Trying to understand Fuzzy Bible Search
Fuzzy Bible Search has been added to the Everything search in 7.2 Beta 3 - but I'm not quite sure what it is doing.
Searching for faith I get this
It seems strange that in the first three results it has Mk 5:34, Ml 4:40 and 2 Peter 1:5. This suggests it isn't returning results in canonical order. Is this expected?
If I go onto the next set of results I get this
The James 2:19 result is the first one that doesn't have the word "faith" - on what basis is the fuzzy match working?
I first came across this feature when doing a Sense search
Why are these particular fuzzy results returned?
Thanks, Graham

Fuzzy Bible Search is intended to handle the situation where you vaguely remember a Bible verse. Type in the text as best you remember, and the search will display a ranked list (not canonical order) of possible matching verses. Note that the results are displayed with your most preferred Bible, but the best match may have come from some other translation. This will explain why some results seem to rank unusually high.
I wouldn't expect these results to be valuable for single word searches, and they will not work properly with datatype references or other non-text search terms.

Thanks Andrew
Does the fact they won't work properly with datatype references suggest they should be excldied from the results when running those types of searches?

Yes. It's a bug that the Fuzzy Bible Search runs if the there is anything except word or phrase terms in the search.

It should consider OR'd terms, but it gives different results for:
belief, faith ---> Hab 2:4 ok
faith, belief ---> Ps 19:7 ??
whilst:
belief OR faith ---> 171 results
faith OR belief ---> 2 Chron 6:31
and:
belief ---> 297 results
faith ---> 1313 results

belief OR faith should give the same results as belief or faith because there is no support for any operators or terms other than text and phrase. This means that everything is treated as a text term. We will be changing it so that Fuzzy Bible Search only returns results when the query is only composed of text or phrase terms.
Don't place a lot of value on the number of results coming back. I would expect to ever see these add up to anything useful. The search engine doesn't necessarily return all results, but will cap the results when the confidence drops too low.
I'm checking on the difference between belief or faith and faith or belief.

Unfortunately, I most often need a fuzzy search on the church fathers. But I am glad to see this feature added.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

I don't have beta though the introduction of this feature tempts me more than any of the preceding features.
I wonder how fuzzy search behaves towards misquotes of the bible like: "God helps those who helps themselves" or "to err is human, to forgive is divine."

Not particularly helpful, eh. Thanks, Dave and MJ.

Bit puzzled by Fuzzy Bible Search results for:
Lord worry
Was looking for Php 4:5-6 in results. Noticed above and below Php 4:6 are verse ranges.

I don't use the beta yet but I am intrigued. What is the general idea of what determines "confidence"? Also, are results ranked according to that confidence level? Another question that pops out of the comments is what is it that determines whether it is a single verse or a passage that will be returned?

The tool only displays a single milestone for each result. I'm guessing that your preferred Bible doesn't break those passages up into separate milestones.

Uh... magic? [:D] It's a combination of a bunch of different things. I don't have the details, but there are a number of factors that determine confidence. All results are ranked by confidence.

My highest prioritized Bible has individual verse milestones so Matthew 6:25-34 (above) and 1 Peter 5:6-8 (below) Philippians 4:6 is a bit fuzzy. Wuest's New Testament: An Expanded Translation has Matthew 6:25-34, but not 1 Peter 5:6-8 (Wuest has 1 Peter 5:5-14). Also Wuest has Philippians 4:4-7 milestone. Personally not know what Bible has 1 Peter 5:6-8 milestone.

I can duplicate. My preferred Bible is ESV.
Here's a screen shot from the second page of Fuzzy Search results with Mt 6:25–34 and 1 Pe 5:6–8 as individual results:

I was wrong about single milestones. Adjacent milestones can be combined if they all rank highly. In addition, there might be some Bible (that you may or may not own) that has a larger granularity of milestones that provided a very high ranking.
