The collections will only work on Logos 7.15 and above. They don't work on mobile. If you need the compatible version, you can find it here:

I've been asked to suggest some collection rules for sorting commentaries. So, here are rules which will create collections that roughly match what I use personally.

There is some arbitrariness (and no doubt inconsistency) regarding whether commentaries make it into the historical collections, or the expository/intermediate/technical sections. Generally, older sets are unlikely to make it into 'technical', as scholarship has moved on so much, but they're fairly likely to make it into 'expository' as the human heart hasn't changed at all.

The rules cover all the commentary series in every base package between Logos 4 and Logos 7 as well as dozens of other add-on sets (around 4,500 volumes of commentaries from nearly 400 series and more than 2,000 authors). They don't cover all commentaries, especially those not in a series. If you want missing commentaries added, you'll have to tag them yourself, I'm afraid. Just tag them commentary-background, etc., and they'll then be automatically included in the collections.

An easy way to add these to your Logos, is to join the Commentary Collections Faithlife group, then click on the documents tag and copy any you wish. They'll automatically appear in Logos next time you sync. If these rules get updated in the future, you'll need to repeat this operation.

Background Commentaries

Background Commentaries don’t commentate on the overall meaning of a passage, but provide insights from the historical and cultural background wherever that’s appropriate.

type:bible-commentary ({Series "IVP Bible Background Commentary", "Lexham Geographic Commentary", "Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary"}, title:("Has God Not Chosen the Poor?", "Manners and Customs of the Bible", "Background Commentary", "The Political Paul"), {MyTag "commentary-background"})

Expository Commentaries

Typically, expository commentaries will discuss the meaning of the Bible text at a fairly simple level. They’ll be simple to read, with plenty of application and illustrations — a bit like a printed sermon. They’ll be hardly any footnotes, and hardly any Greek and Hebrew (which would be transliterated, if used at all).

type:bible-commentary ({Series "3:16 Bible Commentary Series", "Africa Bible Commentary Series", "An Exposition of Ephesians", "An Exposition on Prayer in the Bible", "Analytical Bible Expositor", "Anglican Association of Biblical Scholars Study Series", "Barnes’ Notes on the Old and New Testaments", "Belief: A Theological Commentary on the Bible", "Boice’s Expositional Commentary", "Cecil Sherman Formations Commentary Series", "Clear Study Series", "Daily Study Bible Series", "David Guzik’s Commentaries on the Bible", "Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works", "Discovering Christ", "Essential Bible Companion Series", "Every Christian’s Library", "Exploring the Bible Commentary", "Expositions of Holy Scripture (MacLaren)", "Expositor’s Bible", "The Expositor’s Bible", "Feasting on the Word", "A Feasting on the Word Commentary", "Focus on the Bible Commentary", "Following God Workbooks", "For Everyone Bible Study Guides", "Gaebelein Selected Works", "Gaebelein’s Gospel of Matthew", "Gleanings (AW Pink)", "God’s Word for You", "Gromacki Expositions", "High Definition Commentary Series", "Holman New Testament Commentary", "Horae Homileticae", "J. Intermediate Commentaries

Typically, intermediate commentaries will discuss the meaning of the Bible text, in a serious but not overly-academic way. If they discuss Greek and Hebrew words, those words will be transliterated, and there will be little grammatical analysis. They may acknowledge different interpretations of a passage, but probably only in footnotes. There may be some application for the contemporary church, but that won’t be a main emphasis.

Technical Commentaries

Typically, technical commentaries will be detailed, fairly academic, and emphasise aspects of language and grammar (often using untransliterated Greek and Hebrew). They’ll frequently discuss several possible interpretations of a passage, weighing the different views. They’ll concentrate almost exclusively on what the text would have meant to the original readers, and won’t be concerned about contemporary application.

Historical Commentaries

These are commentaries written before (roughly) WW2. Exegetical methods have changed significantly since then, but these older commentaries give valuable insights into how the Bible has been interpreted in Church History. There are four bands, that coincide roughly with the post-Enlightenment period (late modern), the period of the Reformation, the Middle Ages and the Early Church. The way the Bible was interpreted changed quite significantly at each of those points, so the split is fairly useful (at least to me).

