Given Mobile Experience - A Crazy thought..

I appreciate all the Mobile big searches are server side, but that got me thinking, I am privileged to have too many books in my library but only use 15 or 20-70 (depending on commentary set) of my 2000+, 99% of the time I don't care about the other books on my laptop, but wouldn't want them hidden on my PC where I would still like my full library.

Given the mobile experience, at least in theory there must be now be a way of choosing what subset of books we want locally resulting both in a smaller local index and footprint.

Desktop (first search) would be those local books, plus maybe with a new additional section for online titles only results with option to download it and add to local index, or to buy if not owned.

An additional upside would be that seldom used books would always be up-to-date online, and would not require local reindexing when typos were corrected.

OK, I have been playing with this, and may have a temporary UNSUPPORTED answer.

Install Logos 6 on a clean machine

Run setup as normal and enter login details, and as soon as the preparing to download window starts kill your internet connection, and kill the logos6.exe

restart logos and say work offline, be patient it will load logos with 0 books in the library

Turn off Automatic download

Copy the book files you want onto a usb an use the "Scan command"

let it run and index

after index is complete, reconnect to internet

on restart will show synchronise, don't panic, is bringing in your notes and stuff

Here is the caveat, when you restart it will show you how many GB it wants to download

try to resist the urge to click..or you will be back to same problem

As I say it is likely not supported by Logos - use at your own risk, and don't click the download link, or you will be in same situation as you are currently in.

as for updates, haven't worked that out yet, you may need to reinstall new version over the top.. but have not attempted this yet.. so not sure yet on futureproofing, hence the unsupported bit, as for book updates may be impossible..

I have only 78 of 6000+ Books installed on this win 10 tablet, with a 2.5gb footprint as opposed to a full install footprint of 29.1 GB

Your notes etc, should still sync

One idea is changing Use Internet to No (so download link does not appear). When want to sync your documents, then Use Internet = Yes, but avoid clicking download link.

Resource update(s) could be done using USB with scan command, which also provides opportunity to copy more resource(s). When copying to USB, may want to check last modified date in Data \ <Random> \ ResourceManager \ Resources for newer *.lb* files (*.lbspbb are personal books and *.lbxlls are older Libronix formatted books).

Before using scan command, suggest syncing your documents.

Depends.. if it is treating it as a new install may not upgrade databases as it isn't expecting to find any data on a new install.. hopefully they have accounted for this.. only time will tell..

Updating from a LogosSetup link has always worked - it is usually recommended when the standard download update doesn't work.

If this works (which is seems to), will it only be a temporary fix? I.e. What happens the next time there's a database or program update you need, or you want an update for one of the resources you included via your scan, or you purchase a new resource and want to add that to your library. Won't those things just be added to the total mix of the 18.89 GB of updates waiting to be downloaded? [:S]

if its a resource, you can copy it in on a memory stick using the scan resources, program updates are working Ok to-date, see KS4J's link
