Web App and the Updates to Logos Now Email

I'm going to get in there early and say that the email announcement stating that the Logos Web app is being transitioned to Logos 7 base packages is a good thing. In fact, I think it is a great move. Once it goes live to all users I think it will hopefully go from strength to strength.
Personally, I like the idea of Faithlife using Logos Now to trial new products and features for a period time, take feedback, and then release more widely to the public.
Also, free books...

Absolutely, and everyone benefits, as improvements from the web app make their way to the desktop.LMAM said:Once it goes live to all users I think it will hopefully go from strength to strength.
For $89 (last year's price), I'd imagine it's paid for itself 4 times over. Best FL purchase I made, apart from the program itself.LMAM said:Also, free books...
Thanks to FL for including Carta and a Hebrew audio bible in Logos 9!

I haven't seen any email announcement. If you are saying they are rolling out the web app to all Logos 7 base package users I personally think that it a bad decision. The web app is still very much in beta. A lot of functionality is missing, document can be accessed but none other than sermon documents can be edited. Notes and highlighting are store in a completely different platform so those created on web app can not be accesed on desktop and those created on desktop will not be accessible on web app. This is going to interrupt uses work flows, and has the potential to create more support calls - my notes / highlights are missing from the desktop, not syncing with web app etc. But this is typical of FL to throw half baked projects on users prematurely. And then there is the server crashes - do we really feel confident they won't happen - and when they do, notes and highlights created on the web app will be completely inaccessible to the user. If you are a student or a academic working on a paper or a pastor or leader preparing a sermon or study then rely on the web app at your own risk.

The email doesn't specify if "own a base package" means "library" or "feature set". Also, would Basic be included, even though it isn't really "owned"?

I think it is good for all to have access to the app. In this day and age, it is normal to have access to cloud based counterpart of commercial, locally installed products (e.g., Office, Evernote, etc.).
I just hope that it does not signal a will to move it all to the Internet. I know that server-based solutions have been (increasingly?) proposed. Android users know how frustrating it is to have features that only work online. A couple days ago, my Internet went down for a whole day. It would have been a very difficult day indeed if I had been totally immobilised in my work if Logos could only work online. (I was in fact, frustrated at some point with the inability to do something I wanted to with the Atlas, for that very reason -- some functionality requires to be online).
Otherwise I look forward to the quick access that the app can provide. Sometimes I also find it a more pleasant reading environment.

We have been told that there will always be an off internet platform and it would be a huge betrayal if that ever changed. I am all for an internet platform and glad it is being developed more. But as has been mentioned, things bring the internet down, stopping work flow.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.
The Logos (and Verbum) desktop software isn't going anywhere. In fact, as you may have noticed in release notes, we are actively improving it in performance and functionality, and we have plans for some exciting new features.
I'll respond to other questions about the web app shortly, but I just want to stop this one in it's tracks. [:)]

"Base package" usually means "Library+Feature Set;" but in this case, we are giving access to the web app to anyone who owns either a Logos 7 library, or feature set, or both.
This does not include Basic at this time, but we expect to open it up to Basic users at some point in the future.

Yes and no. Doc, I don't know if you have used the web app in the last few weeks, but it has developed dramatically, and it's getting better all the time. Check out the list of improvements from the latest 2-week sprint.
Of course, you are correct to say it is "missing functionality" when compared to the desktop app. But as far as I am aware, it is the most advanced in-browser Bible study solution anywhere.
Disciple of Christ (doc) said:Notes and highlighting are store in a completely different platform
Again, yes and no. This is true for now, but web notes are the precursor to a new, improved note system that will sync with desktop and mobile apps. We hope to deliver that later this year.

I am sorry Adam but there it can not be a yes and no answer at the same time as to whether something is in beta, and it can't be as I have seen from FL employees on these forums that the web app is on par with the desktop app when they were doing a sales pitch for Logos Now months ago and then when users complain they can't do xyz on the web app customer service will say the web app is in beta.
I usw it yesterday Adam and could not do something as simple as creating a passage list or even add a few verses to an existing passage list. If you have read the forums for the web app you will see others have raised concerns about basic things that can't be done.
Adam I have seen the recent updates, they are a step toward but no matter how much you want to take a post modernist approach and sell the truth as being relative the web app is in beta.

Adam once again a sales pitch that is trying to make truth relative and ignore the absolutes. If a user uses the web platform for notes and highlighting their workflow will be split across two separate platforms and if FL suffers a server outage, or a user suffers a power or internet outage they will loose all access to those notes and highlights. Later in the year won't help a student trying to complete a paper when they loose access to their research because they have relied on the web platform.
Adam please don't give me the sales pitch and sweep over the serious issues I have raised by ensuring you communicate these risks to all customers who use the web app for notes and highlighting between now and that utopia of 'later this year'. After all that is what a responsible company would do and communicate the risks to its users.
And still no email.....