Historical Commentaries (Antiquity)

Commentaries written prior to the medieval period (i.e. up to the fifth century).

type:bible-commentary ({Series "A Library of Fathers of the Holy Catholic Church", "Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture",  "Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture (Rev.)",  "Ancient Christian Writers", "Early Church Fathers (Catholic Edition)", "Early Church Fathers (Protestant Edition)", "The Church’s Bible", "The Fathers of the Church"}, {Author "Andrew of Caesarea","Asterius Urbanus","Augustine of Hippo","Cassiodorus","Cyril of Alexandria","Didymus the Blind","Dionysius of Rome","Gregory the Great","Jerome","John Chrysostom","Lactantius","Oecumenius","Origen","Theodore of Mopsuestia","Theodoret of Cyrus","Venantius Fortunatus","Victorinus of Pettau"}, title:("The Classic Midrash"), {MyTag "commentary-antiquity"})

Historical Commentaries (Medieval)

Commentaries written in the medieval period (i.e. from the fifth to the fifteenth centuries).

Historical Commentaries (Reformation)

Commentaries written in the period of the Reformation period (i.e. from the sixteenth to the early eighteenth century). Commentaries from both Protestant and Catholic writers are included.

One Volume Commentaries

Commentaries that cover the whole Bible, or at least one Testament, in a single volume.

type:bible-commentary AND ({Series None} ANDNOT(title:"Biblical Encyclopedia and Museum","New Interpreter’s Bible, Volumes I–XII","The Lexham Textual Notes on the Bible","The New Manners and Customs of the Bible") AND ((subject:"Bible—Commentaries" ANDNOT subject:"Bible—Commentaries—Collected works") OR (subject:”Bible. O.T.--Commentaries” AND subject:”Bible. .N.T.--Commentaries”) OR subject:"bible handbooks" OR subject:"bible introductions")) OR {MyTag "commentary-one-volume"}

Study Guide Commentaries

Typically, study guide commentaries will provide short introductions to each passage, and ask several questions of the reader.

type:bible-commentary AND (title:("Bible Study Guide"), {Series "Bryan Williams Bible Study Collection", "Not Your Average Bible Study"}, {MyTag "commentary-study-guide"})

Textual Commentaries

Textual commentaries focus on issues of textual criticism.

type:(bible-commentary, bible-notes) AND (title:("New Testament Text and Translation Commentary", "The Lexham Textual Notes on the Bible", "A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament", "A Textual Guide to the Greek New Testament","The NET Bible First Edition Notes"), {MyTag "commentary-textual"})

Special Commentaries

'Special' commentaries are those that don't fit into any other category. Typically, they won't look at the text as a whole, but focus on a very narrow aspect of the text.

type:bible-commentary ({Series "Biblical and Judaic Studies from the University of California, San Diego", "Biblical Theology of the New Testament", "Intertextual Bible Commentary", "Mekhilta de-Rabbi Ishmael", "Mekhilta de-Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai", "The Mellen Biblical Commentary", "New Studies in Biblical Theology", "Pastorum Series", "Philo & Holy Scripture", "Studies in Biblical Theology"} OR {MyTag "commentary-special"} OR title:("Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament"))

The power of these collections mostly lies in giving you the ability to create a custom passage guide like the one below, which I strongly recommend. That way you can consult different types of commentaries depending on the questions you're asking the text, and were you are in your study. Personally I use technical commentaries first to answer questions of grammar and basic exegesis, before moving to intermediate commentaries for ideas about what to communicate and basic application, and later to expository commentaries to help me think about illustrations and more specific application.

Thanks a lot, Mark! Well done and very useful.

You may want to add the series "Ignatius Catholic Study Bible" in the Intermediate Commentaries section.

