The institutes as we now usually read them come from his final revision of 1559, however his previous editions were much smaller and it is interesting to see how the work developed in order to see how his theology developed.

The prepub shipping today comprises of the first edition (1536) and his first french edition (1541). as french was his native langauage his use of french words is very helpful in undertsanding his exact meanings. For instance (by memory) where in latin he refers negatively to the "scholastics" in the French he refers to "the doctors of the Sorbonne" which is a slightly differnt emphasis.

It is usually said that his 1536 edition covered the heart of his theology and in that context it is useful to see what he did and did not cover in that first edition.
