Please raise Your bids for the Encyclopedia Britannica (32 vols.) in order for it to some day make it into production!

See NB.Mick's review for a reason: "Our libraries are full of books that come from the era where this edition of EB was the latest and greatest scholarship. In other words: For better or worse, what the authors of that day had in mind when they reflected on animals, plants, ancient cultures, geographical locations, cultural aspects etc (or worse: just used a word without reflecting on it) will probably be more along the lines of an EB entry than current-day's wikipedia article."

Currently stalled at 5½%, it has been on CP since July 1. 2013.

Sorry but I can't see paying that much for an Encyclopedia that as published in 1911. That is way out of date for a scientific resources.

I don't think Unix was suggesting we buy it for scientific reference but more for sociological reference. We could ask ourselves why buy a background commentary when post-modern Christianity has little to do with the original intent of the authors. [6]

Well, there ARE a lot of older dictionary/encyclopedia type resources available for bidding but they're not going anywhere. Reading Sacred Bridge, one I'd like to see hooked to the Logos mapping would be Eusebius's geographic book of Palestine. Even Jerome thought it was an excellent volume.

That depends, doesn't it? If you're researching a person who died in 1905, or an event that took place in 1898, a 1911 encyclopedia may well be considerably better than a 2011 one.

I'm a bit lost as to why a 100 year old encyclopedia is worth over $100? Especially with the internet right at hand... I think I remember seeing that one of the major encyclopedia publishers closed up shop recently, even after going digital. Maybe those who are bidding on it can help me understand/convince me?

My thoughts exactly. I have place bids for some old works from CP because my strategy is to resell them afterwards due to my CP price being an awesome deal; plus, I can profit a little bit, but as far as this encyclopedia goes, I wouldn't profit from it at all. $120 is just way too expensive.

I'm not going to pay $100 for it, but I love having general encyclopedias in Logos, especially for the biographical entries. I use the Columbia Encyclopedia all the time (no longer available from Logos), but it's pretty concise and I would love a larger work.

Well, a lot of people think they gotta have everything (i.e. every single book or cooking recipe book) in Logos format...LOL...I say cooking recipe book because in the PBB libronix version, Morris Proctor used to say you could even put your favorite cooking recipe book in PBB format; which I thought was funny, but when I remember I had to pay for my PBB license in Libronix is not so funny anymore; but my consolation price is the fact that Logos now includes a free AND BETTER version of the PBB in Logos 4 and 5 and hopefully it'll stay free forever. [:)]
