My T68 arrived yesterday. Everything seems to be good except one thing - my T68 does not work with External SD Card.

Question to Daniel M: Do you have External SD card and does your T68 work with it?

I found out, that T68 recognize EXTERNAL SD card (30 GB SANDISK ULTRA Class 10) [Settings --> Storage setting] but does not work with it. If I move installed app (like KINDLE or LOGOS) to SD card it means that the App is moved from memory (max 400 MB) to INTERNAL Sd card (max 2,2 GB).

I do not know how to force the device work with EXTERNAL SD CARD :-/ It is crucial feature for me, beacause ma LOGOS app has 6 GB od data.

Any suggestion appreciated.
Thank you.

P.S. I have also tried to format again my SD Card in PC (FAT 32), but after inserting card to T68 everything is the same :-/

Hi Pavel, I don't have an external SD card yet, will get one today. I'll let you know how I get on with it.

Thanks for answer Daniel.

I have tried two apps designed for moving apps from Android device to SD Card (AppMgrIII and Advanced SD Card) but none of them worked. Both apps do the same as default tool for moving app , i.e. they are able to move app from memory to Internal SD Card, but no choice for selecting external SD Card as destination :-(

I wonder if this article would help:

Hmm, maybe, but in my opinion this solution would be helpfull in case the external SD card is available for OS.

Problem of T68 is in my opinion that there ara three "storages": (1) memory, (2) internal storage (internal SD card) and (3) external strorage (External SD card). But typical Android phone/tablet has only two "storages": (1) internal memory and (2) external SD Card...

So I would expect at least some switch for changing between internal and external SD card, but I did not found anything like this. Nonetheless it seems weird to me if ONYX-BOOX manufacturer provide slot for external SD Card and device had no option to use it....

Hi Pavel,

Well, I've got an SD card and got exactly the same behavior. I've been googling around a bit and apparently this behavior is not unique for the T68. It all depends on the app whether you can move things to the external SD card. I guess Onyx only thinks of books and pdf to store on the external SD, I noticed an option in settings to scan the external SD for books. But an app like Logos Bible app doesn't work that way unfortunately...

I guess we'll have to wait until someone finds a way to root the device, then it should be possible to somehow link the Logos directory to the external SD. I found this article where it was done for another device also produced by Onyx: http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/bible-apps/74-logos-bible-app-on-an-e-ink-device

It's a pity, but I don't need to have my whole library on the reader so I'm still quite happy to be able to read Logos resources on it.

It seems, you are right Daniel. I just tried to copy few .mobi books to external SD card and if I left both checkbox (in Settings - User Preferences --> Only scan books folder on ...) UNCHECKED then these books are available in Library.

Well, let's hope someone root this device one day or ONYX BOOX upgrade their firmware...
I can live with only part of my LOGOS library stored in T68 too, but it would be nice to have all library off line :-)

I noticed two next minor drawbacks:

1) Turning to next page in Kindle and LOGOS left due e-ink technology some residue of previous page visible slightly under text (in built-in app for reading there is possible to change refresh rate, but not for external apps).

2) Device connected via USB cable is not visible in my Windows 8.1 (I can see it in Device Manager but do not see disk in File Explorer). But on my older system with Win XP is everything OK... (Does not tried Win 7 yet).

Connecting T78 to Window 7 via USB is only partially successful: I can see internal SD card as disk but not external SD card in File Explorer.

So the best solution IMHO is to use Win XP or connect SD card directly to PC via card reader (using adapter mikro SD - normal SD).

Thanks so much for posting this. I've been looking at purchasing an e-ink display for Logos for some time. Do you remember how much usable space there was on this device out of the box? Was that "internal storage" fully available at new?

Hallo Mark,

Internal memory
Total: 496 MB
Available on new T68: cca 400 MB

Internal SD Card
Total: 2,27 GB
Available: 2,27 GB (empty, i.e. fully available)

More I use T68 more I am satisfied Smile It is good reader for not only ebook's formats like mobi, epub etc. but also for PDFs. And to my suprise DOC files are also excelently readable!! And of course LOGOS & KINDLE - main reason for me to buy it...

There are minor drawbacks but IMHO nothing fundamental (except that external SD Card is not available for Apps including LOGOS)

P.S. Just installed DROPBOX app an it is fully functioning too.

Hi Pavel, I've got Windows 7 and my pc doesn't recognize the internal nor the external storage, but I should say that I have the same problem with my Nexus 7. My solution for that is using ES File Explorer which enables a WLAN connection, which is perfect for copying files from the PC to the device.

I also noticed some ghost image every now and then in the Bible app, but when you flick back and forth one more time it disappears.

As you say, the device isn't perfect but just like you I am very satisfied with it!

Here is some feedback regarding other apps:

  • I tried to install Quickoffice, Google's office suit, but that didn't work for some reason, I might try another office suit some other time.
  • I installed the Accountable2You app which works fine.

Thanks Pavel. I'm very tempted. What's the battery life like? Nothing like a Kindle, I'm sure. How easy is it to power the device off completely to avoid any power draw. How long does it take to restart when completely switched off?

Hi Mark,

It is very easy to completely power off the device, just hold the power button for 2 seconds and tap shut down button that pops up. To start it back up it takes about 40 seconds.

I've been using the device for 2 days with the front light mostly OFF, WIFI mostly ON and the battery is still on 75%. It is interesting, it seems that the WIFI is switched off when it goes to sleep mode (default after 3 minutes), did you find that as well Pavel? Depending on whether you have WIFI on or use the frontlight my guess is the battery might last about a week. But that's only a guess.

Thanks Daniel for tip - copying e-books to SD Card from PC with ES File explorer (via WiFi) is much easier.

As for WiFi it goes automatically OFF while device is in sleep mode. I think it is for saving energy (if I forgot Wifi ON on my Kindle 3 life span of battery was greatly reduced)

I use T68 extensively many hours a Day, WiFi ON but with front light mostly OFF. After 2 days I was low on battery and have to charge it. Hoping for much better duration of battery while on "normal" using...

Found out that working with stylus (from iPad - the one with rubber tip) is better then with fingers Wink

Just FYI: stylus form Onyx M92 won't work on T68

That Swapps app looks like a great tip, having to go back to the apps screen is a bit annoying.

Thanks Pavel!