I just happened to read this thread this morning before opening the web app. Could not help but noticing that before logging into the app, the web page clearly says "beta," so that is the official status Faithlife is communicating to the public. I agree with Doc that when Faithlife makes this available to a much wider audience, they need to clearly communicate the beta status and its implications/risks. This is a chance for the marketing team to really shine and "get it right." It will also prevent Faithlife from having to field countless calls and emails from angry/confused customers.
That said, I am a newly minted Logos Now member who joined less than two weeks ago. I am very thankful for the effort Faithlife has put into the web app, as it has allowed me to study the Bible on my old C720 Chromebook in a way I never could have before. Keep up the good work!

Do I get this correctly: Next month Logos 7 features are not a part of Logos now membership anymore?

No, you are mistaken. Logos Now will continue to include Logos 7 features as well as additional features not in Logos 7. Starting on July 1, the Logos Web App, which was available exclusively to Logos Now members, will be available to others who own Logos 7.Jack Nørdam said:Do I get this correctly: Next month Logos 7 features are not a part of Logos now membership anymore?

To add onto what Timothy said, not only are Logos Now members not losing anything, they are actually gaining something. All the features and perks that come with Logos Now will still be there. There are essentially two changes that will take place beginning July 1. First, non-Logos Now members who own a Logos 7 base package will also be granted access to the web app (this does not take anything away from those who already have Logos Now). Second, Logos Now members will be offered a choice of several books each month that they can permanently keep free of charge. No word yet from Faithlife on what kinds of books will be offered, how many there will be to choose from, etc. Hope this helps, and thank you Faithlife for your generosity and continued hard work on the web app!

I had assumed the plan was to correct any major bugs and add the missing features before a general public release. Releasing the web app without sorting out the note sync issues would be a major concern for me.
Is there any chance of a short term workaround for notes? For example, web notes could be sent to a desktop document called 'web notes'. Similarly, desktop notes could be view in a reread-only format online? I'm no expert in these areas, but perhaps it could be a good stop gap?
EDIT: Upon reflection, I have decided to soften the original language

LMAM, I appreciate your original enthusiasm for the direction we are going.
I'd love to hear more about what you are referring to as major bugs. That feedback can go a long way to help us prioritize work.
We are executing on plans to make significant improvements to notes on the web app first and eventually bring those features to desktop and mobile. At that point all platforms will seamlessly sync. We understand that in the short-term this has the adverse effect of isolating web notes to the web app but solving that problem is prohibitively expensive and doesn't contribute to our larger goals. We are doing our best to maximize our limited time/resources to deliver the most value for our users. If we identify a good way to bridge the two systems, we will surely look into that.
Even with that as the stated plan, your feedback is always appreciated. We rely on user feedback to continually adjust our priorities and reevaluate said plans.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for your reply. The singular problem with internet forums is that they do not possess a mandatory review before posting system, nor an 'are you really sure you want to post this?' warning. On reflection, I have edited my post to soften the language that I used previously... James 1:19-20 is a very prescient motivation. My apologies.
I think my concern is that receiving the email saying that the web app was heading to the general market sounded as if it was entering a new phase of its life within the Logos ecosystem. Hence my initial enthusiasm (which hasn't gone anywhere I might add). To then discover that it would not ship with a joined up notes system was partly confusingly, and, honestly, partly a bit annoying. I can't help but feel that both of those feelings, and maybe the reactions of others (perhaps) could have been avoided if the initial email also included the details about the upcoming changes to the notes system. Some no doubt would have still gone for the kill shot, but others, myself included, would have afforded you (as in the Logos team) some grace and patience. I don't think that Faithlife has been dishonest in this decision, but a bit of public awareness about what the future held for the web app might have been helpful. I don't know.
More generally, why keep us in the dark about these things? Why not tell us that the team is working on the notes system, take some feedback to what we, the end user, are looking for and what we might want it to look like? I get that where there are three users there is probably four opinions and that you can't give everyone what they want, but surely some common desires would come to the fore even if they were not all implementable.
At the end of the day, I am a Logos fanboy through and through. It is an incredible tool for my church ministry as an elder, preacher and families worker, but more than that it has been a means of God's grace in my devotional and private study. heck, one of the reasons I'm not going anywhere as a user is that simply can't afford to! Nevertheless, no one likes being kept in the dark, and Christians are notoriously bad at dealing with change, especially when that change is not in the way they expected and/or comes as a surprise. No doubt that is only compounded when there is a financial buy-in involved.
So I guess the TLDRconclusion is this: please don't keep us in the dark, or allow us to 'go home' with that perception of the company - I/we are on your team.
Carpe verbum.

