Collection of Inerrantists.

edited November 2024 in English Forum

So I made a collection composed of all of the authors of the Chicago Statement, John Piper, David Platt, Carl F. H. Henry, and a handful of others strong on inerrancy.

Worked out to be about 900 titles in my library.

IF you have any authors and can show where they are inerrantists feel free to post.

Likewise I am starting a negative list to subtract from here if you find someone (and can demonstrate) they are weak on inerrancy in a particular way.

Here is the CSBI signers list maintained by DTS.

The document should be posting to my commentary collections FL group momentarily.

Add James Barr to the "not" list. His Scope and Authority of the Bible is a shotgun blast to the belly of some of the tenets of inerrancy.

Fwiw, "inerrancy", as it is advocated by its adherents, is a psychological inference rife with presuppositions. The Bible can be thoroughly true, as YHWH comprehends the concept, and not correspond to the assumptions of inerrancy. As Barr points out, fundamentalists perceive the Bible must be "historically true" to be true (backward looking), when the Book itself asserts its dominance and authority based on its take regarding the future, i.e. on the fact that it is a prophetic book making prophetic claims (forward looking).

Barr is a very "hot and cold" author, so his alternative suggestion (tradition) isn't much better than what he attempts to improve upon, but he makes good on his iconoclastic reputation. He's better at seeing the emperor's new clothes for what they are than he is at sewing his own set of designer threads.

    tenants of inerrancy

You mean tenetsTenants are renters/occupants of a dwelling or land.

If you're talking about inerrancy, it is a good idea to be as inerrant as you possibly can. [:)]

I know you know the difference, it's just one of my pet errors to educate the world about, because it's a common one, so I'm using this opportunity to share the knowledge with everyone else who didn't know.

Perhaps they really are TENANTS of inerrancy in that it is their home base — the most important thing in their mind (what little they have).

I could make a case that I was talking about those theoretical occupants who "dwell" in the conceptual space known as "inerrancy", but that would leave you hanging and I don't want to do that to you. [;)] So I will just say thanks for the edit.

What about some of the guys that have been called out recently by Geisler? Vanhooser and Bock in particular.

Why so much concern about inerrancy?

    Micah 6.8 said:

8 "He has told you, O man, what is good,

And what the Lord requires of you:

    Only to do justice

    And to love goodness,

And to walk modestly with your God

2 Tim 2:15">Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
The KJV which is what I memorized that verse in as a child, says "study" instead. But I think the impetus is clear here.

*chuckle* It was actually Geisler, and his protege (full disclosure, Roach was my former roommate - until he married).

Roach was the one who specifically calls out Vanhooser not only in the book, but from a different angle in his dissertation, and from possibly a third in his forthcoming book.

Probably be easier to have him call you out ;)
