Here's the way we're thinking about access vs. ownership:

Thanks, Phil. That clarifies it.

Appreciated.

Mark Smith:

Thank you, Phil, for the clarifications, and Faithlife for the good idea.

You're welcome, Mark. We're excited about the potential of introducing millions of people to deeper Bible study who either couldn't otherwise afford it or wouldn't be able to justify the expense without first trying it.

Mark Smith:

One other question: has consideration been given to having a Logos 7 Basic Forum?

I know we have a lot of forums, but new users might find it helpful to browse in a Forum addressing only their limited set of resources and capabilities. (Then, again, they'd see some other things Logos could do by coming to the Logos 7 Forum.) Just a thought.

Yes. We discussed this on Friday. We'll definitely have a Faithlife group, but we may have a forum as well for those who make their way there and need beginner-level help. Thanks for suggesting it.

I am very thankful for the free Logos 7 basic. I do have one question: My reverse interlinear Bibles now show Person tagging, when right-clicking on a name and I can jump from there to Factbook. But a bible search for a person (for example <Person Joshua (son of Nun)>) will not show any results. Is that expected behavior? In Factbook I can basically see that information in the Lemmas section, but there it is of course sorted by the different lemmas used.

(I don't own any previous base package. I have already rebuild my index.)

I also get no results in Logos 7 Basic when I run your search. It is unexpected, since Logos forms the search from the right click menu, but produces no results.

I doubt this is meant to happen.

You will not get results in your Bibles because L7 Basic does not include the Biblical Referents database which makes those <Person> searches possible**. The Biblical People dataset in L7 Basic provides (I think) some data for Factbook  and allows the recognition of proper names for <Person> in the Context menu of bibles. This includes instances where, for example, "Jerusalem" means "people of Jerusalem", otherwise Places and Things are not recognised because their datasets are not included. The Referents database also allows recognition (and searches) for pronouns, verbs and even adjectives where they refer to a Person, Place or Thing.

** you will get results in non-bible resources where there is a media tag for <Person>. Referents works in original language bibles and reverse interlinear bibles that have morphology.

NB I have recommended that FL include the Referents database in Basic (which probably means they also have to include Biblical Places and Biblical Things datasets).

Is the new sermon writing guide/tool included in the free logos 7 basic download?

Thanks for the under-the-hood explanation, Dave.

If FL wants people to get a real feel for the software, they should add the referents dataset. I think places and things would be extra helpful to add as well. That would mean expanding Factbook, too, which would be a good thing.

As it is, there will be inevitable questions (like the one just asked) about why a search that the software offers doesn't work. That will produce frustration and disappointment.

You get one chance to make a good first impression. I hope FL will reconsider your suggestion.

The Sermon Starter Guide is. The Sermon Document (the authoring tool) is not.

What happens when a Logos Now user having a Logos 6 base package gets logos 7 Basic?

I assume nothing changes. Except for owning the Logos 7 Basic engine added to his base package. Right?

Your engine changes to Logos 7. You may get a resource or two you don't already have (access-only, not ownership).

As a LN user I thought I am already using the Logos 7 engine, although not owning it:

Therefore I assume nothing changes. Or do I misunderstand something?

Yes, in this case you already have the current engine. However, as I said, you may get a few resources. Check the list for "New to You" here.

EDIT: The resources I would get are of no interest to me so I have not 'purchased' Basic. Like you, I have Logos Now and have been using L7 for some time.

Thanks, Dave and Mark. Makes sense, and yes, it might be better to either make the search possible or take it out of the right-click menu.

Phil Gons (Faithlife):

Correct. We don't revoke your permanent licenses.

Logos 7 Basic is aimed at the new user, but will also serve as the free update to Logos 7 for the existing base package owner.

Thanks Phil for clarifying. I thought otherwise when I first came across the offer.

This is a great offering. I have already recommended it to a friend, and I expect to recommend it to many more people.

What specific resources are accessible with this package? Bible Translations, Greek/Hebrew Lexicons, Commentaries, etc.

Andrew116:

this is a great thing!

may I make a suggestion? Would it not be good to include SBL Greek, since it is free anyway and it will give the prospective new user the ability to play around with original language stuff?

I believe it's included. It should be listed in the Library under "The Greek New Testament: SBL Edition".
