To immediately update to the current beta enter the Update Now command. Otherwise, the app will automatically update the next time it's scheduled to check for updates.

Why have the Logos 7 updates been so lackluster? I feel like almost every Logos 6 update included new features and/or Logos Now features.

Thanks for the feedback, John. There are three main reasons for this:

  1. The Logos Web App. We've redirected a lot of our development resources to the Logos web app, where we've been making some really good progress recently. This work doesn't immediately impact the desktop app, but it does represent value for those who want web-based access. I'd encourage you to check it out, if you haven't played with it in a while.
  2. Improvements to the Core App Experience. The remaining team is focused on addressing some of the bigger issues that we've heard about from users. They're currently pointed at performance—startup and shutdown time in particular for now. But to get to that work, they need to add the ability to record actual performance from users so we can pinpoint problems and know what to address. The groundwork is done, and we're getting ready to move on to problem solving. So we hope to be able to improve the app's performance over the next few releases. But these won't show up as "new features."
  3. Multi-Release Projects. There are a few others items in the works that will either take multiple releases to build or are larger-scale initiatives that probably won't be ready until Logos 8. You should see the beginnings of a pretty cool new feature in 7.7. We're also doing a lot of the architectural work for a brand new notes platform. This will be a multi-release project, and we're not sure yet when we'll start shipping the first iterations of it.

I'm sorry we've not been able to provide more quick wins. But we are working on a lot that we're really excited about and think will bring a lot of value to users both in the desktop and web apps.

  • Application no longer rebuilds the library catalog index on every startup for users who have any temporary licenses.

No need to apologize! I really appreciate the response. It makes complete sense and was exactly what I was looking to hear. Thanks for all you and the team do, Phil.

Phil,

Thank you for these details. One thing you didn't mention in your comments but which got attention after the release of L7 and which Bradley seemed to agree with was revisiting the right-click menu behavior.

It's become a very slow mish-mash of functionality that is hard to navigate and requires too much interaction to do common workflows (e.g. having to scroll to get to below-the-fold options.

Any work being done on that front?

Thanks again,

Donnie

This is great news for the platform but not so great news for those who have already paid, in advance, for features without having to wait for Logos 8.

Maybe I am wrong, but the value of LN is in the advance features for the desktop app. The discounts are okay, the preview resources are lackluster, the mobile ed never seems to change, and the web app only appeals to me on the very rare occasion that I am out and do not have my laptop or mobile device with me.

Michael, I mostly feel as you do. For me it is the new features that make LN compelling.

I think I expected that what we saw in Logos 6 would be repeated in Logos 7: new features every six weeks. That has not happened. However, we were not promised that, and it is probably unrealistic to think FL can keep coming up with great ideas to implement every six weeks.

So I need to manage my expectations. So far, a few nice new features, and some other improvements. The web app isn't of much interest to me, but FL committed to it, and it probably is a good thing to have. I am sure we'll see a few more useful tools before L8 launches.

Phil, I appreciate you answering the question a number of users have been asking or thinking.

The subscription includes future "Logos 8" features but it also gives users all the features of  Logos 6 and Logos 7 which they don't own.

Good points Mark and Dave. I was not trying to be sassy, just stating where my value in LN is placed. My wife often reminds me that it makes all the difference when your expectations fit the situation.

I also signed up for Logos Now with the assumption that I get new features every 6 weeks. For instance, the Logos Blog states:

"In every release of Logos Now (roughly every 6 weeks) you’ll get access to more and more content, services, tools, and features,"

While this was possible with Logos 6 when they had a pipeline of new features waiting to get released, this was getting more and more difficult. The timeline available at https://www.logos.com/now-timeline shows that the speed of feature releases is slowing down. But as Mark said, it is unrealistic that FL can come up with brand new ideas and implement them every 6 weeks.

I also agree that Logos Desktop and the mobile apps need some major improvements in speed, reliability and usability. Right now this is more important to me than new features.

In the end, FL needs a more constant and predictable stream of revenue. Logos Now helps them to achieve this. More and more software companies are moving towards a subscription model. Although I wished FL released more features, I still got value out of my Logos Now subscription due to the discounts that I get when purchasing more base packages.

This is such good news to me that it almost give me the jitters! Smile In my experience, startup time is MASSIVELY affected by the "use internet" setting and consequent behavior. I'm really happy to hear the the groundwork is done and progress is being made!

Thanks for all you guys do, Phil!

I am extremely glad about this.  Speed is the only major qualification I make when recommending Logos to others.  Slow startup and hanging when opening a resource (Bible with single parallel resource in tab) in a blank layout are frequent frustrations when using the software I love.  Thank you, Phil, for listening to what many users have asked for.

You should see the beginnings of a pretty cool new feature in 7.7.

Phil, I haven't seen anything yet. At this point, unless your team has features under wraps or Logos Now is no longer the avenue for early access to new features, the release of Logos 8 looks rather bleak.

We're still working on the feature we thought might be released with 7.7. 7.9 is the current target.

Several of the features we're planning will be larger undertakings that don't lend themselves to early release.

You'll continue to see performance and other improvements in the dot releases, along with the occasional new guide section, dataset, etc.

Thanks Phil. I appreciate the update. (for the record, I haven't seen anything bleak from Logos in a long time. I'm not worried. I know the team is stronger now than ever.)