It's encouraging to know how valuable our software is to you and your various ministries! It never gets old to hear stories like that.
Please understand that it is not our intention to keep anyone in the dark, we strive to operate as openly and transparently as possible. In fact, the forums are vast and it's easy for someone like to me to talk about web notes in one thread and have it go unnoticed in another. For instance, I mentioned some of these things here and Phil discussed it here as well as alluding to it here and in other threads.
We cherish user feedback! That is why we conduct surveys, value conversations with users like this, take feedback via customer service calls, and perform usability tests. We even included feedback mechanisms right within the web app itself (and the team reads every message we receive)!
It is also why we plan to roll out the notes changes incrementally on the web app--we want to improve it along the way with your help before delivering it to everyone. We understand how fundamental notes are to a majority of our users and we want the planned improvements to serve you well.
So, this is an open invitation to reach out with your thoughts/ideas/questions anytime along the way.

I have raised concerns a number of times about notes being isolated on the web platform in different threads. A number of FL employees are aware that I have raised these issues. As FL don't want to keep users in the dark, now is the time to make that communication. Relying on forum threads is not adequate enough level of communication.
I have no issues with the development approach as I have said elsewhere and I think the team working on the web app has being doing a great job. Furthermore i don't believe it is the responsibility of the web development team to communicate these risks to all potential users of the web app. The web app team is interacting with users very well. The web app team should be communicating the risks to the appropriate internal stakeholders who are respnsible for communicating with all customers.
I raise these concerns because I don't want to see any fellow user being caught out by having research they have done for a paper or otherwise being isolated on the web and access to the web servers are down for whatever reason is down and their deadline is looming and FL failed to make users aware of the risk.
I raise these issues because I don't want FL support staff to have to deal with upset customers in this scenario and FL failed to make the users aware of the risk.
I don't want FL to change their plans.
I simply want FL to make open, honest and clear communication to all potential users of the web app that the risk exists till this next phase of notes and highlighting development is complete and annotations are all back on the one platform.
I don't believe I am asking anything unreasonable. Asking a company to make users aware of the risks of using their product before they use the product i would think is a fairly reasonable expectation.
I believe customers using the web app for notes and highlights should be informed of the risk so they can make an informed decision as to how they use the web app for these functions.
i only have the best interests of both FL and its customers at heart. Apologies to anyone who reads my passion and concern as anything else. That has always and always will be my intent on anything I have ever said and will ever say on these forums.

Petah I agree with you and am not suggesting they should change what the are doing. I simply believe at this point they have not made it clear to users of the web app their annotations data will be isolated and that if that data is required for academic or vocational needs then they are at risk of being cut off from that data when they might require access to it.
Clear open communication with customers should be a priority when a business asks its users to participate in a beta program. FL have an opportunity to do the right thing by their customers before Juky 1.

Thanks. I did that and almost everything was selected. There were a couple that were not (the only one I can remember right now is soundfaith) that I did go ahead and select, so now they are all selected with the exception of Verbum. Oddly enough, however, LN was not one of the options.

I don't think there is a LN mailing list. Rather, someone runs a report and builds an email population based on that attribute. Have you checked your junk mail folder(s)? Without seeing the population and how the report was run, I don't know why you were missed.

Quick update: Starting tomorrow, there will be more than 3,100 titles available on the website from which Logos Now members can choose one a month for free.
We're currently working on creating a faceted search page to list all of these books for easy access. It looks like we might not be able to ship that facet today (if not, it will be ready on Monday). This doesn't mean the books won't be free, it just means they'll be harder to find
The short-term solution is to use this link to sort products by lowest price. This will show the free books first. Depending on how many free books you've picked up in the past, there be some books on here that are normally free.
There is no need to enter a coupon code as the free-book discount is linked to your account by virtue of having a Logos Now membership.
Thanks!

Thanks!
Thank you Ben, if it all goes to plan I think this is a good approach. Hopefully there will be some of those 3,100 titles those with extreme library's don't already own all 3,100 and are able to find a title of interest each month. I don't have an extreme size library so looking forward to picking up a new book later this week when its up and running.

The heart of the email:
- The web app will no longer be a LN exclusive, starting July 1
- LN users will gain access to FL TV until end of July
- LN users will gain ability to choose a free book (from a list) each month to keep.
- If you have questions, call customer service
When will the details about the new revamped LN hit the main page? I'd be very interested in coming back to LN if it comes with a free book each month. I subscribe to FLTV as well. It would be a great bonus if that was just given to LN members as well
Bump!
They should be up on the page by July 1.

Ben sir
I used to be a member but I let it lapse. Will there be a way for me to see what books will be free if I were to join again or would I have to join first?
