How to do a word search on fasting
Hi,
I'm sure the answer is already out there somewhere but I just wanted to ask a question re: a word search through the bible. I am interested in finding out all of the passages that contain reference to fasting. The problem is that the root is "fast" which now scoops in all other references to "fast" which means running fast. How, therefore, would I run a search on fasting that only gives me the results that have the underlying meaning of "to fast" rather than fast as an adjective to movement?

If you right-click on a word that does have the appropriate meaning, you can select the "sense" of the word and run a search on that instead: https://ref.ly/logos4/Search;kind=Bible;q=$3CSense_$3D_to_fast$3E;match=stem

Type fast and you will find suggestions for topic, noun, verb, etc. Select the verb i.e. <Sense to fast> and search.

One search idea is sense:
<Sense fast> OR <Sense = fast (religious)> OR <Sense = to fast>
Another search idea is cultural concepts:
{Section <Culture Atonement>} INTERSECT deny
{Section <Culture Fasting>} INTERSECT (fast,"without food")
Searches can be combined:
<Sense fast> OR <Sense = fast (religious)> OR <Sense = to fast> OR ({Section <Culture Atonement>} INTERSECT deny) OR ({Section <Culture Fasting>} INTERSECT (fast,"without food"))

Dennis,
In addition to the above suggestions, you can open the Factbook and type fast. You should get lots of topical information in addition to a listing of where the sense fast is used.

Also try turning off the "Match all word forms" option in the panel menu for the search panel.

Also try turning off the "Match all word forms" option in the panel menu for the search panel.
Turning off "Match all word forms" for fasting search keeps "to fast" from being found so can search for:
"a fast" OR "to fast" OR "will fast" OR "without food" OR fasted OR fasting OR ((afflict, deny) WITHIN 11 WORDS (assembly, atonement, autumn, convocation,Sabbath,"that day"))
that finds a few more verses to consider.
