there..although that company only has a very poor IPad app for mobile. It is very nice to have things integrated into one software but I personally have no issues switching back and forth in apps...

I bought a few Kindle books at first just for reading, nothing I ever expected Logos would ever sell. For a few years I was able to keep a distinction between my Kindle books and my Logos books. I would never buy any theology books in Kindle.

But then I gradually relaxed my criteria and would buy a book if I really needed it and it wasn't available in Logos yet and I couldn't wait for them to maybe produce it someday.

With the ease of purchasing Kindle books, however, my definition of "really need" has been getting very generous indeed. So I now have 92 books in Kindle that ideally I would have preferred to have in Logos, because they categorize better with my Logos categories.

The Kindle app for Windows is lousy as a research platform. It cannot do a search across your whole library.

I realize that this is an older thread, but I wanted to point out that there is a valid reason to run other software if one has made investments in them before coming to Logos. I keep Pradis, Wordsearch, Quickverse and PC Study Bible running on my machines because I have many expensive resources that I simply don't plan on buying in Logos (for lack of regular use) or have been too expensive to justify. For example, I have the College Press NIV commentaries, Life Application Bible Commentaries, Expositor's Bible Commentary, MacArthur commentaries, and the NIVAC NT/OT Prophets in other formats. Of these, I'm only tempted to purchase the NIVAC in Logos. As infrequently as I reference the others, it just seems to me that I'd be better off buying new titles in Logos that I'd use more often. The slight pain of not having the resources in Logos isn't enough to make me spend my limited funds on duplicating something I rarely use.

Since this thread popped up (I was formerly on forum-sabbatical), my new PageWhite (PaperWhite? ... a Kindle) has caused me to completely change my book purchasing patterns, and it's quite obvious on my credit card.

- If a new Logos resource is Logos4/5 only, then it has to be something I 'need' (e.g. Dictionary of Classical Hebrew, Targum Dicitonary, etc).

- If an existing Logos resource also is in Libronix format, and it's in my area of interest, then I'll purchase it (e.g. 2nd Temple, etc)

- That leaves the other 99% of my reading. Presently I have 4 Kindle Bible-related books I'm reading. Cost: $50 or so. Logos: $200 (largely due to being forced into combos that I don't need).

Maybe for users that need a 'library' for routine use (e.g. pastors, etc), a Logos-only world may make sense. But Amazon's expanded emphasis on book hardware combined with the new sales tax rules is going to up the competitive world of publishing even further. That and Accordance also moving to multiplatform support.

Actually the Logos store is so good for finding new books, that I rarely put the effort needed into finding books as printed matter, but I do keep buying printed matter from time to time, just usually not a whole lot. My A-company purchases are in a standstill, but I might purchases the UBS Translator's Handbook NT for a friend with family licensing and the version 11 Starter Collection.

Denise, what Collection version do You have in the A-company software (if any yet)?

Unix ... none yet. But I have my greedy eye on the mapping resources. Plus some other odds and ends.

If Logos would clean up their mapping tool I'd probably forego A-company. I'm a mapping girl. Maps do much to explain history.
