Having some issues with links in the WBC for 1 John telling me I don't own resources I actually do.

There are two editions of the Tyndale Commentary (and the BST) - a US version and a UK version. The link is to the UK version, whilst you presumably own the US version.

It's very frustrating, but I understand there are two editions because of rights issues. That said, I'm sure Logos could implement a workaround if there was a will to do so.

There's a little more info here: https://community.logos.com/forums/t/13493.aspx

Thanks for the notice. I have an idea for a resolution that I'm looking into.

Sound great. Especially if you could apply this idea to other places - the links from Exegetical Summaries to the wrong BST edition come to mind...

Interesting... When I look at Stott's book it shows LLS:TNTC83JNUS but the WBC shows this: LLS:29.67.2 Could the problem be the lack of US at the end of the WBC?

That's what Mark was trying to explain above. For some works, Logos has several editions that don't differ in the text, only in the publisher who gets the royalties. So the software thinks these are different books (and technically they are and you could own both etc.).

The problem is not the lack of US at the end of WBC, but the presence of US at the end of the TNTC.

What's the solution?

What's the solution?

Move across the pond and purchase the UK version. Wink

The point of everything above is this: The link is to a different version of the resource than the one you (and I) have. It won't link to our commentary because it isn't the same commentary. Technically. There isn't a solution, and there probably won't be... unless FL implements some creative fix.

EDIT: I re-read Kyle's comment above. Hopefully FL will come up with something... but don't hold your breath... it could be a while (if ever).

Faithlife doesn't actually have to come up with anything; they already have a fix for essentially the same problem, and they use it for the works of the Church Fathers, which are often available in multiple translations.

Short answer:

The Church Fathers solution won't work here. Or at least it won't work without updating all the references in every book that links to a Tyndale or BST commentary. A better solution (IMO) is simply to intercept links to the US edition and re-route them to the UK edition (and vice versa).

Long answer:

There are two types of links in Logos: I call them datatype links and resource links. Datatype links go to any resource with a matching reference, chosen in priority order. So John 3:16 is a datatype link that will open that resource in your highest prioritised Bible. Resource links go to a specific place in a specific resource. So pg 56 of the Tyndale Commentary on John is a resource link. Logos could have created a special datatype for BST and/or Tyndale commentaries, but that would have been a pain in the neck. And they can't do it now without updating all the links that point to BST/Tyndale.

Here are some link examples:

Yes, that is what I was thinking about.

That would, I think, require some figuring on Faithlife's part. I don't know that they do this with any resources at this point, but maybe they do.

I'm 99% sure that creating new datatypes for BST and Tyndale, then doing a find and replace for links to those resources across thousands of books (some of which third-parties are responsible for) is far more work than some code to treat certain volumes as equivalent.