The "Historical Commentaries (1750-1950)" incorrectly grabs the following commentaries:

- Explanation of the Apocalypse by Bede

- Catena Aurea

- Commentary on the Gospel According to John by Cyril of Alexandria

- A Commentary on the Psalms from Primitive and Mediaeval Writers, vol. 1-4

- Morals on the Book of Job by Gregory the Great

- many of the volumes from the Early Church Fathers series

- Robert Bellarmine's "A Commentary on the Book of Psalms"

- The Great Commentary of Cornelius à Lapide, vol. 1-8

- ...some may prefer excluding the ICC series here, leaving it only in the Technical section

And, I see that you included Alphonsus Liguori in the Reformation section. He piggybacks that section and this one. If you want to unify where he appears - his "The Divine Office: Explanation of the Psalms and Canticles" (written around 1775) appears in this collection.

Fr Devin Roza:
The "Historical Commentaries (1750-1950)" incorrectly grabs the following commentaries:

This is a known issue. In my original post I said:

Mark Barnes:
The 1750-1950 period tries to use publication dates to increase the number of volumes, but in so doing catches a few earlier commentaries that were republished at that time. You can either remove the dates from the filter, or add the other historical collections into the "minus these resources" section.

(I added this about five minutes after I originally posted, so you may have missed it. I'll move it to a more prominent location.)

Hi

The following don't seem to be included. They SEEM to be classed as commentaries by logos but some seem a bit unconventional perhaps?.

Wesleyan Bible Commentary
The New Daily Study Bible
Not Your Average Bible Study Series
The Jon Courson Essential Bible Study Library

Thanks Mark - this is a huge blessing. Might I suggest making a faithlife group - then people can click and download the rules automatically. I can set it up if you like and make you the administrator. (or whatever you'd prefer).

Thanks from me also. I've been wanting something like this for some time.

For your information, here are the numbers on what was eliminated from my 1750-1950 group as I took away the other groups:

Starting number in 1750-1950 = 1299

less Antiquity = 1287, less Medieval = 1279, less Reformation = 1228, less Intermediate = 1071

less Special = 1069, less technical - 987, less 1vol = 982, less Background = 982

and less expository =829.

So 829 was the final number.

Mark, thank you very much for these time-saving rules!

I do have a question, however:

I am organizing my commentaries a little differently. I have the following categories: Language, Exegetical, Application, non-versified, and Critical.

I assume, that

  • your "Technical commentaries" match my "Language commentaries" collection
  • your "Expository" is my "exegetical"

  • what about your "intermediate," how would you define them?
  • Also, do you mark any of your commentaries as Application?

Taken from my site:

  • Technical Commentaries — Typically, technical commentaries will be detailed, fairly academic, and emphasise aspects of language and grammar (often using untransliterated Greek and Hebrew). They’ll frequently discuss several possible interpretations of a passage, weighing the different views. They’ll concentrate almost exclusively on what the text would have meant to the original readers, and won’t be concerned about contemporary application.
  • Intermediate Commentaries — Typically, intermediate commentaries will discuss the meaning of the Bible text, in a serious but not overly-academic way. If they discuss Greek and Hebrew words, those words will be transliterated, and there will be little grammatical analysis. They may acknowledge different interpretations of a passage, but probably only in footnotes. There may be some application for the contemporary church, but that won’t be a main emphasis.
  • Expository Commentaries — Typically, expository commentaries will discuss the meaning of the Bible text at a fairly simple level. They’ll be simple to read, with plenty of application and illustrations — a bit like a printed sermon. They’ll be hardly any footnotes, and hardly any Greek and Hebrew (which would be transliterated, if used at all).
  • Background Commentaries — Background Commentaries don’t commentate on the overall meaning of a passage, but provide insights from the historical and cultural background wherever that’s appropriate.

I guess my "technical" would line up with your "language" and "critical", and my "expository" with your "application". I'm not sure what "exegetical" could mean in this context, sorry (though I think Morris uses it).

I've now added this section to my original post, to help others.

Mark, I've used the categories described on your site to tag all of my commentaries for a while now. Thanks for taking time to articulate your understanding of the specific distribution of commentaries. I will be cross-referencing your list with mine. You are indeed a blessing to this community.
