Befriending the Suttas: Tips on Reading the Suttas

The "Big Three" Suttas (Basics of Buddhist Teaching)

  • Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion
  • The Discourse on the Not-self Characteristic
  • The Fire Sermon

Other Important Suttas:

  • The Anapanasati Sutta; (the Buddha's basic instruction on meditation breathing)
  • The Maha-satipatthana Sutta (the Buddha's basic instruction on mindfulness)
  • The Devadaha Sutta Ven (How to introduce the Buddha's teachings to inquirers.)
  • The Kalama Sutta (How to decide which spiritual paths are worth following and which are not)
  • The Sigalovada Sutta ("a concise 'instruction manual' that shows how laypeople can live happy and fulfilling lives")
  • Karaniya Metta Sutta: Good Will (How to cultivate a heart of lovingkindness)
  • Ambalatthika-rahulovada Sutta  (Instructions to the Buddha's 7 year old son Rahula)

I have also attached my generic picture of Buddha so I can quickly identify them in my library.

As I have said before in previous eastern religion uploads, these are not for everyone, but I teach eastern religions and put these in docx format for my own study & research. I share them with all who are interested, but of course doctrinally they do not jive with Christian faith.

Study them and know them and evangelize them.

May the LORD preserve your faith in order not to go idol worshipping.

Buddhists lack revelation and hence say little about god as they consider such to be beyond what man can find by his own intellect. Not hard to preserve one's faith. In fact read the Buddhist scholar's Unexpected Way: On Converting from Buddhism to Catholicism by Williams, Paul

It is by faith we know that the entire world was made by God’s command so what we see was made by somewhat that cannot be seen

I cleaned this file up quite a bit, made it all one doc, and formatted it to so the navigator menu would work.
