This is a Russian Orthodox monastery - Optina Monastery.

From it comes the new preset reading plan, the Optina "Kellia" Lectionary:

This is a traditional plan for reading the Gospels or the Gospels and Epistles. The addition of Revelation is not traditional. The Slavic Orthodox Church does not read Revelation in its liturgies (or traditionally did not, I haven't rechecked all possibilities). There are several ways it is traditional read:

  • Gospels only, repeating every 4 weeks - do this for many years and I guarantee that you'll be truly steeped in the Gospels
  • Gospels followed by the Epistles every 12 weeks
  • Gospels in parallel with the Epistles - Gospels twice and Epistles once in an 8 week period - probably the most common pattern. It corresponds to the 8-tones (meaningful to the Orthodox)
  • Gospels in parallel with the Epistles plus Revelation - Gospels completed every 4 weeks. Epistles and Revelation completed every 10 weeks. This is the pattern built into Logos and most useful for those of us who are not Slavic Orthodox.

One caution. You should set up the plan to start on a Sunday. When the plan comes to an end, simply repeat again, ideally for the rest of your life.

For those outside the Orthodox or Eastern Rite Catholic tradition, this is a practice that will help you understand how thoroughly familiar they are with New Testament Scripture. I was taught this practice by a Greek Orthodox church historian and am delighted to see it in Logos.

Yes there is an error in the last two weeks of the plan which I have noted in the Orthodox thread.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."
