Hello All,

I am looking to purchase a very basic laptop as I start seminary. I will be using this strictly for Logos and doing assignments/writing papers. Given my budget I am going with 128gb SSD and 8gb RAM, but I am having a difficult time settling on a processor. Was hoping you all might be able to give me some input.

The cheapest processor I am looking at is AMD A10 9600P. For $60 more I can go with AMD A12 9720P or Intel I5 7200U. For an additional $90 ($150 more than A10) I can go with Intel I7 7500U. Also I should note that with AMD processor the RAM is DDR4 at 1866MHz, while with Intel processor the substitute to DDR4 that runs at 2133MHz. Not sure how much real world difference that will make?

I want Logos to run smoothly so I don't want to skimp out on the processor, but at the same point in time I am trying to be budget conscious. Any insight our thoughts you could give me on the cost/performance of the above processors would be appreciated. Thank you all in advance

If it were me, I would go with the A10 and spend a little more for a larger SSD. Depending on library size, you may find 128gb will not be enough.

I would get a larger SSD too, 16 GB of RAM if possible

Thanks for the input. I guess I should also add that I already have a desktop with 500gb HD and 128SSD and a 1 TB external HD. The laptop is my secondary device so I can work outside the home or in the basement away from family when needed. I will have the Logos Gold 7 package.

Given this information would you still recommend going to larger SSD? Is the A10 sufficient or would you recommend a different processor? Would I be better served to increase RAM? Given budget I could likely only upgrade one of the three. Thanks again.

Logos 7 requires the same books to be installed in all setups. And so your laptop will have the same books as your desktop. Depending on the size of your library, this could eat up a lot of SSD space between the books themselves and the index. Having a larger SSD will give you more growing room as your library expands - while also letting you use your laptop for other things.

Welcome Big Smile

CPU Benchmark => https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php shows

  • 3838 for AMD A10 9600P
  • 4098 for AMD A12 9720P => 6.78 % faster that may not be noticeable humanly
  • 4718 for Intel i5-7200U => 22.9 % faster should be noticeable humanly
  • 5235 for Intel i7-7500U => 36.4 % faster should be noticeable humanly

Personally would compare overall laptop price since like better price per performance. Also would look at gaming laptops.

Acer Aspire 5 with Intel i5-7200U, 8GB RAM, and 256GB SSD is $ 639.99 => https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834316154

If have reliable networking, then a less expensive laptop (or chromebook) has option of remote controlling desktop plus could use Logos Web App

The memory speed difference is not significant and 8 GB is fine. But a 128 GB drive is limiting even with Logos as the main/only app. Go for 256 GB to avoid running out of space and to maintain its inherent speed. The Intel 7200 is the better choice of processor.
