BUG: There seems to be a problem in computing dynamic price for crossgrades

I posted this already here in response to another user's complaint, but I think it's really a bug so I wanted to report in in a place it would get seen by the people who need to see it:

The Core Crossgrade's full price (for people who don't own any base package yet at all) is $399.95. I own Portfolio plus a couple of the denominational base packages. The price for me to buy Core Crossgrade was shown as $124.80:

But I have already had all the L6 datasets and most of the media unlocked for me as a beta tester. If I scroll down to the section which shows what's in it and what I own already, and what it would all cost if I buy it all individually, I see that the total is actually only $19.95! (Everything is listed as "Owned" except Proclaim Media, $19.95; and Logos 6 Maps Volume 2, $0.00.)

Maybe the dynamic price total at the top doesn't take into account what you've had unlocked as a pure gift from the company. But it should.

Rosie, what beta testers received was a temporary license to a set of resources for the purpose of beta testing the software. Temporary licenses don't count toward dynamic pricing.

Sounds like the bug is that we're showing that you own things you don't actually own. Ownership is different from access. Thanks for reporting. We'll look into this.

How long do beta users have before the temporary licenses expire? I will likely get around to upgrading sooner or later but it's going to take me some time to wade through the whole list of what would be new to me if I upgraded to Collector's Edition and sum up what I'd pay for the ones I might really want and decide whether the BP upgrade price is worth it to me. I'm not particularly interested in a whole slew of Apologetics books about talking to Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses and refuting Darwin, for example.

It's entirely possible this was spelled out in some sort of terms and conditions post at the very beginning of beta testing, but I don't remember if it was. If it wasn't, I think that's an unfortunate oversight, especially for those (presumably) many of us who expected to be able to keep what we had already been putting to good use, testing, helping to improve, etc.

Kent mentioned temporary licenses for "Ask the Author" stuff--that much was clear, but I don't recall seeing anything about essentially having to give up licenses for everything else.

Or am I missing something?

As I understand it, different people were invited to beta-test in different ways, and at different times. The info Rosie gave may not have applied to you.

Thanks, Mark. But I'm not sure I follow. I see all that Rosie has described, including the dollar amounts she is seeing here, too. Would love clarification from someone at Faithhlife/Logos as to whether temporary licensing was already mentioned to beta testers. If not, it seems in poor form to alert us only afterward.

I've been drafting and negotiating IP license agreements for nearly 20 years and I've never seen a beta license that didn't time out. It is simply the way they work. Sometimes beta testers will be given a license to the release version for free or receive a substantial discount on the release product for their time and effort, but the beta license always terminates. Logos has good attorneys...you can bet that it is in the T&Cs.

(And how are folks still posting in Private Beta forums? I can't--so if an admin wants to move this there, all the better.)

I still do want to register that what Phil wrote in his post above should have been made clearer from the outset to beta testers.

For instance, I've just looked at Dylan Rondeau's "Getting Started with the Logos 6 Beta" thread of FAQs and Nathan Smoyer's "Welcome and Get Started" thread. Lots of info about how beta testers can help Logos--nothing about a temporary license.

There are reasons to beta test besides getting free stuff, and many of us are willing to do that. But it really should have been noted in one of those posts.

And the part about resources showing up as "Owned," when they're really just "temporarily licensed" makes upgrading confusing... even for a beta tester who should know how to upgrade easily!

Faithlife/Logos--please do take note for Logos 7 roll out and consider my comments above.

Although I understand how people feel, the reality is that it is the responsibility of all licensees to read the applicable license agreement, this includes beta testers. If you use software with an install, boxed or click-through license, you are agreeing to legal terms and conditions and it isn't the responsibility of the licensor to make every line item perfectly clear. I realize that people don't actually read license agreement, but they are indeed legally binding and should be taken seriously.
