What is it?

Fuzzy Bible Search is a new feature in the Logos Cloud Feature Set that helps you find that verse you can't quite recall-- or maybe you learned it in another translation, and your current Bible version uses another word. Type in the phrase as best as you remember, and Fuzzy Search will return a list of verses ranked by best match.

Logos Now membership or Logos Cloud (levels Plus and higher) subscription is required.

How does it work?

  1. Open Basic Search set to search Everything, and enter your query.
  2. Fuzzy Search sends your search to an online database. (Internet connection is required.)
  3. The search is run against multiple English translations, and best matches are returned to your search panel.
  4. Results are displayed in your preferred version of the Bible, with the most likely match at the top.

Logos Now membership or Logos Cloud subscription is required.

I assume this means it isn't a local search and also requires an internet connection to Faithlife servers to work?

Was there a reason this couldn't be implemented as a local index search?

Oh, for goodness sakes, Todd.

When I saw the Graham beta query (Graham's pretty logical), I thought to myself 'Oh my.  I hope this is for Now'ers only. And internet only for when L8 appears.'

Then I saw Adam's thread. Whew!!!! Dodged that bullet!  Cludges up the search panel and fake FL.

I tried out the old fuzzy on Libby ... that I think I paid for. It's a misnomer, but I'm happy Logos is keeping it on their server. I'm happy for the loss.

MJ really wanted FL ... I wonder if she likes this.

EDIT:

I assume they ported the Libby code, though a Basic search for Bible only will keep some MVPs busy unconfusing the users.

I imagine it uses a very specific database designed for this feature, which would consume a lot of space on our local file system.

When we consider that a Concordance can be up to 0.5 Gb for a single bible version, and that fuzzy logic has to search for words that could occur in any bible translation, the question isn't whether it can be implemented locally, but whether it can efficiently be run locally without consuming lots more disk space.

I choose to believe that it just runs a Google search and pulls the Scripture references on the first page. :)

This is currently available on the beta update channel. Sorry, Jack and everyone, I should have posted in the beta forum. I'll move it now.

Tried a few purposely mangled searches so far - this is very sweet! Thank you Faithlife!

Brilliant. And, sadly, would probably give the best results.

Huh? Noticed Google search has Philippians 4:13 on first page of search results, which is not in Fuzzy Bible Search results. First page of Google has 1 Peter 5:7 while Fuzzy Bible Search has 1 Peter 5:6-8

Logos 7.2 Beta 3 added "Fuzzy Bible Search" to Everything (Basic) Search.

Is there any chance this will come to the web app?

This looks great!  I would LOVE to have it!

Fuzzy Search sends your search to an online database. (Internet connection is required.)

Is this temporary or permanent?

If temporary, Hallelujah!

If permanent, maybe I will use it someday, a little.  Probably I will shrug and just go back to Google.  Online use of Logos features is unreliable where I live, which might not be true for other people.

If Permanent, is it worth starting over with a new User Voice to get local Fuzzy Logic Searching?  Or would that take many years, or just never happen?

Also....

Will it only be available by doing an Everything Search?  [Crickets...]

This is permanent for the forseeable future. Apply standard qualifiers about our flawed ability to predict the future.

There are plans to integrate this into other parts of the application, but I don't have any details as to when or if this when be completed.

MJ really wanted FL ... I wonder if she likes this.

I wanted it for two reasons:

  1. The number of complaints that it wasn't present - check this one off
  2. To search the church fathers who are frequently loosely quoted - still waiting

No, the algorithm is quite different. I've been unsuccessful in my bid for a comparison of the results.
