Dear all,

I was wondering how to make it such that the bible text isn't always permenantly highlighted every time a word is selected? For example everytime i touch a word it will apply a highlight that then stays afterwards? How can i switch this off so that it no longer does this? I believe i may be "stuck" in highlighting mode and wish to remove it.

Thanks in advance

Hi Nathan

this is happening due to the new "swipe to highlight" feature.

which version of the app are you using? From 4.1.10 upwards this feature can be enabled / disabled in the settings menu

But what you are describing should only happen if you "swipe" on a word. If you press and hold you should get the popup menu with a range of options.

is that not what you are experiencing?

Graham

The new Touch-drag highlighting feature is triggered by long pressing then dragging your finger across book text. In the 4.1.10 version of the app it can be difficult to long press on a word without it turning into a single word highlight. This is especially true if the book text size is decreased, the word being selected is just a few characters, or the particular device has a very sensitive touch screen. We are aware of this issue and are planning on shipping an update next week that delays transforming the selection into a highlight until a better drag threshold has been crossed.

Thanks, Gabe. That sounds like a good way to handle it.

I've experienced the problem noted above, but I've also experienced these other issues when attempting to use the new "swipe to highlight" feature.  Sometimes it works fine, but...

  • Sometimes the original word pressed won't highlight.  When this occurs, swiping forward from the originally selected word will highlight all the desired words after it, and swiping backward from the original word will highlight all the desired words before it, but the original word remains un-highlighted.
  • Sometimes I can't get the highlight feature to activate at all.  In those cases I've tried pressing and swiping before the little boundary markers appear, and I've also waited to swipe until after the boundary markers appear.  But no go.
  • Sometimes when I press on a word, the boundary markers will appear briefly, then disappear almost immediately, even though I've maintained pressure on the highlighted word.  When that happens, I can't get the swipe-to-highlight feature to work either.

One other issue I encountered, occurred when I tapped on a scripture verse link in a commentary.  Instead of providing a pop-up window with the passage, it underlined the link instead, and all subsequent attempts to remove the underline and get the passage to pop-up have failed.  I do know that quick-tapping on a highlight is suppose to bring up the little menu bar with the trash can--I have used that to delete some highlight attempts that didn't go as planned with the swipe-to-highlight feature turned on--but in this particular case, I can't get the menu bar to pop-up and I can't get the scripture passage window for the scripture link to pop-up.  Figure I'll have to fix it from one of my computers.

I love the concept of the feature--in fact I'd been wanting that very thing but had never requested it or seen it requested by others.  But with the various quirks being experienced, I had to turn it off for now.  It's just been too frustrating.  I'm using a Kindle Fire HD--perhaps the finickiness of the feature is device related.  I hope not though, as it's a great feature when it works.

I do really appreciate the new sepia color option for reading, though!  Smile

This sounds like it will be helpful.  Thanks.
