4.0c Beta 3: Search with OR parenthesized overrides and makes NEAR useless

If I do a Basic search for (faith NEAR <john>) OR (belief NEAR <john>) in my Topical Bible Indexes collection, it finds all occurrences of either the word faith or belief when they appear near a reference to the book of John. That's as I would have expected. All well and good.
However, if I search for (faith OR belief) NEAR <john> in the same collection, it does something unexpected and I'm not sure I can even figure out what it's doing. First, it treats NEAR like a search term, because that word is sometimes highlighted in the results. Second the results are way more restricted than with the above search (109 results in 7 articles in 3 resources as opposed to 261 results in 81 articles in 5 resources).

This has been reported before. It is incredibly frustrating. You need to search for (faith, belief) NEAR <john>
This is my personal Faithlife account. On 1 March 2022, I started working for Faithlife, and have a new 'official' user account. Posts on this account shouldn't be taken as official Faithlife views!

What is the meaning of <john> in the sample query (faith, belief) NEAR <john>. In other words what does <...> mean. I cannot find it documented anywhere.

<john> is a search for the bible reference "John". Other references are accommodate by <...> - see Search HELP.
