DATA BUG: Concrete example of effect of missing data

Robert Bigouette posted in another thread his sense of frustration when attempting to find the actual text of the Athanasian Creed. He received several good suggestions but none that was truly direct -- some assumed advanced knowledge of library management/metadata, others would select much about the Creed that need to be screened to find references to the actual texts.

So I thought I'd show a quicker route via Factbook or Topic Guide. The results were not merely disappointing. They were downright embarrassing.

In addition the drop down menu for an everything search approach only shows topic ... which is, of course, exactly what you don't need.

A custom topic guide that has a collection with creeds will find what you are looking for. Topics is going to generally be resources such as dictionaries. The creed in question is found in a monograph. Many older resources are not tagged with headings, but largetext instead. Those will not show up in a custom topic guide with collections added. I agree that some consistency in tagging headings is needed or expand the results for collections to include largetext.

Actually I personally would simply open the Book of Concord without doing any searches ... which you notice is not a resource that pops up in the top searches.[;)] All you need is an Apostolic Lutheran Grandmother and/or ELCA daughter-in-law. [:D]

You are absolutely correct that a many users will have a Creeds & Confessions or Creeds only collection. But for the individual that I initially wish to help, there was no reason to believe that he had such a collection. But I do think it is reasonable for a new and/or low end user to expect to simply have the system find it without steps of setup in advance.

The biggest complaint I get with new users is that they get so much information they are overwhelmed, like taking a drink from a fire hose. The only solution is better library management, either through training or out of the box. I made a suggestion that library base packages should come categorized and those categories would function as collections in all searches and guides. The categories would be what is used to sell base packages. It would let new users start with more custom searches and custom guides without having to learn to build them or tag their entire library. It would move new users along more quickly.

There is advantages to having an open framework and letting users build the way they want, but some need a foundation and framework to start out of the box. There is a step between enter topic and click go on the home page and full power user library management. Sorry if I hijacked your post.

Of course not - it's only foundational to Lutherans who are too polite to complain. (yes, I dare say that only because my German Lutheran daughter-in-law can't believe how polite her Scandinavian congregation is. And I tell her about my Finnish (not Scandinavian) Grandmother).
