It's great to see Passage Lists implemented, the merge options are brilliant.

My suggestions for improvement:

1) make these available as a visual filter, ie so all passages on a  passage list are highlighted.

2) Add -> Passages from selected text doesn't seem to do anything...

+1 Yes Great idea! I'd love to use this for my "Memory Verses" Passage List. It would be good to be able to see them in context.

Hmm... I get the same result.

Also, Add -> Passages from another passage list seems to be a vestige of Logos 3. It is redundant now that there's the new Merge menu, as it does the same thing as Merge Union. It's kind of odd to have two commands so close to each other in the UI which do the same thing but have different names. Could cause confusion

First, I must say, I am still trying to get a handle on Passage list, what it is for (no "help" file, I see).  I understand it as "verse list" in L3 which I used a little bit (and needed/wanted to use it more).

Jon, I expect "add passages from . . . selected text" to add a passage from a portion of the bible that I have selected/highlighted.  But then I noticed when one clicks on "another passage list" or "from file" that different dialogue boxes appear.  I wondered if ". . . selected text" is to "open" the little search windows that are already open:

that really doesn't seem intuitive, but the fact that no verses "insert" from my selected text in my open Bible, and the fact that selecting other "Add" options open other boxes (to select file, etc), made me wonder if I understood "add --> selected text".

Besides that "nothing" really does happen:  the drop down menu stays "dropped down" when I try to click on "selected text."  Not so, however, when I click on the other two drop down "Add" options.

Still LOTS to figure out on Passage List, how to use it.

I used it to keep a list of "memory verses" that I was working on or had memorized and might want to review periodically.

It's also potentially really useful to generate a list of references (and optionally the corresponding verse text too) from Search results. We've been wanting a way to be able to copy and paste Search results into Word, for example. Or print them. But now you can use this nifty feature (which was called "Export Results to Verse List" in L3) to do that:

Ah! I discovered how it works. Try selecting a passage from a non-Bible book that mentions Scripture references within it. It works for that. I thought the same as you at first, and I was beginning to respond to you that the feature must not be completely implemented yet. But in retrospect, I realize it would be pretty pointless to select a range of consecutive verses in the Bible and copy them all to the Passage list. Much more useful to select an article from a journal for example, create a Passage List from all the Scripture references in it, type in your favorite Bible version abbreviation in the Resources box to generate a window with all the Bible text for all the references in the article. Then you can keep it up side by side next to the article while you're reading the article and easily look up the references without having to hover your mouse over or click on each one and jump to it. Nifty! Smile

EDIT: Here's my article with selection and Passage List just after I clicked Add --> Add passages from...selected text (click to zoom and see it large):

I did, and you are correct!

not necessarily.  I might be reading, and think "here is a great pericope/verse for my list" .  It would be nice to either

a) right click and "add to passage list _______" like we can for clippings and notes, or,

b) click the drop down menu and "add selected Bible text . . . "

Currently, I HAVE to go to the passage list and manually type in the reference.  To me, that takes more time.  I have to navigate to that window (with my mouse) and once I am there, take my hand OFF the mouse and type in (and needing to look back and make sure I got the reference correct).  I mean, that is not a HUGE deal, but option a) seems in line with what we can do for notes and clippings, and would be easy enough to add (says I, the non-programmer, lol), and option b) keeps the flow a bit smoother and avoids potentially messing up the reference.

there is some merit to this, but only in a secondary way: if you already have passage list open.  But we already have this capability and it actually works better (it follows our reading): power lookup.

thanks for you investigative work and discoveries!

Rosie and Dan - I went through the same discovery process as you.

I agree with Dan's suggestion to make it work with selected Bible text also.

Yes, I can now see the use for having it work with selected Bible text. If selected Bible text then selected text in Notes and Clippings, too. (John 13:9)

Ah! I discovered how it works.

Excellent, makes sense now; I just was not on the right wave length. I note as well that if you do select some bible text, you can just choose 'Reference' from the drop down -> Add to Passage List X... So that's easier than an option in the Passage List window itself to do the same thing...

Ah, I see.  But not very intuitive for me.  Drag-and-drop was the first thing I tried - see my other post here: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/13725/106057.aspx#106057

For others reading this, that choose 'Reference' which Jon is talking about would be on the menu that pops up if you right-click on the selected text, and it only works in Bibles.

Incidentally, I couldn't find it at first, but "Add to Passage List X" is on the left panel of the menu not down on the lower right where you'd expect it to be along with Add a note to X and Add a clipping to X. I suggest that be tweaked.

Rosie, how did you get the verses to actually display the text beside the reference?  All I get is a reference list.

never mind, read another post that said to add a bible in the reference box on the top.

Awesome!

Rosie-

Is this a beta version or coming on a future update?  I don't have the "save passage as a list" option on my searches.  There is no help on the wiki for passage lists or else I wouldn't bother you.  Thanks.

Anthony

It's in the current 4.0c beta, which will become a future update for regular users, eventually.

It is on the current beta which means it will probably be in the next release.
