To try and prevent rampant speculation over the weekend:

  • Yes, the Upload button was implemented for Windows in Beta 2. Honestly, it snuck in a little early.
  • The Upload button for Mac should be in Beta 3, which is when we will release more info for the feature.
  • We are still testing the functionality of the feature, and I wouldn't expect much out of it until Beta 3.
  • As you discovered, the current upload size limit is 10MB, which may change at some point (but may not).
  • For now: no sharing between users, no mobile devices. The current implementation (which may not be functional until Beta 3) is only to sync PBs between your desktop machines.

I don't know where the book goes!

There is planned to be a separate area added for tracking uploaded Personal Books. You can stop looking for it, it has yet to be implemented. Smile

Now Dylan — I know you were trying to be helpful, but you just ruined the plans for many of us over the weekend. What will we do with all our time if we can't spend it in rampant speculation? Stick out tongue

(thanks for the update. Smile )

If it's only a sync with files limited to 10Mb, why the upload button? Couldn't that just happen automatically?

Maybe there will be reasons we won't want to upload them. For example, if you can't sync all your books, does it make sense to have two approaches to keeping things sync'd, or as in my case, keep using dropbox to share between computers? I happen to have 11 compiled files over 10 MB, so it may not be a full solution for me - without knowing what it will do of course!

You might not want to sync a book every single time it is compiled. (Maybe you want to check that formatting was converted properly first.) You might have limited or expensive bandwidth. You might be working on a test book to try out new PBB syntax. Maybe in the future there'll be a way to share books with other users and you might want to perform some quality control and testing before you upload your most recent edits...

This is exciting news.

Makes a lot of sense, particularly when (self/beta) testing

I learned something new today

I've been blunt-instrument-syncing PBs for some time over my home network, but never thought to look at the file sizes. Out of my 1000* PBs, 34 are over 10MB, which really is a small relative number. One is actually over 100MB (Catholic Encyclopedia as one volume).

*They're not all actual books. Some are long articles or blog posts that I thought were worthwhile or interesting.

Fair enough. But from a UI perspective, I think it would be better to have two buttons: Build book, and Build and Upload. That saves a click for uploaders and costs nothing if you don't want to upload. The only disadvantage would be if you wanted to upload books you've already built, but that's probably only an issue at launch, when you're 'catching up' with non-uploaded books.

Build and Upload

This doesn't help anyone who wants to have a "build, test, upload" workflow; it forces them to rebuild the book they just tested in order to upload it.

You can tell you're a programmer, and I'm a beta user without a stable version in reserve! I know nothing of this 'testing' before use. Using is testing! Stick out tongue

I have observed that if I upload a book when I restart the software there is a download, but it never asks for a restart, and I see no difference in the library.

Went to the stable version, and it downloaded something (again no indexing or restart) and there was no noticeable difference in the library.

It is a PB download but it is aborted because of a server error. As stated above, Beta 3 should provide the functionality that is lacking.

I've noticed what I hope is a bug. I'm in the process of creating a PB, and I uploaded an unfinished book after compiling last night just to play with the new "toy". The problem this morning is that when I update the book with the docx file that I'm still working on, the book in logos will not update to the new file. I think its stuck using the one that was uploaded last night.

Edit: This is most likely a problem on my end. It seems that my skydrive is not syncing. Arg.

Edit 2: Confirmed.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Often I will not want to sync a book PERIOD.. as doing so would breach the agreement I have with the publisher as the files would be held on a 3rd party (logos) server, this could result in lawsuits and fines. Please don't enforce automatic upload/sharing some of us try to keep legal

Oops, I've already busted that one wide open, as I use third party servers as part of my backup strategy.

I would plead for at least 50 MB. I have many resources over 10 and some up to 30 MB. Please, please.

That would be great! I am worried about an implementation that doesn't support a larger majority of files, it seems like it won't be unusual to have sizes over 10 MB. My largest is 39MB, Trapp's Annotations on the Old and New Testaments; it's a Bible Commentary, and it does not seem to have any pictures or anything in it so it is just big.

Thanks!

I don't have any large PB files, but if 10mb is the limit could large files be split into volumes
