Hot Indexing

Is it possible for Logos to Index users' books on their computers and then send the index file to us as a download?

Every time LogosIndexer runs on my computer it runs VERY hot, and is quite frankly a memory hog, and my computer ends up shutting down having not completed the indexing. Am I alone in this?

BTW, I don't believe I am running a sub-standard machine. I have an Acer Aspire 5733 with an Intel Core i3 processor and 6GB DDR3 Memory and a 500 GB HDD.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Ray,

I suggest you try cleaning out the laptop vents with compressed air. Dust build up can be a problem. Many laptops are build with poor heat handling, and based on Google results, that Acer may be one of them. Frankly, a computer should be built to handle full CPU use without overheating, but laptop manufacturers do cut corners. But dust buildup can also defeat any ventilation. You should also make sure that the bottom of the laptop is getting airflow--prop it up on something.

There are many different opinions on how indexing should be done. If it was done on the server then you'd have to download a multi-GB index every time you purchased a book. Those on metered internet really wouldn't like it.

If the issue is venting, perhaps a product called Laptop legs" would help. They flip down and back up as needed. fairly inexpensive and available online at Amazon. They work great on my Acer laptop.

I have observed that when indexing a library the CPU may run at maximum for long periods. As you seem to have experienced this can be too much if the resulting heat is not adequately dissipated.

Consider creating a custom power plan to use when indexing, one which limits the CPU.

If you would like to try this:

Begin by opening the Power Options applet in Windows Control Panel.
Select the option to create a power plan. I would select High performance from the options to start with.
After giving the plan a name click next.
Choose the display and sleep settings. I would choose Never for the sleep setting.
Click Create and your new power plan will be the default.
Click Change plan settings and on the next page click Change advanced power settings.
In the Power Options window Advanced settings scroll down in the list box until you see Processor power management.
Click on the + to expand the options list.
Look for Maximum processor state click on the + to expand the options list. I would enter 85% to begin and adjust up or down based on the result of an attempt to index a library.
Click Apply and then click OK.
Close the Edit Plan Settings window and retry indexing your library. The CPU performance will peak at the percentage of maximum you have set. The system should run cooler.

You can return to using a different power plan when indexing is finished.

Your tip took a bit of tweaking, but in the end it worked. I dropped it to 85% but that last for about a minute and indexed less than 1%. So I dropped it to 50% and it is now at 45% but I cannot use any other program (including virus protection which runs in the background) so I do hope Logos tries to address the memory/disc usage issue of Logosindexer.com. In short my computer is useless for anything else when it runs. Thanks again for the tip.

Ray, it would be small comfort, but when Logos 4 first came out, I had overheating problems all the time and eventually bought a new computer just so I could complete indexing. (Like I said, small comfort.)

You've got a solution, but not an ideal one. Logos exercises my computer like no other program. Its been doing that since Logos 4 came out. I don't know what they can do about it, but I hope for your sake and others' they will take another look at it.

BTW: I bought a quad core i7 and initially only had 4 GB of RAM and that took care of my problem. Both machine were/are Dells.

I'm glad you were able to index your library.

I think the problem in this case is in your laptop. It may be a design flaw, a quirk with the assembly, or simply the result of normal wear and tear. Whatever the cause your CPU is inadequately cooled when operating at the maximum.

If you only have this type of problem when indexing then you may get along fine using the custom power plan.

If you are fortunate to live near a good ful-service computer repair provider then I suggest you get a quote for having the thermal compound an the CPU heatsink replaced and the heatsink fan cleaned.

We had this problem in a laptop, and paid about $60 to get it serviced. Afterwards the fan ran much less frequently, and the laptop was much quicker (the motherboard had been stepping down the CPU speed to try and reduce the heat).

Thanks for this. All I can say is "wow" that's some dirty machine! I'll check with my local shop and send them that link. Hope it solves the problem, but I suspect I'd have to do it multiple times so my eye's on something with better ventilation.

I use a Kensington EasyRiser - much better than the flat things with USB-powered fans.

But that said, and before you go over to the dark side: The indexer doesn't tax the CPU as much (that's something Logos.exe does quite on its own...) but the HD.

I'm running an Acer Extensa machine and upgrading the HD to an SSD worked wonders - I can work while it's indexing, whereas before I waded through molasses to just get to "turn indexer off for 4 hours ". Just anecdotical, but maybe it helps.
